Use 10 jin of Baisha Mi (White Sand Honey), mix with the extracted Dihuang juice and the powders of Renshen and Fuling. Place in porcelain, silver, or earthenware vessels. Seal tightly with multiple layers of oiled wax paper to prevent leakage. Cook in a double boiler using mulberry wood fire for three days and nights. If night cooking is not possible, cook for six days until dusk of Mao hour. Once the time is set, immerse in a well for one Zhou hour (approx. 2 hours) to remove fire toxicity. Seal again with wax paper. After one Zhou hour, return to the pot and boil 20-30 times to remove yin energy. Only then open and scoop out. (*Weisheng Jiabao*) Take two spoons every morning, dissolved in warm wine. If not drinking wine, dissolve in plain water. (*Shizheng Fang*) For those indulging in lust, with pale complexion, forceful yet powerless pulse, and cough, Qiongyu Gao is most effective. (*Liuyao*) [Note: *Xian* adds Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum) and Hupo (Succinum) to this formula, which seems superfluous, though *Jinkui Yi* praises it highly; I dare not follow.] *Jingyue Quanshu*'s Liangyi Gao (Two-Polarity Paste) treats severe depletion of essence and qi, unresponsive to other medicines, or due to excessive purgation damaging true yin. For deficiency in the Yang aspect where qi fails to transform into essence, Can Shu Gao (Ginseng and Atractylodes Paste) is suitable; for deficiency in the Yin aspect where essence fails to transform into qi, nothing is better than this. For those not yet critically ill but feeling chronic yin deficiency, used to regulate primal qi, it is particularly miraculous. Remove Fuling and Fa Jiu from this formula. (Dosages and processing differ, omitted here.)
Qing Huo Run Fei Formulas (See *Gu Zheng* chapter for details). Ziyin Jianghuo Tang (Nourish Yin and Descend Fire Decoction) treats non-interaction between Heart and Kidney, excess above and deficiency below, descending pathogenic fire, and nourishing yin water.
Dihuang (Raw for cooling blood, Prepared for tonifying blood); Chuan Guishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed in wine); Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried in thin wine); Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, removed core); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) - each 1 liang; Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, removed core); Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) - each 5 fen; Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, both steamed in honey-water); Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) - each 6 fen (remove if chronic).
Add two zhong of water and three slices of ginger. Decoct and take. For chronic illness, add Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 5 fen each. For stagnant phlegm, add Gualouren (Trichosanthis Semen) and Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus) 6 fen each. For cough, add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) and Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini) 7 fen each. For nocturnal emission, add Qianshi (Nelumbinis Semen) and Tushilian (Nelumbinis Plumula) 7 fen each. For heat, add Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix) and Digupi (Lycii Cortex) 1 liang each. For hemoptysis, add Qiangengen (Rubiae Radix), Oujiang (Nymphaeae Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Sucus), and Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 1 liang each. For qi deficiency and blood shortage, add Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix) 4 fen each. (*Zhuzheng Bianyi*) [Note: *Mingyi Zazhuo* states: A modern formula treats lust-induced syndrome, presenting early with tidal fever, night sweats, cough, and fatigue. Compare with this formula: no Maimendong, but contains Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), using both raw and prepared Dihuang. This is likely based on Wu's work. *Gujin Yijian* names a mixed formula Ziyin Jianghuo Tang with further modifications.] *Jishi Quanshu* treats yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity causing bleeding, fever, night sweats, cough with phlegm-wheezing, palpitations, and dry mouth. Remove Tianmendong from this formula, add Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), and Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) [use raw Dihuang]. Also treats yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity, fever, cough, expectoration, and urgent wheezing. Remove Guishen, Gancao, and Huangbai, add Baibu (Stemonae Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Fuling (Poria Cocos), Huangqi (Astragali Membranacei Radix), and Digupi (Lycii Cortex) [use both raw and prepared Dihuang].
Si Yin Jian (Four-Yin Decoction) is a formula for protecting the lung and clearing metal (Lung), hence named Si Yin. It treats yin deficiency consumptive damage, flourishing ministerial fire, fluid exhaustion with thirst, coughing, hematemesis, epistaxis, and excessive heat.
Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) - 2-3 qian; Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) - 2 qian; Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) - 2 qian; Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) - 2 qian; Shashen (Glehniae Radix) - 2 qian; Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw) - 1 qian; Fuling (Poria Cocos) - 1.5 qian.
Add two zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 70%, take long after meals. (*Jingyue Quanshu*)
*Fangmai Zhengzong* treats yin deficiency with flaming fire, afternoon chills and fever, bone-steaming night fever, cough without phlegm, constipation, scanty dark urine, or urinary retention/dribbling with white turbidity. Use Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 4 liang, Shashen (Glehniae Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huaishanyao (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Yinchaihu (Cynanchi Stauntonii Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex) - each 3 liang; Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) - each 2 liang; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 liang. Divide into 20 doses, decoct in water and take. (*Huiyan*) Also *Fangmai Bencao* treats bone-steaming internal heat or consumptive chills and fever. Remove Xuanshen, Chaihu, and Gancao from this formula, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huafen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). Beyond the Six Extremes, there are Seven Injuries. The first is great anger, where rebellious qi damages the Liver. Liver damage leads to blood deficiency and dim vision; this formula should govern. (*Yifang Kao*) [Note: This refers to adding Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus). Xiaoyao San is found in the *Furen* chapter.]
