[Correction] Transferred from the Wood section to this section.
[Names] Mu Xie (Wood Crab).
Su Song stated: Its seeds resemble turtles and crabs in shape, hence the name.
[Collected Explanations] Su Song stated: It grows in Langzhou and southern regions. The fruits are harvested in the seventh and eighth lunar months.
Kou Zongshi stated: It is now found in various prefectures of Hubei and Hunan, as well as Hangzhou, Yuezhou, Quanzhou, and Yuezhou. Seedlings sprout in spring and grow as vines. The leaves have five lobes, resembling those of Dioscorea opposita (Shanyao), with a green and glossy surface. Yellow flowers bloom in April. Fruits set in June, resembling Trichosanthes kirilowii (Gualou) but much larger; they are green when unripe and turn reddish-yellow when ripe, with soft spines on the flesh. Each fruit contains thirty to forty seeds, which are flat and turtle-shaped. They are harvested in August and September. People in Lingnan use the young fruits and seedlings as vegetables after steaming.
Kou Zongshi stated: The vine of Guizhi Zi (Mumiguo) withers annually, but the roots survive and sprout anew in spring. The leaves resemble grape leaves. Among the fruits, those pointed at one end are considered male. When planting, male and female plants must be paired and tied firmly with hemp rope. Once growing, the male plant should be removed for the female to bear fruit.
Li Shizhen stated: The seeds of Guizhi Zi are flat and as large as Go stones. The kernels are bluish-green; those used for medicine are defatted.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Sweet, warm, non-toxic. Li Shizhen stated: Bitter, slightly sweet, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Fractures and injuries, reducing nodular swelling and malignant sores, promoting tissue regeneration, relieving lower back pain, treating acne, breast abscesses in women, and anal swelling and pain (Kaibao Bencao). Rubbed with vinegar externally to reduce swelling and toxicity (Jiayou Bencao). Treating infantile malnutrition with abdominal masses, facilitating bowel movements in dysentery, and treating hemorrhoids, tumors, and scrofula (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Ma Zhi stated: According to Liu Ji's Feixue Lu, Guizhi Zi is toxic and should not be eaten. In the past, someone in Jimen had two sons who developed abdominal masses due to excessive consumption. His father obtained a prescription where Guizhi Zi was boiled with pork meat for them to eat. The younger son died that night, and the elder son died the next day. This prescription is also recorded in the medical books of his friend Ma Wencheng. Therefore, this warning is written.
Li Shizhen stated: Southerners consume its seedlings and young fruits without harm, so the toxicity should not be this severe. Perhaps it is incompatible with pork or contraindicated with other foods; one cannot solely blame Guizhi Zi.
[Attached Prescriptions] One old prescription, nineteen new prescriptions.
Alcoholic jaundice with spleen yellowing: Grind Guizhi Zi with vinegar and drink one or two cups. Effect is seen upon diarrhea (Liu Changchun, Jiji Fang).
Hong Kong foot (podagra) swelling and pain: Take Guizhi Zi kernels, split each into two halves, stir-fry with bran, chop finely, and stir-fry again until all oil is removed. For every liang, add half a liang of Rougui (Cinnamon Bark), grind into powder. Take 2 qian with hot wine to induce drunkenness and sweating for cure. This formula was transmitted by Mengmi (Yonglei Fang).
[Note: Subject missing in original text] Si liang (peeled), Gansui (Kansui Root) half a liang, ground into powder. Use one pig kidney, remove the membrane and slice it. Place 4 qian of the medicine inside, wrap in wet paper, and bake until cooked. Take on an empty stomach with rice water. Extend both legs after taking the medicine. If bowel movement occurs, eating white porridge for two to three days is ideal (Yang Gong, Yifang Jiangyao).
Yin hernia with unilateral descent, severe pain: Grind one Guizhi Zi with vinegar, mix with Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) and Furong (Hibiscus) powder, and apply externally. Pain stops immediately (Shouyu Shenfang).
Chronic malaria with pathogen root: Equal parts of Guizhi Zi and Chuan Shan Jia (Pangolin Scales, prepared), ground into powder. Take 3 qian on an empty stomach with warm wine (Yifang Jiangyao).
