【释名】犬（《说文》）、地羊。
时珍曰∶狗，叩也。吠声有节，如叩物也。或云为物苟且，故谓之狗，韩非云“蝇营狗
苟”是矣。卷尾有悬蹄者为犬，犬字象形，故孔子曰∶视犬字如画狗。齐人名地羊。俗又讳
之以龙，称狗有乌龙、白龙之号。许氏《说文》云∶多毛曰 ，长喙曰猃（音敛），短喙曰
（音歇），去势曰猗，高四尺曰 ，狂犬曰 （音折）。生一子曰 曰
狮，三子曰 。
【集解】时珍曰∶狗类甚多，其用有三∶田犬长喙善猎，吠犬短喙善守，食犬体肥供馔。
凡本草所用，皆食犬也。犬以三月而生，在畜属木，在卦属艮，在禽应娄星。豺见之跪，虎
食之醉，犬食番木鳖则死，物性制伏如此。又辽东有鹰背狗，乃鹰产三卵，一鹰一雕一犬也。
以禽乳兽，古所未闻。详见雕条。又有老木之精，状如黑狗而无尾，名曰彭侯，可以烹食。
无情化有情，精灵之变也。
【气味】咸、酸，温，无毒。反商陆，畏杏仁。同蒜食，损人。同菱食，生癫。
思邈曰∶白犬合海 食，必得恶病。
时珍曰∶ ，小鱼也。道家以犬为地厌，不食之。凡犬不可炙食，令人消渴。妊妇食之，
令子无声。热病后食之，杀人。服食人忌食。九月勿食犬，伤神。瘦犬有病， 犬发狂，自
死犬有毒，悬蹄犬伤人，赤股而躁者气臊，犬目赤者，并不可食。
【主治】安五脏，补绝伤，轻身益气（《别录》）。宜肾（思邈）。补胃气，壮阳道，暖腰
膝，益气力（《日华》）。补五劳七伤，益阳事，补血脉，浓肠胃，实下焦，填精髓，和五味
煮，空心食之。凡食犬若去血，则力少不益人（孟诜）。
【发明】弘景曰∶白狗、乌狗入药用。黄狗肉大补虚劳，牡者尤胜。
大明曰∶黄犬大补益人，余色微补。古言薯蓣凉而能补，犬肉暖而不补。虽有此言，服
终有益。但因食秽，不食者众。
震亨曰∶世言犬能治劳损阳虚之疾，然人病多是阴虚。若阳果虚，其死甚易，亦安能措
手哉？
时珍曰∶脾胃属土，喜暖恶寒。犬性温暖，能治脾胃虚寒之疾。脾胃温和，而腰肾受荫
矣。若素常气壮多火之人，则宜忌之。丹溪独指阴虚立
惫诸虚证，有黄犬肉丸，药多不载。
【附方】旧三，新六。
戊戌酒∶大补元气。用黄犬肉一只，煮一伏时，捣如泥，和汁拌炊糯米三斗，入曲如常
酿酒。候熟，每旦空心饮之。（《养老》方）
戊戌丸∶治男子、妇人一应诸虚不足，骨蒸潮热等证。用黄童子狗一只，去皮毛肠肚同
外肾，于砂锅内用酒醋八分，水二升，入地骨皮一斤，前胡、黄 、肉苁蓉各四两，同煮一
日。去药，再煮一夜。去骨，再煮肉如泥，擂滤。入当归末四两，莲肉、苍术末各一斤，浓
朴、橘皮末十两，甘草末八两，和杵千下，丸梧桐子大。每空

