The methods for promoting conception have no fixed rules; medication should be tailored to the individual, with each person having their suitable prescription. Therefore, those with cold constitutions are suited to warming agents; those with heat constitutions are suited to cooling agents; those with slipping (e.g., spermatorrhea, habitual abortion) are suited to astringents; and those with deficiency are suited to tonics. By removing bodily imbalances, Yin and Yang will harmonize, and reproductive function will become prominent. People today do not understand this principle; they only know to pass on ready-made prescriptions. Would what suits one person necessarily suit another? Moreover, if someone happens to achieve a result once, they spread its "miraculous efficacy" indiscriminately, leading others to imitate and take it blindly. Do they not realize that a hat fitting Zhang San may not fit Li Si? Below are ten prescriptions recorded for selection, which may yield therapeutic results.
For women with both Qi and Blood deficiency and irregular menstruation who cannot conceive, Yulin Pill (Yu Lin Zhu) adjusted according to circumstances is the most excellent. Secondly, Bazhen Yimu Pill (Eight-Treasure Motherwort Pill) is also good. For severe cases of cold viscera and Qi stagnation, Xusi Jiangsheng Pill (Continuing Offspring and Descending Birth Pill) is also effective.
Yulin Pill (see *New Formulas Eight Arrays · Yin Array*) treats women with combined Qi and Blood deficiency, irregular menstruation, intermittent periods, turbid leukorrhea, abdominal pain, soreness of the waist or back, poor appetite, emaciation, and infertility. After taking one or two *jin* (approx. 500-1000g), conception can occur. Among all prescriptions for promoting conception, none surpass this one.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Fu Ling (Poria), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, washed with wine, each 2 liang), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, each 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, steamed and pounded, each 4 liang), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, processed, 4 liang), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with wine), Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Glue Frost), Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, each 2 liang).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Chew one or two pills on an empty stomach, swallowing with wine or warm water, or swallow as small pills. If taken by men, add Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Hu Tao Rou (Walnut Kernel), Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), and Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Radix), each 2 liang. If the woman has delayed menstruation with abdominal pain, add Po Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried with wine) and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), each 1 liang; for severe cases, add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) 5 qian, soaked in water overnight then stir-fried. If there is abundant leukorrhea with abdominal pain, add Po Gu Zhi 1 liang and Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 5 qian, or add Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi) 1 liang processed with vinegar. If the uterus is severely cold, causing diarrhea or pain, add Zhi Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Pao Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum) as appropriate. If there is much depression and anger causing distension and stagnation, add Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma, stir-fried with wine) 2 liang, or Chen Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) 5 qian for severe cases. If there is blood heat with excessive fire and early menstruation with internal heat, add Chuan Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix) and Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), each 2 liang; alternatively, use a decoction temporarily to clear the heat before taking this formula, or use a decoction as a guide for administration as appropriate.
Bazhen Yimu Pill (see *Ancient Formulas of Fugen Gui*) treats dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, weakness of Spleen and Stomach, poor appetite, weakness in the four limbs, irregular menstruation, soreness of the waist and abdominal distension, intermittent menstruation, red and white leukorrhea, and alternating chills and fever. It is effective in all these cases. Conception can occur after one month of use. For severe deficiency, taking one *jin* of medicine will surely lead to conception.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried with soil), Fu Ling (Poria), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 1 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, washed with wine, each 2 liang), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 5 qian), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, stir-fried with vinegar, 1 liang), Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba, 4 liang, harvested in May-June, using only the upper half with leaves, dried without contact with iron tools, pounded into powder).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take one pill on an empty stomach with honey water or wine, or make small pills. For Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold with much stagnation, add Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) 1 liang, stir-fried with ginger juice. For abdominal distension and stuffiness, add Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) 1 liang, steamed over rice. For much depression, add Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 1 liang, processed with wine. This is the formula from Xu Sihe's *Yitong*. Another name for this formula is Bazhen Yimu Shiquan Pill, using 8 liang of Yi Mu Cao in the previous formula and adding 4 qian of Chen Xiang. Sihe said: "Nourishing and benefiting the Kun Yuan (Female Origin), tonifying Qi and Blood, eliminating strangury and leukorrhea, strengthening the body, harmonizing Qi during pregnancy, and tonifying deficiency postpartum, this is truly a sacred agent for women, a miraculous formula transcending past and present. Those with families must know this." I laugh at doctors of this era who only collect ancient formulas like Xiangfu Shengjin Dan as essential drugs for opening depression and regulating menstrration in women, failing to examine the differences in deficiency and excess between ancient and modern times. Ancient people had robust Qi, so Xiang Fu could be used to open and guide. Xiang Fu is pungent and dry, capable only of opening and breaking; excessive use greatly depletes Qi and Blood, making the deficient more deficient and the sick sicker, offering no help to tonification. Today, nine out of ten women are deficient and require tonification; using Xiang Fu to deplete them further gradually leads to a condition of timidity and weakness. Failure to differentiate early leads to danger and difficulty in recovery. Women with irregular menstruation, dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, and inherent physical weakness should take this for regulation. For blocked menstruation, one dose clears it immediately; for irregular menstruation, it regulates within a month; for inherent infertility, conception occurs within a month. Taking one dose occasionally during pregnancy stabilizes and secures the fetus. Taking one dose postpartum, dissolved with child's urine and wine, prevents stagnation and blood-dizziness symptoms. Frequent use tonifies deficiency and invigorates Blood, being extremely stable for treating various postpartum diseases. For rapid effect, dissolve and take with wine.
