(Ben Jing, Lower Grade)
[Flavor and Property] Bitter, cold, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats warm diseases (Wen Bing), high fever, irritability, and mania caused by severe cold damage (Shang Han); kills three types of parasites (San Chong) and scabies/ulcers; promotes urination and unblocks the water pathways.
[Nuclear Commentary] Says: It grows in the valleys of Mount Jing and is found throughout Shu region, with those from Shu being superior. The tree reaches several zhang in height and grows very rapidly. The leaves are dense like those of the locust tree but longer. In the third and fourth lunar months, it blooms with red-purple flowers, filling the surroundings with fragrance. The fruit resembles a golden pellet, green when raw and yellow when ripe. The leaves can be used for washing clothes; dragons fear them, and Xiezhi (a mythical beast) eats them. Processing: Stir-fry until dry, mix thoroughly with wine, steam until the peel becomes soft, then remove the peel and use the flesh. When using, either use the seed without the flesh, or the flesh without the seed. If using the seed, crush it, boil in rice water for one shichen (approx. 2 hours), dry in the sun, and use.
(Ben Jing, Lower Grade)
[Flavor and Property] Pungent, warm, toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats cough and rebellious qi caused by pathogenic factors; warms the middle jiao; expels dead muscle tissue in joints and skin; treats bi-syndrome pain with alternating chills and fever; directs qi downward. Long-term consumption prevents graying of hair, lightens the body, and increases longevity.
[Nuclear Commentary] Says: It originates from the valleys of Wudu and Ba Commandery. Currently, those from Western Regions in Quanzhou are considered the best, followed by those from Jiangyang and Jianping in Jinkang. The shrub is 5-6 chi tall, resembling Cornus officinalis (Zhu Yu) but smaller, with thorns. The leaves are tough and smooth. It does not flower but bears fruit directly among branches and leaves; the grains are round like small beans, shiny black seeds resembling human pupils, called "Jiao Mu" (Pepper Seeds). Harvest fruits in the eighth lunar month; the flesh is plump, the peel wrinkled, with a strong, pungent aroma. Processing: Remove the seeds and closed pods; moisten with good wine, steam from Si hour to Wu hour (approx. 9 AM to 1 PM), cover with a basin, wait until cool and odorless, then take out and seal immediately in porcelain vessels to prevent loss of potency. Apricot kernel (Xing Ren) acts as an assistant; salt enhances its flavor; it is incompatible with Dandelion Flower (Kuan Dong Hua), Saposhnikovia Root (Fang Feng), Aconite Root (Fu Zi), and Realgar (Xiong Huang). It can absorb mercury. For pepper poisoning, antidote with cold water or sesame paste decoction.
[Nuclear Commentary] Says: Regarding color, aroma, and flavor, the essence lies in the skin. It uniquely fruits without flowering, implying its stored power is profound and deep. Thus, it primarily warms the middle jiao. Its action moves from below to above, from inside to outside, disseminating broadly laterally. It addresses conditions where cold in the middle jiao causes pathology in form and qi. In terms of qi, it treats cough and rebellious qi due to pathogenic encroachment; in terms of form, it treats joint and skin pain due to bi-obstruction. Long-term consumption harmonizes both form and qi, thereby preventing hair graying, lightening the body, and extending life.