虚寒疟疾∶黄狗肉煮 。入五味，食之。
气水鼓胀∶狗肉一斤切，和米煮粥，空腹食之。（《心镜》）

蹄肉
【气味】酸，平。
【主治】煮汁饮之，能下乳汁（《别录》）。
血（白狗者良。）
【气味】咸，温，无毒。
弘景曰∶白狗血和白鸡肉、乌鸡肉、白鹅肝、白羊肉、蒲子羹等食，皆病患。
时珍曰∶黑犬血灌蟹烧之，集鼠。
【主治】白狗血∶治癫疾发作。乌狗血∶治产难横生，血上抢心，和酒服之（《别录》）。
补安五脏（《日华》）。热饮，治虚劳吐血，又解射罔毒。点眼，治痘疮入目。又治伤寒热病
发狂见鬼及鬼击病，辟诸邪魅（时珍）。
【发明】时珍曰∶术家以犬为地厌，能禳辟一切邪魅妖术。按∶《史记》云∶秦时杀狗
磔四门以御灾，风俗通义云今人杀白犬血题门以辟不祥，则自古已然
琅琊有女子，右股病疮，痒而不痛，愈而复作。佗取稻糖色犬一只系马，马走五十里，乃断
头向痒处合之。须臾一蛇在皮中动，以钩引出，长三尺许，七日而愈。此亦怪证，取狗之血
腥，以引其虫耳。
【附方】旧三，新三。
热病发狂∶伤寒、时气、温病六七日，热极发狂，见鬼欲走。取白狗从背破取血，乘热
摊胸上，冷乃去之。此治垂死者亦活。无白犬，但纯色者亦可。（《肘
鬼击之病∶胁腹绞痛，或即吐血、衄血、下血，一名鬼排。白犬头取热血一升，饮之。

【主治】忧恚气，除邪（《别录》）。治风痹鼻衄，及下部疮，狂犬咬（《日华》）。
肾
【气味】平，微毒。
时珍曰∶《内则》“食犬去肾”，为不利人也。
【主治】妇人产后肾劳如疟者。妇人体热用猪肾，体冷用犬肾（藏器）。
肝
时珍曰∶按沈周《杂记》云∶狗肝色如泥土，臭味亦然。故人夜行土上则肝气动，盖
相感也。又张华《物类志》云∶以狗肝和土泥灶，令妇外家孝顺。则狗肝应土之说相符矣。
【主治】肝同心捣，涂狂犬咬。又治香港脚攻心，作生，以姜、醋进之，取泄。先泄者勿
用（藏器）。
【附方】旧一，新一。
下痢腹痛∶狗肝一具切，入米一升煮粥，合五味食。（《心镜》）
心风发狂∶黄石散∶用狗肝一具批开，以黄丹、硝石各一钱半，研匀擦在肝内，用麻缚
定，水一升煮熟。细嚼，以本汁送下。（《杨氏家藏》）
胆（青犬、白犬者良）
【气味】苦，平，有小毒。
曰∶ 鱼插树，立便干枯；狗胆涂之，却还荣盛。
【主治】明目（《本经》。鼎曰∶上伏日采胆，酒服之）。敷痂疡恶疮（《别录》）。疗鼻

服半个，瘀血尽下（时珍）。治刀箭疮（《日华》）。去肠中脓水。又和通
隐形（孟诜）。
【发明】慎微曰∶按《魏志》云∶河内太守刘勋女病左膝疮痒。华佗视之，用绳系犬后
足不得行，断犬腹取胆向疮口，须臾有虫若蛇从疮上出，长三尺，病愈也。

眼赤涩痒∶犬胆汁注目中，效。（《圣惠》）
肝虚目暗∶白犬胆一枚，萤火虫二七枚，阴干为末，点之。（《圣惠》）
目中脓水∶上伏日采犬胆，酒服之。（《圣济总录》）
耳出脓∶用狗胆一枚，枯矾一钱，调匀。绵裹塞耳内，三四次即瘥。（《奇效良方》）
拔白换黑∶狗胆汁涂之。（《千金》）
血气撮痛不可忍者∶用黑狗胆一个（半干半湿）剜开，以篦子排丸绿豆大，蛤粉滚过。每服
五丸，以烧生铁淬酒送下，痛立止。（《经验方》）
反胃吐食∶不拘丈夫妇人老少，远年近日。用五灵脂末，黄狗胆汁和，丸龙眼大。每服
一丸，好酒半盏磨化服。不过三服，即效。（《本事》）
痞块疳积∶五灵脂（炒烟尽）、真阿魏（去砂研）等分，用黄雄狗胆汁和，丸黍米大。
空心津咽三十丸。忌羊肉、醋、面。（《简便》）
赤白下痢∶腊月狗胆一百枚，每枚入黑豆充满，麝香少许。每服一枚，赤以甘草、白以
干姜汤送下。（《奇效良方》）
牡狗阴茎
【释名】狗精。六月上伏日取，阴干百日（《别录》）。
【气味】咸，平，无毒。
思邈曰∶酸。
【主治】伤中，阴痿不起，令强热大，生子，除女子带下十二疾（《本经》）。治绝阳及
妇人阴 （《日华》）。补精髓（孟诜）。
阴卵
【主治】妇人十二疾，烧灰服（苏恭）。
皮
【主治】腰痛，炙热黄狗皮裹之，频用取瘥。烧灰，治诸风（时珍）。
【发明】时珍曰∶《淮南万毕术》云∶黑犬皮毛烧灰扬之，止天风。则治风之义，有取
乎此也。
毛
【主治】产难（苏恭）。颈下毛∶主小儿夜啼，绛囊
钱，治邪疟。尾∶烧灰，敷犬伤（时珍）。

