This disease originates from the Stomach Meridian. It may be caused by drinking cold water due to Stomach Cold, injury from Summer-heat Toxicity, or dampness invasion. This leads to an imbalance of cold and heat, conflict between Water and Fire, and disorder of Yin and Yang, resulting in muscle cramps and spasms, chaotic meridian circulation, and sudden severe vomiting and diarrhea. These are governed by the Qi of the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). By observing the complexion and pulse, and analyzing the root and branch aspects of the meridians, this constitutes the method for treating Huoluan.
If there is headache and fever, the pathogen comes from Wind-Cold. If the Middle Jiao becomes hot, it is in the half-exterior half-interior stage. If the pathogen is slightly higher, residing in the Yang aspect, it manifests as Heat; if there is more Heat and thirst, use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to dissipate it. If the pathogen is slightly lower, residing in the Yin aspect, it manifests as Cold; if there is more Cold and no thirst, use Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) to warm it. If exterior symptoms persist after vomiting and diarrhea, resolve the exterior to induce sweating; if there is cold extremities (Jue), warm them.
If there is both vomiting and diarrhea, clear urination, profuse sweating, and internal and external heat, also treat with warming methods. If after vomiting and purging, sweating and cold extremities do not resolve, and the pulse is faint and about to disappear, treat with Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) and similar formulas.
If there is vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle cramps, with body heat and a long pulse, this is a primary disease of the Yangming Meridian. It is appropriate to harmonize the middle, using Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Pingwei San (Powder to Maintain Stability), or Jianzhong Tang (Decoction to Establish the Middle).
