Xiaozhong believes they are easily distinguished; the confusion arises from names. Ancients named herbs by shape similarity, e.g., Wutou, Gouji, Heshi. Fan Zao He and Mother Dingxiang are different substances but named similarly due to shape resembling chicken tongues. For drugs with same name but different substance, e.g., Jinying, Dijin, this is not strange. Both types of Jishe Xiang have specific indications. Fan Zao He is obtained from Rush Xiang (Frankincense) and used in trauma treatments. Mother Dingxiang is aged cloves, extremely aromatic, used by ancients for holding in mouth, and currently for regulating qi and warming medicines. This is why they are easily distinguished.