Xusi Jiangsheng Pill (see *Ancient Formulas of Fugen Gui*) treats women with damage and deficiency of the Five Viscera, cold and exhaustion of the Uterus, unable to conceive. It also treats men with cold semen and insecurity, weak sexual function, white turbidity, and nocturnal emission. For women, it treats leukorrhea with chills and fever, various deficiencies and hundred damages, night sweats, and shortness of breath, with no case unresponsive. This formula is recorded in Wen Juju's *Qiusi Baosheng Pian*. It says that Jiao Yuanwai of Tokyo had no legitimate heir for three generations. Later, he met a divine monk and asked the reason. The monk said: "There are three reasons for having no heir: First, ancestors lacked virtue, and oneself lacked conduct; Second, husband and wife's birth years might violate taboos (Note: These belong to idealistic terms); Third, spirit and essence are not guarded, and the wife's family blood is cold." Mr. Jiao asked: "Is there a way to treat this?" The monk said: "First cultivate virtue, then cultivate the body." Three years later, at Taishan, an acolyte gave him a prescription named Xusi Jiangsheng Pill. Following the prescription, within less than twenty years, several descendants became noble and prominent. This formula contains no bizarre or destructive substances; it is both warming and consolidating. For those with cold deficiency of the Blood Sea, it is definitely beneficial. However, its warming power is sufficient, but tonifying power is insufficient. If added with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), and Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root), each 1 liang, the Eight Treasures are complete, and the functions of warming, tonifying, and assisting reproduction will be significant. Thus, it was named Jiawei Xusi Jiangsheng Pill (Modified Xusi Jiangsheng Pill).
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed with wine), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with wine), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, calcined), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, processed), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, half raw half cooked), Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, eyes removed), Tai Wu Yao (Stemonae Rhizoma, each 1 liang), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried with wine), Chuan Niu Xi (Cyathulae Radix, soaked in wine), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, hairs removed), Bei Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, each 5 qian), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece weighing 1 liang, make a hole under the navel, insert 1 qian of Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), wrap in dough and bake until ripe, remove Zhu Sha, keep as coating), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha, large pieces, soak in child's urine for 49 days, change every 5 days, take out, coat with 1 liang of Liu Huang (Sulfur) powder mixed with wine, paste with paper skin, soak in rice vinegar, seal thickly with salt mud, wait until dry, calcine with 5 jin of charcoal, grind into powder, use only 2 liang per batch, store the rest for reuse).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, make pills the size of tung tree seeds using glutinous rice paste boiled in wine, coat with the previously reserved Zhu Sha (Cinnabar). Take 30-50 pills initially, gradually increasing to 70-80 pills, on an empty stomach with boiling water, salt water, or warm wine.
For men with balanced visceral Qi but insufficient Essence and Blood, Hushao Dan (Hushao Pill), Quanlu Wan (Whole Deer Pill), and Wubi Shanyao Wan (Peerless Yam Pill) are suitable. Secret Formula Quanlu Wan (see *Ancient Formulas Eight Arrays · Bu Array*) tonifies various deficiencies and hundred damages, Five Labors and Seven Injuries; its effects cannot be fully described. Each person making one batch and taking it can extend life by one cycle (12 years). The method requires four people to jointly process one deer, dividing it for consumption. After a year, they process another together. Four people processing together for four years means each person gets one whole deer. If one person processes a batch alone, it may spoil due to long storage, resulting in incomplete medicinal potency.
Take a middle-aged deer, bind and kill it, remove hair, wash the entrails clean, cook with deer meat and wine until done. Cut the meat horizontally, bake dry, and grind into powder. Take the skin and entrails, return to the original broth, boil down to glue, mix with herb powder and minced meat, add refined honey, and pound into pills. The bones must be酥 roasted (roasted until crisp) and ground into powder, added together.