汤火伤疮∶狗毛细翦，以烊胶和毛敷之。痂落即瘥。（《梅师》）
齿
【气味】平，微毒。
【主治】癫痫寒热，猝风痱，伏日取之（《别录》）。磨汁，治犬痫。烧研醋和，敷发背
及马鞍疮。同人齿烧灰汤服，治痘疮倒陷，有效（时珍）。
头骨（黄狗者良）。
【气味】甘、酸，平，无毒。
【主治】金疮止血（《别录》）。烧灰，治久痢、劳痢。和干姜、莨菪炒见烟，为丸，空
心白饮服十丸，极效（甄权）。
下（时珍）。颔骨∶主小儿诸痫、诸 ，烧灰酒服（苏恭）。

小儿久痢∶狗头烧灰，白汤服。（《千金》）
小儿解颅∶黄狗头骨炙为末，鸡子白和，涂之。（《直指》）
赤白久痢∶腊月狗头骨一两半（烧灰），紫笋茶（末）一两，为末。每服二钱，米饮下。

赤白带下不止者∶狗头烧灰，为末。每酒服一钱，日三服。（《圣惠》）

附骨疽疮∶狗头骨烧烟，日熏之。（《圣惠》）
痈疽疖毒∶狗头骨灰、芸苔子等分，为末，醋和敷之。（《千金》）
恶疮不愈∶狗头骨灰同黄丹末等分，敷之。（《寿域方》）
长肉生肌∶老狗头脑骨（瓦炒）二两，桑白皮一两，当归二钱半。为末。麻油调敷。（《直

鼻中息肉∶狗头灰方寸匕，苦丁香半钱，研末吹之，即化为水。或同 砂少许，尤妙。

产后烦懑不食者∶白犬骨烧研，水服方寸匕。（《千金翼》）
桃李哽咽∶狗骨煮汤，摩头上。（《子母秘录》）
屎（白狗者良）
【气味】热，有小毒。《丹
【主治】疔疮。水绞汁服，治诸毒不可入口者（苏恭）。瘭疽彻骨痒者，烧灰涂疮，勿
令
病者知。又和腊猪脂，敷 疮肿毒，疔肿出根（藏器）。烧灰
止心腹痛，解一切毒（时珍）。
【发明】时珍曰∶狗屎所治诸病，皆取其解毒之功耳。

小儿霍乱猝起者∶用白狗屎一丸，绞汁服之。
心痛欲死∶狗屎炒研，酒服二钱，神效。
劳疟瘴疟久不愈∶用白狗粪烧灰，发前冷水服二钱。（《圣
月水不调∶妇人产后，月水往来，乍多乍少。白狗粪烧末，酒服方寸匕，日三服。（《千

三服，三日使尽，症即便出也。（《外台》）
漏脯中毒∶犬屎烧末，酒服方寸匕。（《梅师》）

【主治】噎膈风病，痘疮倒陷，能解毒也（时珍）。

噎膈不食∶黄犬干饿数日，用生粟或米干饲之。俟其下粪，淘洗米粟令净，煮粥，入薤
白一
【主治功效】解除各种毒虫咬伤及鬼魅魇镇之症。饮用一碗，不要让病人知道。另外用来清洗各种疮疡，效果很好（李时珍）。
猪窝里的草
【主治功效】治疗小儿夜间啼哭，秘密地放在席子下面，不要让母亲知道（《日华本草》）。
绑猪的绳子
【主治功效】治疗小儿受惊啼哭，发作没有规律，用腊月制作的绳子烧成灰，用水送服少许（陈藏器）。

