(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Collected Explanations] Su Gong stated: Taohua Shi (Peach Blossom Stone) is produced in Zhongshan County, Shenzhou. It resembles Chishizhi (Red Kaolin), but the one that does not stick to the tongue when licked is this stone.
Kou Zongshi stated: Its shape also resembles Zi Shiying (Fluorite). Its color is like peach blossoms, glossy and smooth, heavy in texture, and visually appealing.
Su Song stated: It is currently found in Xinzhou. The lumps resemble Chishizhi (Red Kaolin) and Zi Shiying (Fluorite). There is no fixed time for harvesting. Tao Hongjing said: Chishizhi from Yiyang resembles brain tissue, is bright red and lovely. Su Gong refuted this, stating it is Taohua Shi. Long-term ingestion makes one fat. Currently, locals use it to treat dysentery. Its efficacy is not far different.
Kou Zongshi stated: Taohua Shi has two types: red and white. One type has a red base with pale white spots resembling peach blossom petals; the other has a pale white base with red spots resembling peach blossom petals. People often carve and grind it into utensils, and rarely consume it internally.
Li Shizhen stated: This is simply Chishizhi (Red Kaolin) or Baishizhi (White Kaolin) that does not stick to the tongue, is hard, and has floral patterns. It is not a separate substance. Therefore, its flavor and efficacy are identical to those of Shizhi (Kaolin).
In the past, Zhang Zhongjing used Chishizhi (Red Kaolin) to treat dysentery under the name Taohua Tang (Peach Blossom Decoction). The Taohua Wan (Peach Blossom Pill) in *Heji Jufang* (Prescriptions of the Bureau of Humanitarian Relief) for treating cold dysentery both refer to this substance.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Cold pus and blood dysentery originating from the Large Intestine. Long-term consumption makes one plump and increases appetite (*Tang Bencao*).
(From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Names] Lu Xiansheng (Master of the Furnace).
Tusuzhenjun stated: This substance, when refined, becomes a miraculous medicine. The Three Pure Ones of the Nine Heavens all revere it as "Lu Xiansheng" (Master of the Furnace); it is not an ordinary drug.
Li Shizhen stated: Because it is valued in furnace fire refining and its taste is sweet, it is named accordingly.
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: Lugan Shi (Calamine) is found wherever mines and smelters exist. It is most abundant in Sichuan-Shu and Eastern Hunan, but those from Taiyuan, Zezhou, Yangcheng, Gaoping, Lingqiu, Rongxian, and Yunnan are superior. It is the "seedling" (ore vein) of gold and silver. The lumps vary in size, resembling sheep's brain, loose like Shizhi (Kaolin), and sticky to the tongue. Those from gold mines are slightly yellow and are of the highest quality. Those from silver mines are white, or may carry green, blue-green, or pink hues. When combined with Red Copper (Chutong), it turns yellow. Modern brass is created by refining this substance. *Zaohua Zhinan* states: Lugan Shi absorbs the qi of gold and silver and takes thirty years to form. Soaking in foul substances or boiling with arsenic allows for alchemical refinement, comparable to Sanhuang (Three Yellows). Cui Fang's *Waidan Bencao* states: Using one jin of copper and one jin of Lugan Shi, after refining, yields one and a half jin of pseudo-gold. Is this not extracted from stone? True gold originates from Persia, looks like gold, turns red when burned but not black.
[Preparation] Li Shizhen stated: Whenever using Lugan Shi (Calamine), heat it red over charcoal fire, quench it seven times in urine from a healthy boy, wash clean with water, grind into powder, process by water flotation, and dry for use.
[Flavor and Toxicity] Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Stops bleeding, reduces swelling and toxins, promotes flesh regeneration, clears the eyes, removes nebulae, reduces redness, dries dampness, and heals ulcers. Combined with Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) for eye drops, it treats all diseases of the eye (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Lugan Shi (Calamine) enters the Yangming Meridian. Having absorbed the qi of gold and silver, it is a key herb for treating eye diseases. Li Shizhen frequently used Lugan Shi (quenching vinegar), Haopiaoxiao (Cuttlebone), and Pengsha (Borax), each one liang, ground into fine powder, to drop into various eye conditions, which is very effective. Adding five qian of Zhusha (Cinnabar) prevents the mixture from being sticky.
