Ni Wu Niangzi, after fainting due to wind-stroke (Zhong Feng), presented with deviation of the mouth and eyes, inability to flex or extend the left foot and right hand, thirst, difficult urination, tightness in both cheeks, and dysarthria. When questioned, she answered haltingly; when not questioned, she remained silent. She had no desire for food or drink and was fifty years old. Various physicians failed to effect a cure. I initially prescribed Liang Ge San (Cool the Epigastrium Powder) with Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) decocted in water, taken with two pills of Qian Shi An Shen Wan (Child's Calming the Spirit Pill). That night, she had four bowel movements. The next day, her spirit cleared, and the deviation of her mouth and eyes improved by half, except for the Jia Che (ST6) area which remained tight, preventing speech. Upon careful examination of her form and qi, she appeared weak. I then administered Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Huashi (Talcum), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Shichangpu, Yuanzhi, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). After taking it, her mental clarity greatly improved; she could sit up without assistance, and her speech became slightly more fluent.
I changed the prescription to Liu Jun Zi Tang with Maidong, Tianhuafen, Shichangpu, Danggui, Wujia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma). After ten doses, she recovered completely.
Wang Zuquan's wife suffered from headache and nocturnal fever, aversion to cold as if chilled by wind, profuse sweating like rain, heat in the upper body and cold in the lower body, thirst without desire to drink, generalized body pain, a mass in the abdomen the size of a fist that was hard as stone, borborygmus, scanty urine, and complete loss of appetite. Her pulse was slippery at the Right Guan position and wiry-rapid at the Left position. Investigating the origin, it was stated that she had become extremely angry and then injured her digestion by eating. Market physicians treated her with formulas containing Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), which exacerbated the heat and severely depleted Spleen Qi. I treated her with Ping Wei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) plus Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus). After four consecutive doses, Middle Qi began to move slightly, but the nocturnal fever persisted. I then administered Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), after which both the chills and fever subsided. However, abdominal pain and tenesmus appeared. I deduced that this indicated the expulsion of accumulated stagnation, so I prescribed Bai Liu Shen Wan (White Six Divine Pills). The abdominal pain and tenesmus were eliminated. Finally, I switched to Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) with Xiangfu, Wumei (Mume Fructus), and Shanzha. After taking this, her illness was well cured.
