[Green Bean]
The nature is cold. The flavor is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats erysipelas (Dan Du), vexing heat, wind-rash, drug toxicity triggered by the ingestion of mineral medicines, and Qi rushing upward causing Ben Tun (a condition characterized by a sensation of gas rising from the lower abdomen to the chest). Crush raw green beans, squeeze out the juice, and take it orally; alternatively, it can be boiled and eaten. It reduces swelling, directs Qi downward, suppresses heat, and resolves mineral toxicity. When used, do not remove the skin, as doing so may cause slight Qi stagnation in the body.
Green bean has a cold nature, inheriting the cold water Qi of winter from Heaven, and enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its flavor is sweet and non-toxic, obtaining the central Earth flavor from Earth, and enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Its descending action exceeds its ascending action, belonging to Yin. Erysipelas, vexing heat, and wind-rash all belong to Heart Fire. Green bean enters the Kidney meridian; its cold nature is sufficient to clear Heart Fire, and its sweet flavor can resolve heat toxicity. Therefore, it is indicated for these conditions. Mineral drugs have a hot nature; excessive consumption leads to the activation of heat toxicity. Green bean treats this because its sweet-cold property can resolve heat toxicity. Ben Tun is a disease of the Heart. The Heart receives Fire pathogenic factors and stores them in the Liver; the Liver receives them and stores them in the Kidney. Kidney Qi rises abruptly, resembling a pig running and charging. Green bean treats this because coldness can clear fire, and sweetness can relieve the upward rush. Excessive heat causes swelling; green bean’s cold nature clears heat, thus reducing swelling. Fire nature flares upward; when Qi is hot, it flares upward. Green bean’s cold nature clears heat, thus directing Qi downward. Green bean’s cold nature suppresses heat; its sweet flavor resolves mineral toxicity. The skin is cold in nature, therefore it should not be removed during use. Removing the skin causes slight stagnation due to the loss of the skin's cooling constraint, leaving the sweet nature unbalanced.
Prescription:
Green bean combined with red bean and black bean, mixed with vinegar, applied topically to treat acne and carbuncles. Combined with Rhubarb (Da Huang) and Mint (Bo He), applied topically to treat erysipelas.
[Hyacinth Bean / Lablab Bean]
The nature is slightly warm. The flavor is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily harmonizes the middle Jiao and directs Qi downward.
Lablab bean has a slightly warm nature, inheriting the early Shaoyang Qi of spring from Heaven, entering the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Its flavor is sweet and non-toxic, obtaining the central Earth flavor from Earth, and enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
Both its nature and flavor are ascending, belonging to Yang. "Harmonizing the middle" refers to harmonizing the Spleen and Stomach. Lablab bean’s warm nature enters the Gallbladder meridian; when Gallbladder Qi generates and flourishes, the Qi of the Spleen and Stomaxis becomes unobstructed and circulating. Thus, it is said to harmonize the middle. Sweet flavor enters the Spleen meridian; when Spleen Qi is robust, Qi moves downward. Thus, it directs Qi downward.
Prescription:
Lablab bean combined with Ginseng (Ren Shen), Atractylodes Macrocephala (Bai Zhu), Poria (Bai Fu Ling), Licorice (Gan Cao), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren), Lotus Seed (Lian Rou), Platycodon (Jie Geng), and Amomum (Sha Ren) powder, named Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder).
It treats diarrhea caused by Spleen deficiency with dampness, and pediatric Spleen deficiency syndromes. Combined with Ophiopogon (Mai Dong), Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi), Coptis (Chuan Lian/Huang Lian), and Kudzu Root (Ge Gen), it resolves alcohol toxicity.