[Attached Prescriptions] Fifteen new prescriptions.
Sudden redness and swelling of the eyes: Lugan Shi (quenched with fire, vinegar, and urine) and Fenghua Xiao (Weathered Niter) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Dissolve a grain-sized amount in fresh water and apply to the eye (*Yuyao Yuanfang*).

Another method: One qian of Lugan Shi (quenched with vinegar) and one qian of Penxiao (Saltpeter). Grind into powder. Wash with hot water infusion. Eye ailments: Shilian Guangming San (Stone-Connecting Brightness Powder): Treats all syndromes of the Five Wheels and Eight Corridors of the eye with divine efficacy. Half a jin of Lugan Shi (Calamine), selecting pieces resembling sheep's brain or duck head color. Mix with ten dou of mulberry branch ash, heat until red, and grind. Add four liang of Yazhou Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), sliced, and soak the stone in decocted water. Clarify and collect the powder, then dry. Process two ding of Qianfen (Lead Carbonate) by soaking in Erlian water and frying. Grind Xionghuang (Realgar) into powder. For each application, mix three fen of Gan Shi (Lugan Shi) and Qian Fen, one fen of Xionghuang, and half a fen of Pianbrain. Grind evenly and apply to the eye; very effective (Zhang's Prescription).
Dim and blurry vision: Lugan Shi (quenched with fire, vinegar, and urine seven times), Daizheshi (Hematite) (quenched with fire, vinegar seven times), and Huangdan (Minium) (water-flown) each four liang. Grind into powder. Take half a jin of Baisha Mi (White Sand Honey), refine in a copper pot to remove white foam, add five or six bowls of clear water, bring to a boil, add the medicine, and simmer on medium-low heat until reduced to one bowl. It should not disperse when dropped into water. Filter through layered paper and store in porcelain. Apply frequently daily (*Weisheng Yijian Fang*).
Rotten margin wind-eye (blepharitis): Liu Changchun's prescription: Treats wind-eye tearing and rotten margins. Four liang of white Lugan Shi (Calamine), quenched seven times with fire, vinegar, and urine. Place on the ground for three days to eliminate toxicity, then grind finely. After washing the eyes with pepper soup, apply three to four times before sleep. Wash off with tea soup early the next morning; very effective. Another method: One jin of Lugan Shi (quenched with vinegar), four liang of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome). Decoct water, quench seven times, grind into powder, add Pianbrain (Borneolum Syntheticum). Apply to the eyes. *Xuanming Ophthalmology Prescription*: Use one qian each of Lugan Shi (Calamine) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and three fen of Haopiaoxiao (Cuttlebone). Grind into powder. Add a small amount of Pianbrain (Borneolum Syntheticum) and Shexiang (Musk), store, and apply. *Weisheng Yijian Fang*: Use two liang of Lugan Shi (Calamine). Decoct one liang of Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) in water, add half a zhan of boy's urine, and reduce again. Add one liang of Puxiao (Mirabilite) and reduce to a paste. Quench the stone with fire and vinegar seven times, wash clean, grind into powder, mix evenly with one liang of Mitoseng (Litharge) powder, store, and apply.
Ear discharge: Two qian each of Lugan Shi (Calamine) and Fanshi (Alum), half a qian of Yanzhi (Vermilion), and a little Shexiang (Musk). Grind into powder and insufflate into the clean ear canal (*Puji Fang*).
Loose teeth and recession: Lugan Shi (Calamine) (quenched with vinegar) and Hanshui Shi (Calcitum) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Rub a small amount on the teeth each time. Avoid using toothbrushes; over time, teeth will naturally become tight (*Jixuan Fang*).
Non-healing fistulas: (Processed with boy's urine) Lugan Shi (Calamine) and Muli Fen (Oyster Shell Powder). Pack externally, and internally administer tonifying medicines (*Zabing Zhili*).
Chancre and yin sores: One liang of Lugan Shi (Calamine) (quenched five times with fire and vinegar), three qian of Hai'ercha (Child's Tea). Grind into powder. Mix with sesame oil and apply topically; heals immediately (Shaman Tongmiao Shaozhen's Prescription).
Damp and itchy groin: One fen of Lugan Shi (Calamine) and half a fen of genuine Bangfen (Concha Tridacnae). Grind into powder and dust on the affected area (*Zhizhi Fang*).
