*Bi Sai Zhi* (Records of the Frontier) records: Produced in places such as Wuguo City outside Liaodong Pass. This *Zhu* herb initially grows underground without stems or leaves, mostly found in dark places, with the highest concentration north of the city. When the weather is clear and mild, it can be obtained by digging into the ground; its color resembles that of withered willow branches, size similar to chopsticks, spreading for dozens of steps, growing in a curved manner. Locals suffering from illness have no medicine available; those who are sick can boil this *Zhu* herb into a decoction and take it orally, resulting in spontaneous recovery. It can also be used to predict the prognosis of patients: if the decoction floats after boiling several times, the illness will heal; if it is half-floating and half-sinking, the illness will persist chronically. Locals use this for verification.
Treats all diseases caused by wind-cold and food stagnation.
Xian Gu Lian (Immortal Maiden Coptis) / Tian Mu Lian (Heavenly Mother Coptis) [Appendix]
Also known as *Tu Lian* (Earth Coptis), found in the mountains of Ba Jin Hua and Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. Those from Chu Zhou are named *Chu Lian*. The superior quality is characterized by larger size and lighter fuzz. Its nature is colder than *Chuan Lian* (Coptis chinensis).
People in the North purchase it for use as veterinary medicine for horses.
*Bai Cao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs) records: *Tu Huang Lian* sprouts in February; its roots and leaves are indistinguishable from *Yang Ti Da Huang* (Rheum palmatum), except for being smaller. In March, it sends up stems about one chi high. The flowers are fine and spike-like. The fruit turns from green to red initially. Seeds are hidden within the ridges. It withers after the Summer Solstice. Those from Zhejiang are named *Ci Lian*; those from Xuan Cheng, Ningguo Prefecture, Anhui, are thick and fat, named *Xuan Huang Lian*.
Its nature is cold but not stagnant, making it most excellent for use in plasters and pills.
Ji Family Hereditary Prescription: For bloody dysentery, use *Xuan Lian* powdered, mixed with egg white to form cakes, roasted over charcoal until thoroughly red, covered tightly to prevent gas escape, cooled, then finely ground. Take on an empty stomach.
Produced in Xian Ju County, Taizhou. Locals pass down the legend that Cai Jing lived here during the Wu and Wei periods, hence the county's name. Wang Fang Ping once descended with Ma Gu to his residence; the ruins still exist today. The local *Huang Lian* is as thick as a chicken's spur, all in a bead-like chain shape, skin color greenish-yellow, smooth and hairless, taste extremely bitter and cold. When broken, smoke appears; those with a color like red gold are superior. It treats fire syndromes more rapidly than Sichuan-produced varieties and is indispensable as veterinary medicine for horses.
Produced in Tiantai. Skin color is mouse-brown, slightly prickly. Taste is bitter; when held in the mouth for a long time, it has a clear and sweet aftertaste.
Strongly drains Heart Fire. Its nature is cold and dispersing, thus particularly effective in treating eye disorders.
