怔忡这种病，是由于心血不足引起的。因为心主宰血液，血液是心的根本主宰，而心则是身体的君主。血液充足，心君自然安宁。
惊悸与怔忡不同。惊悸是因为受到巨大的惊吓，比如听到虚幻的声音，看到奇异的景象，登高涉险，或者梦见不祥之事，导致心神受惊扰乱。人的主宰在心，心所滋养的是血。一旦心血亏虚，神气就不能固守，这是惊悸产生的开端。所谓“惊”，是指遇到事情丧失志气，心受到冲撞，使人产生恐惧不安的样子，这就是惊。如果心虚且体内停聚水饮，就会感到胸中漉漉作响，虚气流动。水饮上凌于心，心火厌恶它，心不能安宁，使人产生郁郁寡欢的样子，这就是悸。对于惊证，给予豁痰定惊的方剂；对于悸证，给予逐水消饮的方剂。所谓的扶正补虚，不过是调养心血，平和心气罢了。如果使用过于刚燥的药物，可能会导致心火自炎，出现热极生风的证候。
心如同帝王，是神居住的宫殿，是五脏六腑的主宰，不受外邪直接侵犯。如果人的起居行为不当，寒暑调节失宜，导致脏腑内部受损，气血在外部耗散。因悲伤或喜乐过度……

Zhenchong (palpitations with a sense of emptiness and fear) is caused by insufficient Heart Blood. The Heart governs Blood, and Blood is the master of the Heart. The Heart is the ruler of the form. When Blood is abundant, the Heart Ruler naturally remains tranquil.
Jingji (startled palpitations) differs from Songji (palpitations due to fright). Jingji arises from great fright, such as hearing phantom sounds, seeing strange sights, climbing heights or crossing dangers, or dreaming of inauspicious events, which startle and disturb the Shen Spirit. What governs a person is the Heart; what nourishes the Heart is Blood. Once Heart Blood becomes deficient, the Shen Qi fails to remain secure; this is the beginning of Jingji. "Jing" (fright) refers to losing one's will upon encountering events, causing the Heart to be disrupted, leading to a state of timidity and fear; this is called Jing. If the Heart is deficient and water retention occurs, there is a gurgling sensation in the chest, and deficient Qi moves. Since Water ascends to oppress the Heart, the Heart Fire dislikes it, and the Heart cannot remain at ease, leading to a state of depression; this is called Ji. For Jing conditions, administer formulas that resolve phlegm and settle fright. For Ji conditions, administer formulas that expel water and eliminate fluid retention.所谓的扶虚 (supporting deficiency) merely involves nourishing Heart Blood and harmonizing Heart Qi. If overly acrid and dry herbs are used excessively, it may cause Heart Fire to flare up spontaneously, resulting in symptoms of wind generated from heat.