【名称解释】犬（《说文解字》）、地羊。
李时珍说：狗，是“叩”的意思。吠叫声有节奏，像敲击物体一样。有人说因为这种动物行为苟且，所以叫狗，韩非子说的“蝇营狗苟”就是这个意思。尾巴卷曲且有悬蹄的叫犬，“犬”字是象形字，所以孔子说：“看‘犬’字就像画了一只狗。”齐地的人叫它地羊。民间又忌讳直接称狗为龙，称狗有乌龙、白龙的称号。许慎的《说文解字》说：多毛的叫 ，长嘴的叫猃（音敛），短嘴的叫 （音歇），去势的叫猗，高四尺的叫 ，疯狗叫 （音折）。生一只幼崽叫 叫狮，生三只叫 。
【集解考证】李时珍说：狗的品种很多，用途有三类：田犬嘴长善于狩猎，吠犬嘴短善于守家，食犬身体肥壮供人食用。凡是本草中使用的，都是食犬。狗在三月生产，在五行畜类属木，在八卦属艮，在禽星对应娄星。豺狼见到它下跪，老虎吃了它会醉倒，狗吃了番木鳖就会死，万物本性相互制伏就是这样。还有辽东有一种鹰背狗，是老鹰产下三枚卵，孵出一只鹰、一只雕和一只狗。以禽鸟哺乳兽类，是古代未曾听说过的。详见“雕”条。还有一种老树成的精怪，形状像黑狗但没有尾巴，名叫彭侯，可以烹煮食用。这是无情之物化为有情之物，是精灵的变化。
【气味归经】咸味、酸味，性温，无毒。与商陆相反，畏惧杏仁。同蒜一起吃，损伤人体。同菱角一起吃，会引发癫疾。
孙思邈说：白犬肉合海 鱼一起吃，必定会得恶病。
李时珍说： ，是小鱼。道家认为狗是地厌（地府厌恶之物），不吃它。凡是大狗不可烤着吃，会让人患消渴病。孕妇吃了，会让婴儿失声。热病痊愈后吃了，会致死。服用丹药养生的人忌食。九月不要食狗肉，损伤精神。瘦狗有病， 犬发狂，自死的狗有毒，有悬蹄的狗伤人，大腿赤红且急躁的狗气臊臭，狗眼红的，都不可食用。
【主治功效】安五脏，补绝伤，轻身益气（《名医别录》）。宜于肾（孙思邈）。补胃气，壮阳道，暖腰膝，益气力（《日华本草》）。补五劳七伤，益阳事，补血脉，厚肠胃，实下焦，填精髓，调和五味煮熟，空腹食用。凡是吃狗肉如果去掉血，则效力减少，对人无益（孟诜）。
【发明辨证】陶弘景说：白狗、乌狗入药使用。黄狗肉大补虚劳，公狗尤其胜过。
苏颂（大明）说：黄犬大补益人，其他颜色稍补。古话说薯蓣凉而能补，犬肉暖而不补。虽然有此说法，服用终究有益。但因为食物不洁，很多人不吃。
朱震亨（震亨）说：世人说狗能治疗劳损阳虚的疾病，然而人的病多是阴虚。如果阳气真的虚了，死亡很容易，又怎么能着手治疗呢？
李时珍说：脾胃属土，喜暖恶寒。狗性温暖，能治疗脾胃虚寒的疾病。脾胃温和，腰肾也就受到荫庇了。如果平时气壮多火的人，则应该忌食。丹溪先生独自指出阴虚导致的各种虚弱证候，有黄犬肉丸，药物大多未记载。
【附方】旧方三个，新方六个。
