Wang Shi said: The discussion on Tou Tong (Headache) attributes it to Da Han (Severe Cold) penetrating internally to the Sui Gao (Bone Marrow). Therefore, Tou Feng (Head Wind) also originates from Feng Han (Wind-Cold) entering the brain. Ben Shi's formula theory states that among women suffering from Tou Feng (Head Wind), ten out of five cases occur. Perhaps this is because women do not wear headscarves to ward off Wind-Cold. Men occasionally suffer from it as well; if they have less hair on the head, it is likely baldness at the Xinhui (GV22) and Qianding (GV21) areas. To moxa-treat Tou Feng (Head Wind), one should first moxa Xinhui (GV22), Baihui (GV20), Qianding (GV21), etc. For Tou Feng (Head Wind) connected to eye pain, one should moxa Shangxing (GV23), Shencong (EX-HN6), Houding (GV22), etc. I once self-moxa and verified its efficacy; teaching others to moxa also proved effective.
To treat Tou Feng (Head Wind), moxa the Houding (GV22) acupoint. It is located 1.5 cun posterior to Baihui (GV20) and 1.5 cun anterior to Qiangjian (GV18). Moxa 5 zhuang. It also treats Dian Ji (Epilepsy) and Yao Tou Kou Suo (Shaking Head and Mouth Deviation). Moxa 3 zhuang for each.
To treat Tou Feng (Head Wind) facial swelling and stiff neck unable to look back, puncture the Tianyou (TE16) acupoint of the Hand-Shaoyang Meridian, two points. Located above the Jin (Muscle/Tendon) and Quepen (Luo Gu / Supraclavicular Fossa), posterior to Tiannong (SJ17), anterior to Tianzhu (BL10), inferior to Wanggu (GB12), and above the Hairline. Insert needle 5 fen, retain for 7 hu (breaths). Do not use tonification, nor moxa. If moxa is used, it causes Mian Zhong (Facial Swelling) and Yan He (Eye Closure). Take two points from the Foot-Taiyang Meridian, located in the third row of the Back-Shu area, medial to the shoulder blade, below the sixth thoracic vertebra, three cun apart laterally. Take them while sitting upright. This is where the Foot-Taiyang meridian qi emerges. Insert needle 6 fen, retain for 3 hu (breaths), discharge method coordinated with 5 xi (inhales). Afterwards, puncture Tianyou (TE16) and Fengchi (GB20). The disease will then heal. If these are not punctured first, it will be difficult to cure the disease. These are methods for treating chronic diseases with flowing accumulation. I cite this as an example; learners must examine carefully.