Ruijin Dan (Auspicious Gold Pill) treats consumptive disease with hemoptysis and blood stasis.
Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, mixed with wine, stir-fried black until yellow smoke rises); Zhen Qiushi (Urinal Stone) - each 1 liang.
Grind into fine powder. Boil red jujube flesh to form pills the size of mung beans. Take two qian on an empty stomach with mint soup. If stasis is in the Pericardium with frequent palpitations, flushed face, and confusion, add 3 qian of real Yujin (Curcumae Radix) [authentic if skin color resembles wu-tong seed wrinkles]. If stasis is in the Stomach with massive hematemesis, send down with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). (*Yitong*) [Note: This is also cooling, so still attached here.]
Moxibustion Method. For visceral qi deficiency and exhaustion, insufficient true qi, and all qi disorders lingering without cure, moxa Qihai (CV6). (*Tongren*) For fu-zang deficiency, cold exhaustion of the lower origin, etc., moxa Dantian (CV8). For yang qi deficiency and exhaustion, seminal emission and infertility, moxa Zhongji (CV3). Shenshu (BL23) treats consumptive emaciation, long-standing cold in the Kidney water organ, turbid urine with sperm, pain in the yin, five labors and seven injuries, exhaustion, cold feet like ice, and edema like water. (*Tongren*) Qugu (CV2) governs seminal emission and exhaustion of the five zang organs; moxa 50 moxa-cones. (*Qianjin*) *Ming Xia* states: For all deficiency, exhaustion, and extreme cold, moxibustion is suitable. Gaohuangshu (BL43) treats everything, emaciation and deficiency damage, nocturnal seminal emission, upward qi with cough and reversal, mania, and forgetfulness. (*Zisheng Jing*) Moxa Labor Method: The two Gaohuang points can restore life. Alternatively, align opposite the navel on the spinal column; moxibustion is also effective, but do not use too many moxa cones. (*Zhizhi Fang*)
Case of Deficiency with Heat: The son of Otun Zhouqing, Vice Commissioner of Jiankang Dao, aged twenty-three, in March of Wuyin year of Zhiyuan, suffered from fever, muscle emaciation, limb fatigue, lethargy, night sweats, loose frequent stools, borborygmus, loss of appetite, insensitivity of taste on the tongue, reluctance to speak, intermittent symptoms for about half a year. He asked me to treat him. His pulse was floating and rapid, but forceless upon pressure. This corresponds to Wang Shuhe's Floating Pulse Song: "Cold accumulates in the zang, heat resides in the Ying; to generate essence, one must tonify deficiency." First, moxa Zhongwan (CV12), the hub of the Stomach, to guide clear qi upward to nourish the muscles and skin. Then moxa Qihai (CV6) to generate primal qi, nourish the hundred vessels, and grow muscles. Then moxa Zusanli (ST36), the He-sea point of the Stomach, to assist stomach qi, withdraw upper heat, and direct it downward to the yin aspect. Use sweet-cold agents to drain fierce fire. Assist with sweet-warm agents to nourish middle qi. Eat rice and mutton to consolidate stomach qi. Advise caution in speech, moderation in diet, restraining anger, and curbing desires. The disease qi decreased daily. Within months, qi recovered. By the second year, he was twice as robust as usual. (*Baojian*)
Regulation Method. Various deficiencies and hundred damages all originate from the Heart and Kidney. Once the disease reaches this stage, if one cannot maintain discipline, pursuing wealth/profit or clinging to lust, damaging Kan and Li (Water and Fire), gradually leading to deep emaciation, moving far from life. Those interested in health preservation should feel compassion, strictly regulate daily routine, moderate diet, dwell in quiet rooms, not covet wealth/nobility, not complain of poverty/humility, not indulge in alcohol/lust, and focus on taking medicine. Treatment should prioritize calming the mind and concentrating the spirit, then astringing essence and tonifying the Kidney, and the disease will surely heal. (*Zhibing Huofang Mifang*)
For those suffering from this, urgently abstain from sexual desire to nourish essence, practice inner observation to nourish spirit, avoid anger and overwork to conserve qi, then true yin water will naturally fill, and internal fire will naturally subside. How could it not be cured? Only because of unregulated desires, irregular routine, excessive eating and drinking, scattering the spirit and exhausting essence, drying up blood and losing qi, until unremitting fever, skeletal emaciation, and death occur. Truly lamentable. (*Dingbu Mingyi Zhizhang*)