戊戌酒：大补元气。用黄狗肉一只，煮一个时辰，捣成泥，和汁拌蒸糯米三斗，加曲按常法酿酒。等酿熟，每天早晨空腹饮用。（《养老奉亲书》方）
戊戌丸：治疗男子、妇人一切诸虚不足，骨蒸潮热等证。用黄童子狗一只，去皮毛肠肚连同外肾，在砂锅内用酒醋八分，水二升，加入地骨皮一斤，前胡、黄 、肉苁蓉各四两，同煮一天。去掉药渣，再煮一夜。去掉骨头，再煮肉如泥状，研磨过滤。加入当归末四两，莲肉、苍术末各一斤，浓朴、橘皮末十两，甘草末八两，和匀杵捣千下，做成梧桐子大小的丸药。每次空腹……（《秘韫》）
虚寒疟疾：黄狗肉煮……加入五味调料，食用。
气水鼓胀：狗肉一斤切块，和米煮粥，空腹食用。（《心镜》）
浮肿尿涩：肥狗肉五斤熟蒸，空腹食用。（《心镜》）
猝中恶死：剖开白狗胸膛取心，……即活。（《肘后备急方》）
痔漏有虫：《杨氏经验方》：用狗肉煮汁，空腹服用，能引出虫来。危亦林：用熟犬肉蘸浓蓝汁，空腹吃，七天见效。
蹄肉
【气味】酸味，性平。
【主治功效】煮汁饮用，能通乳汁（《名医别录》）。
血（白狗的血好。）
【气味】咸味，性温，无毒。
陶弘景说：白狗血和白鸡肉、乌鸡肉、白鹅肝、白羊肉、蒲子羹等一起吃，都会导致病患。
李时珍说：黑犬血灌入螃蟹中烧制，能聚集老鼠。
【主治功效】白狗血：治疗癫疾发作。乌狗血：治疗难产横生，血上抢心，和酒服用（《名医别录》）。补安五脏（《日华本草》）。热饮，治疗虚劳吐血，又解射罔毒。点眼，治疗痘疮入目。又治伤寒热病发狂见鬼及鬼击病，辟除各种邪魅（李时珍）。
【发明辨证】李时珍说：术数家认为狗是地厌，能禳除辟除一切邪魅妖术。按：《史记》说：秦朝时在四个城门杀狗肢解以御灾祸，《风俗通义》说现在人杀白犬血题写门上来辟除不祥，那么自古以来就是这样了。琅琊有个女子，右腿患病疮，痒而不痛，好了又复发。华佗取一只稻糖色的狗系在马身上，马跑五十里，然后砍头将血合在痒处。一会儿一条蛇在皮中动，用钩子引出，长约三尺，七天痊愈。这也是怪证，取狗的血腥气，来引出其中的虫罢了。
【附方】旧方三个，新方三个。
热病发狂：伤寒、时气、温病六七日，热极发狂，见鬼想跑。取白狗从背部破开取血，趁热摊在胸口上，冷了才去掉。这也能救垂死之人。如果没有白狗，纯色的也可以。（《肘后备急方》）
鬼击之病：胁腹绞痛，或者立即吐血、鼻衄、便血，一名鬼排。取白狗头热血一升，饮用。（《百一方》）
小儿猝然癫痫：刺取白狗血一升，含在口中。并涂在身上。（葛洪方）
猝然得……疮：常生在两脚之间。用白狗血涂抹，立刻痊愈。（《肘后备急方》）
两脚癣疮：白狗血涂抹，立刻痊愈。（《奇效良方》）
疔疮恶肿：取白狗血频繁涂抹，有效。（《肘后方》）

