Position opposite the umbilicus, select acupoints on the spinal column for moxibustion; this is highly effective.
Ningrenbai (Human Tooth Fossil) and Yanxiao (Saltpeter), one tael each.
Take one bowl of water, filter the liquid through unbleached paper without ash, grind finely, boil in a double boiler, grind again, and add a small amount of Bingpian (Borneol). Use a small amount each time, apply with an ear-wand tool, and insufflate into the nose to achieve a cure. Hu Jijiao from Xiangyang Prefecture specialized in selling this medicine, accumulating tens of thousands of min (a unit of currency). He kept it secret, but Official Shang obtained it through stratagem.
For treating lateral or frontal headaches accompanied by incessant nausea and vomiting.
Xicha Ya (Fine Tea Teeth/Compressed Tea), one tael; Sheng Caowu (Raw Aconitum carmichaelii Radix), half a tael, peeled and tip removed; Xixin (Asarum), half a tael.
Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take five qian per dose, add two zhan of water, simmer slowly until reduced to six fen, strain the dregs, and take warm. One dose yields results.
For treating lower back pain that feels heavy in both men and women, making walking difficult and unbearable, use Funiu Wan (Aconite and Black Morning Glory Pill). (Transmitted by Shangguan Zhupo.)
Fuzi (Prepared Aconitum carmichaelii Lateralis Radix Praeparata), half a tael, processed, peel and navel removed; Heiqianniu (Black Semen Phaseoli Volubilis), stir-fried on a tile until dry.
Grind the above into a fine powder, mix with wine-boiled flour paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take thirty pills at empty stomach with warm wine. If the pain is only on one side of the waist, use only Heiqianniu: roast half on a tile until dry, process half of the Fuzi, leave the rest raw without peeling. Pound and sieve into powder, and administer as previously described.
Fupenzi (Rubus chingii Fruit)
Take the leaves, crush them, and drip the juice into the eyes; worms will immediately emerge. Official Shang stated: In previous years, while residing at Shuangshuang Temple in Liuyang County, Tanzhou, there was a wet nurse for a Grand Uncle Taiwei who suffered from Lanyuan Fengyan (Marginal Blepharitis with Wind-Evil) for nearly twenty years. One day, a herbalist woman passed by and said, "This old woman can cure this eye disease; there are red, long worms in the eye, thin as silk." She then went into the mountains to gather herbs. Her family sent someone to follow her, seeing only her collecting tree leaves along the mountain path, crushing them by hand, chewing them in her mouth, retaining the juice, covering the patient's eyes with black gauze, drawing outlines of both eyes on the gauze, and then dripping the medicinal juice onto the lower margin of the eye. Soon, worms emerged from the gauze, numbering seventeen, much to the family's delight. The woman left and returned a few days later; the flesh on the lower margin of the eye had dried and returned to normal. She treated the upper margin of the eye using the same method, extracting more than ten worms. The woman told Official Shang, "You are a medical official; you must not withhold this prescription. You must pay me twenty thousand coins." Official Shang agreed. He gathered nearby village women suffering from this eye condition to treat them, all of whom recovered. The woman added, "This prescription comes from the annotation of Fupenzi in the Fruit Section of Bencao (Materia Medica), which states that crushing leaves to extract juice and dripping it into the eyes removes skin redness and causes worms like silk threads to emerge." Official Shang used it frequently with success.
