Aconitum (Note: Here refers to Perilla, not Aconite from Aconitum species): Planting and growth.
Perilla (Zisu) primarily functions to direct Qi downward and dispel cold in the middle Jiao; its seeds are particularly effective (recorded by famous physicians).
[Name] Guiren.
[Seedlings/Leaves] The *Tujing* records: "Su" is Purple Perilla. The plant is two to three chi tall, with a square stem and round leaves. The underside of the leaves is purple, and the aroma is very strong. Stems and leaves are harvested in summer, and fruits/seeds in autumn; both can be used as medicine. The *Erya* calls Perilla "Guiren," likely because it tastes pungent and resembles Ren (a type of fragrant herb), hence the name. However, there are several varieties of Perilla, including White Perilla, Fish Perilla, and Mountain Fish Perilla, all belonging to the Ren category. White Perilla also has a square stem and round leaves but is not purple; it is also very fragrant, and its seeds can be used as medicine. Fish Perilla resembles Artemisia capillaris (Yinchen), with large leaves and a fragrance; people in Wu use it to cook fish, hence the name Fish Perilla. Fish Perilla growing among mountain rocks is also called Mountain Fish Perilla. (Tao Hongjing stated) Perilla with purple undersides and a very strong aroma is best for medicinal use; those without purple color, lacking fragrance, and resembling Ren are called Wild Perilla and are unsuitable for medicinal use.
[Origin] The *Tujing* records: Old texts do not specify the producing provinces or lands; now it is found everywhere. (Authentic/Daodi material) That from Wu region is superior.
[Seasons] (Growth) Seedlings emerge in spring. (Harvest) Stems and leaves are taken in summer; fruits/seeds in autumn.
[Processing] Sun-dried.
[Medicinal Parts] Stem, leaves, and seeds.

[Nature] Warm, with dispersing properties.
[Odor/Taste Characteristics] Strong odor, thin taste, belongs to Yang.
[Odor] Fragrant.
[Main Functions] Resolving the muscle layer and releasing the exterior, stimulating appetite and promoting digestion.
[Preparation] Remove roots, chop into pieces, and use.
[Therapeutic Indications] (Effects) The *Tujing* records: Stems and leaves enter the Heart Meridian, benefit the Spleen and Stomach, and are especially beneficial when cooked with rice. Using only the stems, removing the nodes, can ventilate and disperse wind-toxins and Ji Jia (abdominal masses associated with chicken consumption). (*Yaoxing Lun* records) Seeds can treat upper Qi rebellion, coughing and wheezing, cold Qi, and damp-wind stagnation in the waist and legs; grinding them into juice and cooking porridge is effective. (*Ri Hua Zi Bencao* records) Can relieve epigastric fullness, stop cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea with muscle cramps, treat all types of cold Qi and foot Qi (gout/beriberi), and unblock the Large and Small Intestines. ○ Seeds regulate the Middle Jiao, benefit the Five Zang organs, direct Qi downward, stop cholera-like vomiting and regurgitation, promote urination and defecation, break up accumulations (Zheng Jie), dissipate five diaphragm obstructions, stop cough, moisten the Lungs and Heart, and resolve phlegm Qi.
