Tan Du (Phlegm-Toxin) is a condition caused by heat accumulation in the Lung Zang (Lung Organ), combined with excessive intake of water and fluids. This leads to fluid retention accumulating in the chest and diaphragm region. The cold and hot qi within the body contend with each other, forming solidified masses that are difficult to dissipate. Consequently, symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, epigastric and abdominal fullness and stuffiness, frequent nausea, and loss of appetite occur. All these manifestations are due to the obstruction and stagnation of Tan Du (Phlegm-Toxin).
For treating long-standing Tan Du (Phlegm-Toxin) accumulated in the Lung Zang (Lung Organ), lingering in the chest and diaphragm without dispersing, resulting in poor appetite, Banxia San (Pinellia Powder) is suitable.
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang, washed seven times with hot water to remove slipperiness); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 0.5 liang); Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, removed radix tip); Binglang (Arecae Semen, 3 fen); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 0.5 liang, removed radix tip); Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos, 0.5 liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, stir-fried until slightly red and sliced).
Preparation and Administration: Pound and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, Fresh Ginger), decoct until 0.6 portion remains. Strain the dregs. Take warm at any time. Avoid roasted, fried, hot wheat noodles, and pork or dog meat.
For treating Lung Zang (Lung Organ) Tan Du (Phlegm-Toxin) causing stagnation in the chest and diaphragm, Ganjuhua San (Chrysanthemi Flos Powder) is suitable.
Ingredients: Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, Chrysanthemum Flower); Renshen (Ginseng Radix, removed radix tip); Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium, sliced); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed seven times with hot water to remove slipperiness); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma); Weilingxian (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma? *Note: In Song dynasty texts, Weilingxian usually refers to Saposhnikoviae Radix, but modern WHO standard often maps to Salvia or distinct entry. Given context of phlegm/stagnation, Saposhnikoviae Radix is likely intended historically, but strictly following common herb lists, we use Saposhnikoviae Radix if available, otherwise generic. However, standard TCM herb for Weilingxian is Saposhnikoviae Radix.* Correction: Weilingxian is Saposhnikoviae Radix); Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, sliced); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried).
