[Quxie Dan] The Quxie Dan (Evil-Expelling Pill) for treating malaria is a prescription from Zhao Xueyu of Chuzhou.
On the fourth day of the fifth lunar month, select black soybeans [Glycine max], soak them in cold water until early morning on the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu). Take one tael of high-quality Realgar [Realgar] and grind it into an extremely fine powder by hand. Mix it thoroughly with two taels of raw Minium [Minium]. Peel the black soybeans and grind them finely into a paste to mix with the medicine. When making pills, divide them into large and small sizes. After forming, coat them with fine Cinnabar [Cinnabaris]. On the day the fever attacks, at the beginning of Wugeng (early morning, 3-5 AM), swallow the pills with Jinghua water (well water drawn before dawn). Stop taking the large pills when they are the size of Sophora japonica seeds.
[Daxiao Madan] A physician named Qin from Lei Yang in Hengzhou treats both recent and remote-onset malaria with miraculous effect; this prescription was passed down by Ge Cheng.
Herbs include: Changshan (Dichroa Root [Dichroae Radix])—select those resembling chicken bones; Qingpi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride [Aurantii Fructus Immaturus])—remove the pith; Wumei (Mume Fructus [Prunus Mume])—remove the pits; Binglang (Areca Seed [Arecae Semen])—select those resembling chicken hearts; Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus [Amomi Fructus Rotundus])—remove the skin; Gancao (Licorice Root [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma])—stir-fried with honey or roasted.
Grind the above herbs equally into a coarse powder. For each dose, take two "da qian" (large coins/measurements). Use seven parts water and seven parts wine, decoct together until seven parts remain. Strain the dregs. On the day of the attack, take warm at the beginning of Wugeng, then sleep for a while. Avoid hot foods for half a day. If cold symptoms predominate, increase wine and decrease water; if heat symptoms predominate, decrease wine and increase water. Must be decocted slowly over low heat until fully cooked. It should not cause vomiting or diarrhea, and has great efficacy. I have used it frequently among relatives, and it works effectively after just one dose, which is wonderful. The prescription from Yuan Sihu of Luling omits Wumei and Caoguo, adding three parts of Baijiang (White Ginger [Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens]). Changshan should be sun-dried without fire exposure. Each herb at one tael constitutes one dose, using three sheng of water. Take one dose after the early morning snack and another after breakfast. The prescription from Zhang Zhishi, a physician in Shaoxing, omits Wumei and Binglang, substituting Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb [Fritillariae Bulbus]) and Chenpi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium [Aurantii Pericarpium]). For those with predominant cold, add Liangjiang (Galangal Rhizome [Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma]). The rest is the same as Physician Qin's formula, but decocted with Jiang (Ginger [Zingiberis Rhizoma]), Zao (Jujube [Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus]), and Wumei.
[Feiluofmian Formula]
Herbs include: Feiluomian (Fine Flour [Tritici Farina]); Danshi (Black Fermented Soybean [Sojae Semen Nigrum Preparatum])—stir-fried; Xionghuang (Realgar [Realgar]); Ruxiang (Frankincense [Olibanum]); Huangdan (Minium [Minium])—one tael, stir-fried until color changes; Taoren (Peach Kernel [Persicae Semen])—one hundred kernels, soaked in boiling water.
Grind all into a fine powder. Grind a single-clove garlic into a mud-like paste, strain through new cloth, and mix with the powder to form pills the size of a cocklebur fruit. Coat with Cinnabar [Cinnabaris]. The medicine must be compounded at noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, facing northeast, without speaking. Avoid being seen by chickens, dogs, women, mourners, monks, or Taoist priests. Swallow one pill with warm wine or Jinghua water on the day of the attack, facing northeast. Pregnant women must not take this pill. This pill was previously dispensed by the family of Tang Zhongju, and its efficacy was never in doubt!
