Yu Wentai, in the prime of life, presented with coughing and hemoptysis (coughing up blood), frequent abdominal pain, nocturnal polydipsia accompanied by nocturnal emission, a sensation of distension in the back, and short and weak pulses in both hands. The guan positions on both sides were wiry and large. The left chi position was weak, while the right chi position was slippery and large. The pattern was identified as insufficiency of Heart Blood, phlegm accumulation in the Middle Jiao, blood stasis between the diaphragm, and deficient fire (Yin Fire) in the Yin aspect. Initially, the Upper Jiao was cleared and purified using Gardenia Seed (Shanzhiren), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi), Salvia Root (Danshen), Poria (Fuling), Licorice Root (Gancao), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), Tangerine Peel (Juhong), and Yiyuan San. After ten doses, the back distension gradually subsided. However, the cough persisted, so the prescription was changed to Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Apricot Kernel (Xingren), Fermented Pinellia Paste (Banxiaqu), Yiyuan San, Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Trichosanthes Seed (Gualouren), and Licorice Root (Gancao). After ten doses, the cough ceased. Yet, the abdominal pain remained, so Yuxian Dan was administered together with Baohe Wan from Danxi. This resulted in the passage of a large amount of thick, accumulated phlegm from the bowels. Subsequently, treatment with Ginseng Root (Renshen), White Poria (Baifuling), White Peony Root (Baishao), Aster Root (Ziwan), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Licorice Root (Gancao), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui), and Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) was used for regulation, leading to recovery.
The daughter of Elder Shao Bocheng, whose menstruation was just occurring, caught a wind pathogen after bathing. She mistakenly took a ginseng tonic, which triggered severe chills and fever, vomiting, and irritability. Soon after, she developed trismus (lockjaw), mental restlessness, and unconscious behaviors such as picking at clothes and touching the bed. At that time, it was the last day of midsummer. I reasoned that there was phlegm in the Upper Jiao, and due to the mistaken use of tonification, the airway became obstructed. A modified Wendan Decoction was prescribed: Pinellia Tuber (Banxia) 4 qian, Tangerine Peel (Juhong) 2 qian, White Poria (Baifuling), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi), Bamboo Shavings (Zhuru), and Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong) each 1 qian, Yiyuan San 3 qian, and Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) 3 slices. Decocted in water and drunk, the patient stabilized after one dose. Later, due to slight overexertion, headache recurred, with phlegm-fire rushing upward, causing back distension and lower back pain. Treatment with Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Mint (Bohe), Licorice Root (Gancao), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhike), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Wine-fried Scutellaria Root (Jiu Huangqin), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangpi), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), Ophiopogon Tuber (Maidong), Gardenia Seed (Shanzhiren), Poria (Fuling), and Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) was used for regulation, resulting in full recovery.
Madam Jin, a relative of Su Shuquan’s mother, had suffered from metrorrhagia (blood flooding) the previous autumn. One hundred days after recovery, during the Shangsi Festival, she caught a wind pathogen while bathing. External cold bound internal heat, leading to distension in the anterior and posterior chest, swelling and pain in the four limbs, facial edema, aversion to cold with fever, frequent yawning, difficulty in urination and defecation, a constant sweet taste in the mouth, and floating, large, and rapid pulses in all six positions. A decoction of Bupleurum Root (Chaihu), Perilla Leaf (Zisu), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhike), Areca Peel (Dafupi), Magnolia Bark (N Houpu), Wine-fried Scutellaria Root (Jiu Huangqin), and Turmeric Rhizome (Jiang Huang) was administered. Mild sweating occurred at night, and the chest and abdomen felt slightly relieved, but the limbs remained swollen. Radish Seed (Luobozhi) was added. The patient then felt irritable and experienced acid regurgitation. The prescription was changed to Erchen Decoction plus Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Areca Peel (Dafupi), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Ginger-processed Coptis Rhizome (Jiang Lian), Immature Bitter Orange (Zhike), and Gardenia Fruit (Shanzhizi) each 8 fen, Yiyuan San 2 qian, Coix Seed (Yiyiren) 3 qian, and Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu) 3 fen. After administration, half of the limb swelling subsided, and the facial edema completely disappeared. Subsequently, she complained of lower back pain, belching, and epigastric burning discomfort (zaocuo). Liu Junzi Decoction plus Coix Seed (Yiyiren), Ginger-processed Coptis Rhizome (Jiang Lian), Magnolia Bark (N Houpu), Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), Curcuma Longa Rhizome (Yujin), Amomum Fruit (Sharen), and Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) was used for regulation over half a month. The limbs fully recovered, and the epigastric discomfort resolved.
