*Pharmacological Properties Examination* records: Qingke (highland barley) and Huangke, with grains exposed on the outside, are widely cultivated in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Yunnan, and Guizhou. The taste is salty; it can be used to brew wine lees and distill liquor. Its shape resembles *Hordeum vulgare* (common barley), with thin skin and crisp flour. It directs Qi downward and expands the middle jiao, strengthens tendons and bones, and increases strength. Its nature is neutral and cool; it dispels dampness, induces sweating, and stops diarrhea. Excessive consumption causes hair loss and damages complexion.
This refers to the thick foam that rises when porridge is boiling vigorously in a pot, slippery like paste or oil. Its efficacy can solidify the interstices (pores), and it is most effective for making the body plump. Those who use large pots to cook more than five sheng of rice produce superior rice oil. Quan Danruo, a physician from Yue, stated: "Black and thin individuals who consume this will become fat and fair within one hundred days, because its yin-nourishing power surpasses that of Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang)." Extracting one bowl daily and taking it plain is best. If modern people extract juice by squeezing cooked porridge as rice oil, the efficacy is inevitably weak.
The taste is sweet, and the nature is neutral. It nourishes yin and increases strength, plumps the five zang organs and nine orifices, promotes urination, and treats strangury.
For infertility due to clear and thin semen, *Zilin's Single Prescriptions*: Take the rice foam floating on the surface of boiling rice porridge in a rolling pot, add a small amount of refined salt, and take on an empty stomach.
Aged New Year Cake
Also known as Golden Powder, it is the scorched residue at the bottom of the rice cooking pot. Using the thick, scorched rice from temples where much rice is cooked is good for medicinal use.
The taste is bitter and sweet, and the nature is neutral. It tonifies Qi and regulates the spleen, aids digestion, and stops diarrhea; it is used in Eight-Treasure Powder.