大肠脱肛：狗涎涂抹，自然上去。（《扶寿精方》）
误吞水蛭：用半个蒸饼，绞出狗涎，吃下去。连吃二、三次，异物自然消散。（《德生堂方》）

李时珍说：《礼记·内则》说“食犬去肾”，是因为对人不利的缘故。

肝
李时珍说：按沈周《杂记》说：狗肝颜色像泥土，臭味也是这样。所以人夜里走在土上则肝气动，大概是相互感应的缘故。又张华《物类志》说：用狗肝和土泥灶，让妇人的娘家孝顺。那么狗肝应土的说法相符了。

[Names] Canis familiaris (*Shuowen Jiezi*); Earth Sheep.
Li Shizhen says: "Gou" (dog) relates to "kou" (knock). The barking sound has rhythm, like knocking on an object. Some say it is called dog because the animal acts recklessly, as Han Feizi said, "Flies swarm and dogs act recklessly." Those with curled tails and supernumerary hooves are called "quan"; the character "quan" is pictographic, hence Confucius said, "Looking at the character 'quan' is like seeing a drawing of a dog." People in Qi call it Earth Sheep. Folklore avoids calling it dragon directly, giving names like Black Dragon or White Dragon. Xu Shen's *Shuowen Jiezi* states: Hairy ones are [character]; long-snouted ones are Xian (pronounced lian); short-snouted ones are [character] (pronounced xie); neutered ones are Yi; four chi high are [character]; mad dogs are Zhe (pronounced zhe). One offspring is called Shi; three offspring are [character].
[Collection and Explanation] Li Shizhen says: There are many types of dogs, with three main uses: Field dogs have long snouts and are good for hunting; Watchdogs have short snouts and are good for guarding; Food dogs are fat and used for consumption. All dogs used in materia medica are food dogs. Dogs give birth in the third month; among animals they belong to Wood; among trigrams they belong to Gen; among stars they correspond to Lou. Jackals kneel when they see them; tigers become drunk after eating them; dogs die after eating *Aconitum ferox* seeds. Such is the mutual restraint of natures. There is also an Eagle-Back Dog in Liaodong, born from three eagle eggs hatching one eagle, one hawk, and one dog. Birds nursing mammals was unheard of in ancient times. See the entry for Hawk. There is also an old tree spirit, shaped like a black dog without a tail, named Peng Hou, which can be cooked and eaten. This is the transformation of the lifeless into the living, a change of spirits.
[Properties and Flavors] Salty, sour, warm, non-toxic. Incompatible with *Phytolaccae Radix* (Shanglu); fears *Prunus armeniaca* seed (Xingren). Eating with garlic damages the body. Eating with water caltrop causes epilepsy.
Sun Simiao says: Eating white dog meat with Hai fish will surely cause malignant diseases.
Li Shizhen says: [Character], a small fish. Daoists consider the dog an abomination of the earth and do not eat it. Large dogs should not be roasted, as this causes Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). Pregnant women who eat it may bear silent infants. Those recovering from febrile diseases who eat it may die. Those practicing dietary regimens should avoid it. Do not eat dog meat in the ninth month, as it harms the spirit. Sick thin dogs, rabid dogs, self-dead dogs (toxic), dogs with supernumerary hooves (harmful), dogs with red thighs and irritability (smelly), and dogs with red eyes should all be avoided.
[Indications] Calms the five viscera, supplements severe injuries, lightens the body, and benefits qi (*Mingyi Bielu*). Beneficial to the Kidney (Sun Simiao). Supplements stomach qi, strengthens the sexual function, warms the waist and knees, and boosts physical strength (*Ri Hua Ben Cao*). Supplements five labors and seven injuries, benefits yang functions, nourishes blood vessels, thickens the intestines and stomach, solidifies the lower jiao, fills essence and marrow. Boil harmoniously with five flavors and eat on an empty stomach. If blood is removed from dog meat before cooking, its efficacy is reduced and it does not benefit people (Meng Shen).
[Innovation and Analysis] Tao Hongjing says: White and black dogs are used in medicine. Yellow dog meat greatly supplements deficiency and exhaustion, especially males.
Su Song (Da Ming) says: Yellow dogs greatly benefit humans; other colors have slight benefits. Ancient texts say *Dioscorea* is cool but nourishing, while dog meat is warm but not nourishing. Although this saying exists, taking it is ultimately beneficial. However, due to uncleanliness, many do not eat it.
Zhu Zhenheng says: The world says dogs can treat deficiency-cold diseases caused by labor and damage, but most human illnesses are yin deficiency. If yang were truly deficient, death would be imminent, making treatment difficult.
Li Shizhen says: The Spleen and Stomach belong to Earth, preferring warmth and disliking cold. Dog nature is warm, capable of treating Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold. When the Spleen-Stomach is mild and warm, the waist and Kidneys receive its influence. Those with robust qi and excessive fire should avoid it. Danxi focused solely on yin deficiency causing various weakness syndromes; there is a Yellow Dog Meat Pill, but the ingredients are mostly not recorded.

