The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) records: There is a disease manifesting as lower abdominal pain, with roots fixed in the upper, lower, left, and right directions, named *Fuliang* (Hidden Beam). The pathology involves pus and blood inside, located outside the intestines and stomach; it cannot be treated with purgative methods.
This disease originates below the umbilicus, thus causing lower abdominal pain, with roots fixed in the upper, lower, left, and right directions; there is pus and blood inside, located outside the intestines and stomach, therefore causing pain circling the umbilicus. This is a disease of wind-water (*Fengshui*). Thus, the spleen area and limbs of the body are swollen, named *Fuliang*. It is so named because it hides within the body like a beam. Its symptoms vary in depth: if located above the umbilicus, it is a "reverse" pattern, because the pathogenic qi rebels and moves upward; if located below the umbilicus, it is a "following" pattern, because the pathogenic qi follows the downward direction. The treatment method must not involve forceful movement; moving it forcibly will cause difficulty in urination. Therefore, the treatment is included among acupuncture methods.
The accumulation of the Heart is named *Fuliang*, originating above the umbilicus, large as an arm, extending upward to below the heart. This disease is often contracted on Geng-Xin days in autumn. Why is this said? Because Kidney disease transmits to the Heart; the Heart should transmit to the Lung. However, the Lung is prosperous in autumn, and that which is prosperous does not accept pathogenic factors. The Heart desires to return the pathogen to the Kidney, but the Kidney refuses to accept it. Thus, the pathogen remains and knots to form an accumulation. Hence, we know that *Fuliang* is contracted in autumn.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: When meridians and collaterals are affected by pathogens, accumulations arise in the intestines, stomach, and five zang organs, manifesting as *Fuliang*, *Xifen* (Accumulated Breath), *Feiqi* (Fat Qi), *Piqi* (Stagnant Qi), and *Ben Tun* (Running Piglet). When accumulations first begin to generate...
