(Yan Yonghe's) Wuyao Shunqi San (Mayapple Smooth Qi Powder) consists of Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Ganjiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), and Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang). It is decocted with dried silkworm (Jiangcan) and honey-fried licorice root (Zhigancao), adding fresh ginger for administration. This formula details the treatment of sudden reversal of qi due to middle-jiao obstruction. (If there is sudden reversal, phlegm obstruction, locked jaw, and hidden pulse: if the body is warm, it is Wind-stroke; if the body is cold, it is Middle-Qi disorder. Wind-stroke often involves phlegm-saliva, whereas Middle-Qi disorder does not; this distinguishes them. Scholar Xu stated: Middle-Qi disorder should not be treated as Wind-stroke. Yu Jiayan said: Wind-stroke cases often involve Middle-Qi disorder. Wuyao and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium are each used in 2 qian, while Chuanxiong Rhizome, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Platycodonis Radix, and Ephedrae Herba are each used in 1 qian. Dried silkworm (cleaned of silk mouth and stir-fried), roasted ginger, and honey-fried licorice root are each used in 5 fen. Add fresh ginger and jujube for decoction. Ephedrae Herba and Platycodonis Radix release the exterior and disperse cold to smooth exterior qi; Wuyao, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, and Aurantii Fructus Immaturus move qi and resolve phlegm to smooth interior qi. Dried silkworm clears heat, transforms phlegm, and dispels wind; Licorice Root harmonizes the various herbs. Ancient texts state that when qi flows smoothly, wind scatters itself. In cases of sudden wind attack, one should first treat the branch/symptoms.)
(Zhu Danxi's) Yueju Wan (Sojourning Depression Pill) treats six types of depression caused by qi, blood, phlegm, fire, dampness, and food stagnation. (These six constitute the Six Depressions.) The formula includes Chuanxiong Rhizome, Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), and Malt Processed (Shenqu), allowing qi to flow freely, relieving depression, and alleviating pain and distension. (Wu Hegao stated: Cyperi Rhizoma opens Qi Depression, Atractylodis Rhizoma dries Dampness Depression, Chuanxiong Rhizome regulates Blood Depression, Gardeniae Fructus clears Fire Depression, and Malt Processed resolves Food Depression. All in equal parts, formed into pills with wheat paste. Additionally: for Dampness Depression add Poria (Fuling) and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix; for Fire Depression add Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai); for Phlegm Depression add Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia), Trichosanthis Radix (Gualou), and Pyritum (Haishi); for Blood Depression add Peach Kernel (Taoren) and Carthami Flos (Honghua); for Qi Depression add Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) and Arecae Seed (Binglang); for Food Depression add Hordeum Vulgare Sprout (Maiya) and Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha); for Cold compounding add Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu).) There is also Liuyu Tang (Six-Depression Decoction) containing Atractylodis Rhizoma, Chuanxiong Rhizome, Cyperi Rhizome, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Poria, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Pinelliae Tuber, Gardeniae Fructus, and Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen). (This is a modified version of the previous formula, treating Phlegm Depression concurrently. The most prominent of the six depressions serves as the sovereign herb, while other herbs are adjusted according to clinical presentation.)
(Sourced from *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*) Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Fruit Descending Qi Decoction) is based on Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Pinelliae Tuber, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang). It is indicated for cough and asthma due to phlegm, characterized by deficiency in the lower jiao and excess in the upper jiao. If qi deficiency is present, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) may be added according to circumstances. (Perillae Fructus (Suzi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Pinelliae Tuber, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Peucedani Radix, Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex processed with ginger juice are each used in 1 qian; Cinnamomi Cortex and honey-fried Licorice Root are each used in 5 fen. Decoct with fresh ginger. Another variant omits Cinnamon Twig and adds Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang). Perillae Fructus, Peucedani Radix, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, and Pinelliae Tuber descend qi and move phlegm; where qi moves, phlegm follows. These herbs also have exterior-releasing properties. Angelicae Sinensis Radix harmonizes blood, and Licorice Root moderates the middle. Due to lower deficiency and upper excess, Official Cinnamon (Guan Gui) is used to guide fire back to its source. In cases of qi deficiency, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) may also be added.)