Abdominal masses: Five liang of Guizhi Zi kernels, two pig kidneys sliced open to insert the kernels, tied securely, baked until cooked, then mashed together. Add 3 qian of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) powder, mix with steamed dough pills sized like mung beans. Take 30 pills with plain water (Yifang Jicheng).
Pediatric malnutrition: Equal parts of Guizhi Zi kernels and Shijunzi (Quinine Fruit), pounded into paste, formed into pills the size of mustard seeds with rice water. Take 5 fen with rice water, twice daily (Sun Tianren, Jixiao Fang).
Malnutrition causing blurred vision: Use 2 qian of Guizhi Zi kernels and 1 qian of Huhuanglian (Picrorhiza Rhizome), grind into powder, form pills the size of longan seeds with rice paste. Steam inside an egg and consume with the egg (Same source). Retracted eyelashes due to wind invading the Spleen meridian, causing itching and rubbing, leading to redness and inward growth over time. Pound Guizhi Zi kernels into a paste, wrap in silk cloth as a strip. Insert into the right nostril if the left eye is affected, or into the left nostril if the right eye is affected. The eyelashes will naturally separate up and down. Follow with Cicada Slough medication for best results (Sun Tianren, Jixiao Fang).
Chronic cough due to Lung deficiency: One liang each of Guizhi Zi and Kuandonghua (Farfara Flower), ground into powder. Burn 3 qian and inhale the smoke. Spit out saliva after a while, moisten throat with tea. Repeat five or six times, then take Lung-tonifying medicine. Another prescription: One Guizhi Zi and 1 qian of Xionghuang (Realgar) (Shengji Lu).
Pediatric [Condition]: Three or four large Guizhi Zi, grind with water and drink. Press down with ice cream to induce vomiting of phlegm. Effective after three doses for severe cases (Zhaixuan Fang).
Uncontrollable watery diarrhea: Five Guizhi Zi kernels, five Mother Cloves (Mu Dingxiang), and 1 fen of She Xiang (Musk), ground into powder. Mix with rice water to make a paste, apply to the umbilicus, and cover with an external plaster.
Dysentery with inability to eat: Six Guizhi Zi kernels pounded into paste, divided into two portions. Take one wheat-baked cake, cut in half. Make a hole in half the cake, place the medicine inside, and cover the patient's umbilicus while hot. Replace with another half-hot cake after one hour. Dysentery stops, and appetite returns (Shao Zhenren, Jingyan Fang).
Intestinal wind with bloody stool: Char Guizhi Zi using mulberry wood until carbonized, cool and grind into powder. Take 1 qian with stir-fried scallions and white wine on an empty stomach. Named Wu Jin San (Puji Fang).
Anal hemorrhoid pain: Sun Yonghe's Mibao Fang: Use three Guizhi Zi kernels, pound into mud in a mortar, add one bowl of boiling water, fumigate first then wash with the hot liquid. Apply three times daily, and smear a small amount externally. Binhu Jijian Fang: Use fresh Guizhi Zi kernels, five male and five female, pound finely into seven pills, keep covered in a bowl in a humid place to prevent drying. Dissolve one pill in saliva and apply to the hemorrhoid. Pain stops immediately, and the pill resolves overnight. Monk Cai from Tiefo Temple in Jiangxia suffered unbearable pain from this condition and was cured by this method. It was effective on several others.
Scrofula lasting years: Two Guizhi Zi kernels, defatted and ground, mixed with egg white, placed in a bottle, and steamed in a steamer. Eat after meals, once daily. Effective within half a month.
Pediatric erysipelas: Grind Guizhi Zi kernels into mud, mix with vinegar, and apply. Apply three to five times daily for effectiveness (Waike Jingyi).
Sudden ear heat and swelling: One liang of Guizhi Zi kernels, half a liang each of Chi Xiaodou (Adzuki Bean) and Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), ground into powder. Mix with a little raw sesame oil and apply externally (Shenghui Fang).
Wind-induced tooth swelling and pain: Grind Guizhi Zi kernels with vinegar and apply externally (Puji Fang).
