Twitching without cessation, ceasing and then twitching again. Startled crying accompanied by convulsions. Sweating with cold feet. Phlegm filling the chest and throat. Mouth open and eyes staring straight up.
In acute wind (Jing Feng) [Acute Convulsive Disorder], the eyes roll back, blood flows from the mouth, the two legs tremble, the abdomen twitches, or the spirit is sluggish while feeling for clothes, or the condition is severe with coma and shortness of breath, medicines cannot be forced down, opening the orifices does not induce sneezing, heat and pain in the heart region, sudden loud crying—these are incurable. In chronic wind (Man Jing), the four limbs are cold, vomiting, diarrhea, and coughing, the face is dark and the spirit miserable, the voice is hoarse like a crow with stomach pain, qi movement in the two hypochondria, white sores in the mouth, hair standing erect with head shaking, eyes blue and unresponsive, salivary rattling with wheezing and throat obstruction, soft head, incontinence of urine and stool, and pulling of hands and feet to one side—all are incurable. In chronic spleen wind (Man Pi Feng), the body is cold with sticky sweat, lying straight like a corpse with wheezing and coughing, soft head and stiff back, locked jaw with head shaking, phlegm sound like sawing, no luster on the face, retracted lips with coarse breathing—incurable.
When treating acute wind in infants during convulsions, do not cause panic or disturbance; this is not something to fear. Although chronic wind is quiet, it is a critical illness. When acute wind is convulsing, only support and protect the child; do not grasp or restrain forcibly, as the pathogenic wind-qi is vigorous, and there is fear that it may flow into the sinews and tendons, leading to contracture of the hands and feet.
[Xue Ji] The human body has nine zang organs. The Heart stores the Shen (Spirit), and the Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul). Both meridians govern Blood. When Blood is deficient, the Shen and Hun lose their tranquility, generating fright palpitations (Jing Ji). The Classics state: "The color of the East is green, entering into communication with the Liver; its disease manifests as fright and terror." It also states: "Disease arising from Yang-Ming and Jue-Yin primarily presents as fright and terror." Fright (Jing) is the sudden beating of the Heart accompanied by terror; Palpitations (Ji) is the beating of the Heart accompanied by restlessness. These two conditions arise from Heart deficiency and Blood insufficiency, hence symptoms of forgetfulness follow. Use Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) combined with calming-spirit medications. Danxi stated: There are also cases attributable to Phlegm, suitable for using Wen Dan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) added with Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root). If triggered by overthinking, it is a deficiency pattern, use Yang Xin Tang (Nourish the Heart Decoction). Intermittent onset indicates Phlegm, use Fu Ling Wan (Poria Pill). Easily startled by events indicates Heart and Gallbladder deficiency and timidity, use Wen Dan Tang. Frequent waking from dreams and nightmares indicates Blood failing to return to its source, use Zhen Zhu Mu Wan (Mother-of-Pearl Pill). Restless sleep indicates the Hun of the Liver failing to maintain its residence, use Ding Zhi Wan (Stabilize Will Pill). Fear preventing solitude indicates Gallbladder Qi deficiency and cold, use Fu Shen Tang (Poria Decoction). Restlessness in sleep indicates Gallbladder Qi excess-heat, use Suan Zao Ren Wan (Ziziphus Seed Pill). Vertigo with fright palpitations indicates internal production of Wind-Phlegm, use Chen Sha Yuan Zhi Wan (Cinnabar and Polygala Pill) from *Ben Shi Fang*. Overthinking and depression with Spleen deficiency and Qi stagnation, use Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). Although these syndromes are said to belong to the Heart and Liver, the governing of Blood actually lies with the Spleen. The emotion of the Spleen is Thought (Si); excessive thought consumes Blood, failing to nourish the Liver and Heart, which is caused by the Spleen. Internal movement of thought invariably labors the Heart. The Heart is the organ of Sovereign Fire and the master of the twelve officials. The virtue of a sovereign is authority without anger and governance through non-action; thus, it should be stabilized by tranquility and guarded against reckless movement. Movement causes Ministerial Fire to converge, fanning and scorching Yin Essence. Once Essence and Blood are depleted, Fire erupts alone in emptiness; this is the origin of fright palpitations. The Fire of the Five Emotions is beyond the control of the Heart. Therefore, those treating Spleen disorders must know how to nourish the Heart; those nourishing the Heart must know tranquility and reducing desires. Yet who does not think? Righteous thinking eliminates reckless desires. Zhu Xi said: "One must ensure that the Dao Mind (Moral Mind) is always the master of the body, while the Ren Mind (Human Mind) obeys it." This is the method of good cultivation of the mind.
Wen Dan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) treats Heart and Gallbladder deficiency and timidity, being easily startled by events, or ominous dreams leading to heart fright and gallbladder terror, Qi stagnation generating saliva, saliva battling with Qi, transforming into various syndromes, or shortness of breath and palpitation fatigue, or recurrent spontaneous sweating. Gallbladder deficiency fails to control the Spleen, causing Spleen water-dampness to arise.
