(Li Dongyuan) Treats conditions where dietary injury damages the Stomach, and fatigue/overwork injures the Spleen. Fire-pathogens take advantage of this deficiency to invade, generating severe heat. The pulse at the right Guan position is slow and weak (indicating Spleen deficiency), or wiry (indicating Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth), or floating and rapid. Li Dongyuan stated: "When damp-heat combine, Yang Qi declines day by day and fails to ascend. The Qi of the Spleen and Stomach flows downward into the Liver and Kidneys; this is like having only Autumn and Winter without Spring and Summer. Only by draining the Yin Fire and raising Yang Qi, using wind herbs with thin flavors to raise and disperse, can the Yin Fire be prevented from causing disease, allowing Yang Qi to generate."

Chaihu, Shengma, and Qianghuo assist Yang and benefit the Stomach, thereby ascending the clear Yang Qi. Renshen, Cangzhu, Huangqin, and Gancao tonify Qi and drain dampness, thereby supplementing the Spleen and Stomach. Huangqin and Huanglian...
(The *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats chronic illness leading to emaciation and weakness, with incessant vomiting and regurgitation. (Cold in the Stomach causes vomiting; Heat in the Stomach also causes vomiting; retained phlegm and accumulated fluids all cause vomiting. This refers to dry heaving caused by deficient fire rising upward due to chronic illness.) It also treats hiccups and regurgitation following vomiting and diarrhea, resulting from Stomach Qi deficiency.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) [2 sheng], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [5 liang], Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [1 liang], Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) [0.5 jin], Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) [30 pieces].
Xu Zhongke said: This is hiccups caused by Stomach deficiency and rebellious Qi, but it is not comparable to the depletion of true Yuan Qi. Therefore, Renshen and Gancao are used to cultivate the primordial Qi in the Stomach, while Chenpi and Zhuru, one cold and one warm, descend the rebellious Qi above. Shengjiang and Dazao are used to disseminate the Upper Jiao, allowing the Yang Qi in the chest to gradually become smooth and descend. Since the Upper Jiao receives Qi from the Middle Jiao, and the Middle Jiao also relies on the Upper Jiao, once the Upper Jiao is disseminated, the Middle Qi naturally harmonizes. If Banxia, Maidong, Chifuling, and Pipaye are added, it is also called Chenpi Zhuru Tang.
(Yan Shi) Treats hiccups resulting from chronic illness, specifically those caused by Cold.
Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Shidi (Kaki Calyx) [2 qian], Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [1 qian], Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) [5 slices]. Another formula adds Chenpi, Banxia, Fuling, Gancao, and Liangjiang.
Dingxiang drains the Lung, warms the Stomach, and warms the Kidney; Shengjiang removes phlegm, opens depression, and disperses Cold; Shidi is bitter and astringent, descending Qi; Renshen assists True Qi, allowing it to spread and function. (Zhu Danxi stated: "Human Yin Qi relies on the Stomach for nourishment. When the Earth element is injured, Liver Wood carries Ministerial Fire straight up the clear pathways, causing hiccups. Ancients believed this was Stomach Cold and used Dingxiang and Shidi, which cannot clear phlegm-heat or promote Qi flow, but only aid Fire. Li Shizhen said: Zhu's adherence to treating heat with cold is an overcorrection. According to ancient methods, Yin-type hiccups were often treated with acrid-hot herbs such as Guizhi, Fuzi, Ganjiang, Wuzhuyu, Dingxiang, and Huixiang, with many successes; Yang-type hiccups were treated with Juhong Zhuru Tang. *Yuji Wei Yi* states: Hiccups originate from depleted Yin Qi and sudden excess of Yang Fire rushing upward. Qi emerges from the Stomach, enters the Lung, and produces sound. Li Dongyuan used cooling herbs to drain heat and lower fire. However, in Yin-pattern hiccups, since Yin Qi has first declined and Yang Fire is also exhausted, floating in the chest, it needs to be dispersed. Thus, cold herbs are not used; instead, warm herbs are used to nourish the Stomach and retain Yang Qi. When Stomach Qi harmonizes, recovery occurs, illustrating the principle that 'when Yang generates, Yin grows.'"
Removing Renshen and Shengjiang, and adding Zhuru and Juhong, creates Dingxiang Shidi Zhuru Tang, also known as Juhong Zhuru Tang, treating Yang-type hiccups. (A question arose: Why are Zhiimu and Huangbai not used for Yang-type hiccups? Wu Hegao said: This is a deficient pathogen of the Shaoyang, not an excess pathogen. Therefore, herbs with thin flavors like Shidi and Zhuru are used as the main treatment. If heavy-flavored herbs like Zhiimu and Huangbai were used, they would further damage Middle Qi, worsening stagnation, would they not? The ancients weighed this deeply.) Removing Renshen and Shengjiang, it is also named Dingxiang Shidi Tang. Yan Shi...