Wuxu Wine: Greatly supplements primordial qi. Use one yellow dog meat, boil for one shichen (2 hours), pound into paste, mix with juice and three dou of glutinous rice, add yeast as usual for brewing wine. When ready, drink on an empty stomach every morning. (*Yang Lao Fang*)
Wuxu Pill: Treats men and women with all kinds of deficiency insufficiency, bone-steaming tidal fever, etc. Use one yellow puppy, remove skin, hair, intestines, and stomach along with external kidneys. Place in a clay pot with 8 fen of wine/vinegar and 2 sheng of water, add 1 jin of *Lycii Cortex* (Digupi), 4 liang each of *Peucedani Radix* (Qianhu), *Cynomorii Herba* (Roucongrou). Boil for one day. Remove herbs, boil again for one night. Remove bones, boil meat until paste-like, grind and filter. Add 4 liang *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* powder, 1 jin each of Lotus Seed and *Atractylodis Rhizoma* (Cangzhu) powder, 10 liang each of *Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex* (Houpo) and *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium* (Chenpi) powder, 8 liang *Glycyrrhizae Radix* (Gancao) powder. Mix and pound 1,000 times, form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take on an empty stomach... (*Mi Yun*)

[Indications] White dog blood: Treats epilepsy attacks. Black dog blood: Treats dystocia with transverse presentation, blood rushing to the heart; mix with wine and take (*Mingyi Bielu*). Nourishes and calms the five viscera (*Ri Hua Ben Cao*). Drink hot to treat deficiency-wasting hematemesis; resolves *Gelsemium* toxicity. Apply to eyes to treat varicella entering the eye. Also treats mania and hallucinations from cold-heat diseases, and Guiji disease; wards off evil spirits (Li Shizhen).
[Innovation and Analysis] Li Shizhen says: Diviners consider the dog an earth abomination, capable of exorcising all evil spirits and sorcery. According to *Records of the Grand Historian*: In Qin times, dogs were killed and dismembered at the four gates to ward off disasters. *Fengsu Tongyi* says people now kill white dogs, apply blood to doors to ward off misfortune; thus this has existed since ancient times. A woman in Langya had a sore on her right thigh, itchy but painless, recurring after healing. Hua Tuo took a rice-sugar-colored dog, tied it to a horse, rode fifty li, then decapitated it and applied the blood to the itchy area. Soon a snake moved under the skin, drawn out with a hook, about three chi long; healed in seven days. This is a strange case; the dog's bloody smell draws out the worm.

Febrile Disease Mania: After 6-7 days of Shanghan, Shiqi, or Wenbing, extreme heat causes mania, seeing ghosts, wanting to run. Take white dog, break back to get blood, spread hot on chest, remove when cold. This can save dying patients. Any pure color dog works if white is unavailable. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Guiji Disease: Severe twisting pain in hypochondrium/abdomen, or immediate hematemesis, epistaxis, hematochezia, also called Guipai. Take one sheng of hot blood from white dog head, drink. (*Bai Yi Fang*)
Sudden Infant Epilepsy: Prick white dog blood, one sheng, hold in mouth. Smear on body. (Ge Hong's Formula)
Sudden ... Sores: Often appear between legs. Smear with white dog blood, heals immediately. (*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)

Liver
Li Shizhen says: According to Shen Zhou's *Zaji*: Dog liver color resembles soil, and so does the smell. Thus, walking on soil at night activates liver qi, likely due to resonance. Zhang Hua's *Wulei Zhi* says using dog liver to mud a stove makes the wife's family filial. This matches the theory that dog liver corresponds to Earth.
[Indications] Pound liver with heart, apply to dog bites. Treats Hong Kong foot attacking the heart; eat raw with ginger and vinegar to induce purging. Do not use if purging occurs first (Chen Cangqi).

Hua Tuo treated it by tying the dog's hind legs so it couldn't walk, cutting open abdomen to take gall, applying to sore. Soon a worm like a snake, three chi long, emerged from the sore; cured.
