The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian nourishes the fetus. During this period, acupuncture and moxibustion should not be applied to this meridian. It belongs to the Stomach and governs the mouth and eyes. At this time, the fetus's mouth and eyes are fully formed. One should harmonize the five flavors in diet, consume sweet and delicious foods, but avoid overeating. If sudden fetal restlessness occurs in this month, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, abdominal distension and fullness, body edema, palpitations with fright, sudden vaginal discharge, abdominal pain as if falling, and vexing pain in the hands and feet, Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) is appropriate.
Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 sheng) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 2 liang), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 liang), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 4 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, 6 liang), Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 15 pieces).
Boil in 7 sheng of water until half remains, then dissolve Ejiao into the decoction, add 2 sheng of wine, and boil down to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Consume congee between doses.
In the seventh month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Wood to form bones. The mother should engage in moderate physical exertion, shaking her limbs, and avoid excessive comfort or idleness. Perform flexion and extension movements to circulate Qi and Blood. Dwell in dry places, avoid cold foods in the diet, and consume rice and sorghum to consolidate the Couli (skin pores and interstitial spaces). This is referred to as nourishing the bones and strengthening the teeth. In this month, the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian nourishes the fetus; acupuncture and moxibustion should not be applied to this meridian. It belongs to the Lung and governs the skin and hair. At this time, the fetus's skin and hair are fully formed. The mother should speak little and avoid crying, refrain from bathing, wearing thin clothes, or drinking cold beverages. If sudden fright and agitation occur in this month, accompanied by abdominal pain, sudden vaginal discharge, cold extremities, a faint and cold pulse, vexing heat, abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and frequent stiffness and rigidity of the neck and lower back, Congbai Tang (Scallion White Decoction) is appropriate.
Congbai (Scallion White, 14 stalks each 3-4 cun long) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (each 1 sheng), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos, 2 he), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root), Zhihuangqi (Honey-fried Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 3 liang), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, 4 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, 8 liang).
Boil in 7 sheng of water until half remains, then dissolve Ejiao into the decoction, add 3 sheng of wine, and boil down to 4 sheng. Divide into four doses. Take three times during the day and once at night, aiming to induce sweating. If no sweat occurs, add Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 1 liang) and take again. After autumn, do not force sweating.
In the eighth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Earth to form skin and flesh. The mother should maintain a calm mind and rest quietly, avoiding excessive strain on Qi. This consolidates the Couli and gives luster to the complexion. In this month, the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian nourishes the fetus; acupuncture and moxibustion should not be applied to this meridian. It belongs to the Large Intestine and governs the nine orifices. At this time, the fetus's nine orifices are fully formed. Avoid dry/hot foods and extreme anger. If Wind-Cold is contracted due to exposure or contact, causing generalized body pain, alternating chills and fever, fetal restlessness, frequent dizziness and headache, coldness below the umbilicus, milky white urine (or green/yellow), chills, cold and painful lower back, and blurred vision or blindness, Shaoyao Tang (Peony Decoction) is appropriate.
Baishao (White Peony Root, 4 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome, 6 liang), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), TuBaizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma fried in soil), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 liang), Qiangbai (Cut Scallion White, 1 sheng).
Boil in 5 sheng of water and 4 sheng of wine down to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. Take twice during the day and once at night.
In the ninth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Stone to perfect the skin and hair. The six Fu-organs and all joints are complete. Drink sweet wine, eat sweet foods, and loosen the belt. This nourishes the hair and enhances vitality. In this month, the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian nourishes the fetus; acupuncture and moxibustion should not be applied to this meridian. It belongs to the Kidney and governs the network vessels (Luo-connecting vessels). At this time, the fetus's network vessels are fully connected. Avoid damp and cold environments, and do not wear clothes that have been heated by moxa or fire. If sudden dysentery occurs in this month, with abdominal fullness and urgency, fetal Qi rushing up to the heart, lower back pain, inability to turn the body, and shortness of breath, Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction) is appropriate.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 liang), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 20 pieces), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (each 2 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, 1 liang).
Boil in 9 sheng of water down to 3 sheng, add 8 he of honey, and divide into four doses. Dysentery will cease.
In the tenth month of pregnancy, the five Zang-organs are complete, and the six Fu-organs are unobstructed. Heaven and Earth Qi are gathered in the Dantian. Thus, the joints and Shen (Spirit) are fully prepared. Only the timing for birth remains. In this month, the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian nourishes the fetus; acupuncture and moxibustion should not be applied to this meridian. It belongs to the Bladder. It is appropriate to take Huatai Yao (Fetus-Slipping/Parturition-Assisting Medicines). From the first to the tenth month, only the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian have no specific governing task, because the Heart is the Sovereign Officer and its function is non-action (Wuwei).
Protection of Conception
According to *Baochan Yaolu* (Essential Record for Protecting Childbirth): After conception, one should not consume meat from cattle, sheep, dogs, etc., nor crab, turtle, black carp, scaleless fish, pepper, ginger, garlic, or spicy foods. After conception, one should not watch plays or view ghostly images. Extreme anger must be strictly avoided; one should not speak ill words or use whips. Anger damages Qi and Blood, preventing them from nourishing the fetus, often leading to fetal disturbance. Even if the fetus is not disturbed, anger entering the fetus may cause the child to produce excessive phlegm after birth. One should not climb high or use ladders, fearing injury from falls. One should not reach for objects high up, fearing injury to the fetus which may cause the fetus to cry in the abdomen. There is a method to soothe fetal crying: simply have the mother bow for a moment, and it will settle. After three to five months of conception, the body should be tightly bound to prevent the fetus from shifting. Alternatively, in the sixth to seventh or seventh to eighth months, if the fetus suddenly moves chaotically for two to three days, with intermittent pain or relief, or with amniotic fluid leakage, but without severe lower back pain and with the pulse not having left the meridian, this is called "Nongtai" (Playing Fetus). Another case is one month before delivery, where sudden lower back pain occurs but labor does not start; this is called "Zhuan Tai" (Turning Fetus) or "Shiyue" (Testing Month). Whether amniotic fluid is present or not is not detrimental. One should sit, lie, walk, or stand upright, avoiding fear, worry, or pressure to prevent mishaps. Neither of these is true labor; they result from bending and touching improperly.
Commentary by Shen Jin'ao: There are many books on obstetrics such as *Dasheng Lu* and *Dasheng Bian*. However, among those that are clear, detailed, careful, essential, and every word actionable, *Baochan Yaolu* is the most excellent. Therefore, I have excerpted its statements for the sections on antenatal care, miscarriage, impending labor, and postpartum care, so that pregnant women know what to follow. Fearing that people might overlook it, I specifically note this here to make readers attentive. Only the five characters "Qingxi Zhuren Shi" (Recorded by Master Qingxi) appear at the end of the volume; unfortunately, his name is unknown.
