Topical application can be used to treat various carbuncles and ulcers. It can reduce swelling, discharge pus, and relieve pain. It can cool and disperse various types of stasis-heat. Its taste is pungent, its texture is slippery, and its nature is mild and neutral. (Mu Furong [Hibiscus mutabilis] has a pungent taste and cold nature. It enters the Lung Meridian. It cools blood and dissipates heat. Its texture is sticky and slippery. For all kinds of carbuncles, ulcers, and sores, whether ulcerated or not, it can be applied externally. It is extremely effective in reducing swelling and relieving pain, acting to cool blood and detoxify.)
Camellia Flower
Its red color enters the Ying (Nutrient) level to cool blood. Its taste is sweet and slightly bitter, dispersing stasis pathogenic factors. (Camellia flowers bloom in winter, thus possessing a cold nature. Its red color causes it to enter the Blood level. Since all flowers have dispersing properties, it can be understood that it cools blood and disperses blood stasis. Observing its ability to treat hematemesis, epistaxis, and intestinal wind with lower bleeding, its efficacy can be inferred.)
Buddleja Flower
Its actions return to the Liver and Gallbladder; its nature belongs to sweet and cold. It clears heat and disperses wind; treating eye disorders is due to fire qi pressing inward. It nourishes Ying (Nutrient) and moistens dryness; since all flowers disperse, they remove obstructions and eliminate pathogenic factors. (Buddleja flower is purple in color, thus entering the Liver. It is sweet, cold, and non-toxic, thus able to moisten Liver dryness and nourish Liver blood. Because all flowers have dispersing properties, it can scatter Wind-Heat in the Liver. Once Wind-Heat is removed and Liver blood is nourished, all eye disorders can be eliminated.)
Goji Berry
Its nature is neutral and its color is red. It nourishes the Liver, tonifies the Kidney, and benefits True Yin. Its texture is moist and its taste is sweet. It brightens the eyes, augments Essence, and reduces deficiency heat. (Goji berries from Ganzhou, Gansu, are considered superior. They are sweet in taste, with fruits that are less moist but contain oil/lipids. Those produced locally elsewhere often have a bitter taste and inferior quality, making them unsuitable for use. Their nature is neutral, neither cold nor hot. Since all seeds have descending properties, implying a tendency to gather and move downward, they enter the Liver and Kidney meridians. They generate Essence and nourish Blood. When Essence and Blood are sufficient, vision becomes clear, thirst stops, bones and sinews become strong and agile, and consumptive diseases such as Xu Lao (deficiency exhaustion) are completely resolved.)
Cortex Lycii (Di Gu Pi)
It retreats latent heat to eliminate steaming bone sensation. It penetrates deep into the earth ("Yellow Springs") and descends to the Kidney region. It directs Lung Fire downward to calm asthma. It is sweet, cold, and white, clearing and purifying the Metal organ (Lung). (Cortex Lycii is the root bark of the Lycium tree. It penetrates deepest into the soil, hence its name. The coarse black outer skin is removed, and the white inner bark is used. It is sweet in taste, very cold in nature, and descending. It enters the Lung and Kidney meridians. It retreats latent heat; when Lung heat descends, wheezing and coughing are eliminated. When Kidney heat is cleared, conditions such as steaming bone disorder and night sweats are healed.)
