Treats bone-steaming fever and chills (a syndrome characterized by yin deficiency with internal heat, manifesting as a sensation of heat steaming from the bones accompanied by alternating chills and fever). The *Record of Famous Physicians* states: The daughter of Yang Sicheng from Mozhou was betrothed to Zheng Digong. She suffered from bone-steaming and flesh-heat disease. Her symptoms would flare up with external cold; after the cold passed, internal heat would attach to the bones and steam. During periods of intense steaming heat, her limbs were slightly emaciated, and the dorsum of her feet was swollen. The pathology lay within the five zang and six fu organs, yet many physicians failed to cure her. Later, she encountered Dr. Wu from Chuzhou who said, "Allow me to treat you." He prescribed only Shigao San (Gypsum Powder) to be taken orally. Her body became slightly cool, but the condition remained unchanged.
(The formula is found in *Lingyuan Fang*).
True Gypsum (Shigao) (quantity not limited, must be ground extremely fine).
Mix the above with freshly drawn cold water and take one fangcun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a tablespoon) at a time. Stop when the body feels free of heat. (Consistent with records in *Waitai Miyao* and *Bencao*).
Treats limb fatigue and pain in men and women, and deficiency-labor with chills and fever. (From *Lingyuan Fang*)
Artemisiae Annuae Herba (Qinghao): Harvest when fruits mature in August or September. Remove stems and branches. Soak in urine of a healthy boy for three days. Dry and grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose.
With one Mume Fructus (Wumei), decoct until reduced to 70% volume. Take warm.
Treats bone-steaming labor (chronic consumptive disease with bone-steaming tidal fever), clears heat and releases the muscle layer, and promotes appetite. (From *Boji Fang*)
Testudo Carapax et Plastrum (Jiujie Biejia) (one piece), Bupleuri Radix (Beichaihu) (2 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Cortex Lycii (Digupi), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao) (each 1 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huhuanglian), Isatis Radix (Xuanlian) (each 1 fen), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guangui), Costus Root (Muxiang) (each 0.5 liang), Moschus (Shexiang) (1 zi), Butter and Honey (Su Mi) (each 3 liang).
Grind the above fourteen ingredients into a fine powder. Use 1 jin of Qinghao, 5 sheng of urine from a healthy boy, and 1 sheng of good wine. Decoct the Qinghao juice to approximately 2 sheng. Strain and discard the Qinghao residue. Add butter and honey, and continue boiling into a paste. After cooling, mix in the herb powder, knead well, and form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 15 pills per dose, washed down with warm wine; rice drink is also acceptable. Take three times daily. If preparing this formula after autumn, add seven stalks of Peach Twig and Willow Twig. This medicine is very effective.
