Note: Danxi stated that Shaoyao is sour and cold, greatly damaging the generating Qi, so it is contraindicated postpartum. This is an exaggeration. The cold nature of Shaoyao is merely slightly cooling among blood-generating herbs, not as bitter and cold as Huangqin and Huanglian. If Shaoyao is contraindicated thus, then even colder herbs are unusable. I often see overly cautious mothers who, due to excessive warmth or strong constitution but over-tonification via diet/herbs, develop postpartum Fire, resulting in many heat diseases. Assuming all postpartum states are deficiency requiring only tonification is not perfect. Moreover, Shaoyao is clear, slightly sour and astringent, most suitable for syndromes of dissipating Yin Qi, making it an essential herb postpartum. This must be distinguished.
Yulin Zhu (Spirit Nourishing Pearl): Treats women with both Qi and Blood deficiency, irregular menstruation, intermittent flow, leukorrhea, abdominal pain, lower back soreness, poor appetite, emaciation, and infertility.
