According to the *San Yin Fang* (Treatise on Three Causes), women suffering from diarrhea, whether described in the classics as Dongxie (profuse watery diarrhea), Sunxie (undigested food in stool), Tangxie (loose stools), Ruxie (soft and sticky stools), Weixie (stomach diarrhea), Pixie (spleen diarrhea), Dachangxie (large intestine diarrhea), Dajiaxie (severe intestinal obstruction with diarrhea), Xiaochangxie (small intestine diarrhea), or Shuigu Zhuxia (water and grain pouring down), are essentially the same condition. The origin of these diseases lies in the deficiency-cold of the intestines and stomach, allowing pathogenic factors to invade. The classics state: "When cold is extreme, diarrhea occurs." If wind is injured in spring, Sunxie will inevitably occur in summer (this is because wind injures the Liver; when Liver Qi is flourishing, it transfers its qi to overcome Spleen Earth). It also states: "Cold leads to loose stools, heat leads to foul discharge," which results from external pathogens. Joy, anger, worry, thought, and fear cause the isolation of Zang-Fu Qi and the dissipation of Spirit, inevitably leading to Tangxie; this belongs to internal injury. Diarrhea caused by consuming raw and cold foods that injure the Spleen and Stomach belongs to neither-internal-nor-external causes. For cold patterns, apply warming methods; for heat patterns, apply cooling methods; for sliding/incontinence patterns, apply astringent methods; for dampness patterns, apply drying methods. There is no treatment principle for dysentery and diarrhea that surpasses these.
This formula treats deficiency-cold of the intestines and stomach, diarrhea, and unceasing pouring down of water and grain. It addresses Spleen deficiency with Qi blockage and inability to take in food.
Da Nongpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, five liang) Beihuixiang (Foeniculum Vulgare Fruit), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each three liang); Hezi (Terminalia Chebula Fruit), Chishizhi (Halloysitum Rubrum) (each one-and-a-half liang).
Grind all into fine powder, make pills using wheat paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take fifty pills on an empty stomach with rice drink. If taken regularly, it warms the Spleen and Stomach.
This formula treats deficiency of the Zang-Fu organs, where Wind, Dampness, and Cold pathogens combine, causing uncontrollable cold and slippery diarrhea. It has proven effective repeatedly for elderly patients and those with deficiency who are critically ill.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) (both processed by frying); Baifuling (Poria) (each one liang); Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (processed by frying); Baijiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens/Processed Ginger) (processed by frying, each half liang); Dingxiang (Syzygbii Aromatisati Flos) (one fen).
Grind all into fine powder, make pills using rice paste, sized like paulownia seeds. Take fifty pills on an empty stomach with rice drink.
This formula treats deficiency-cold of the Zang-Fu organs, unceasing diarrhea, extreme emaciation, as well as postpartum diarrhea in women, particularly when Dongxie (profuse watery diarrhea) is critical and severe.
Huoxiangye (Agastaches Herba), Caodoukourén (Cardamomi Fructus) (processed by frying), Qingju pi (Citri Reticulatae Viride Pericarpium) (each four liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dingxiang (Syzygbii Aromatisati Flos) (each half liang); Wumei (Mume Fructus) (fifty fruits); Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen) (ten fruits, processed by frying).
Cut the herbs into small pieces. Each dose uses four qian. Add two zhan of water and a pinch of glutinous rice, decoct until seven-tenths remain, strain, and take warm.
