Eye Lid Fungus Poison refers to a condition caused by damp-heat previously existing in the Spleen Meridian, compounded by emotional frustration and Qi stagnation. The lesion manifests as a fungus-like growth inside the eyelid, with a large head and small stalk, gradually growing and protruding downwards. In severe cases, it causes eversion of the eyelids and tearing; if prolonged, it may lead to visual impairment. The treatment method involves soaking soft cotton paper in water, applying it to the eyelid for a moment, placing the thumbnail of the left hand at the root of the lesion, and using the sharp point of a lancet held in the right hand to cut it off flush with the root. Bleeding is not a concern; immediately apply a thick paste made from Cuiyun Ding (Emerald Cloud Pill) ground with liquid to stop the bleeding. Internally, Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) or Qingspi Yin (Spleen-Clearing Decoction) should be taken. If treated at the initial stage, Qingliang Wan (Cooling Pill) can be used for washing.
Eye Lid Phlegm Nodules are formed between the skin and flesh of the upper and lower eyelids. They vary in size from that of a date to a bean, are movable upon palpation, have normal skin color, and present as hard swellings without pain. This condition arises from damp-phlegm and Qi stagnation. Externally, raw Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema Rhizome) soaked in vinegar and ground into a thick paste should be frequently applied to the eyelids. For recent onset, the nodules will disappear quickly; for long-standing cases, although they cannot be eliminated immediately, frequent application will thin the skin slightly and cause minor abrasion. Squeezing out a white powder-like fluid with fingernails leads to recovery. Most cases resolve through dispersion.
Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis/Brain Leak) is characterized by continuous flow of turbid nasal discharge, which may be yellow or white, or bloody and purulent. If it persists without healing, it is termed "Brain Leak." This results from wind-heat scorching the brain, causing fluids to seep downward, representing a Kidney Deficiency syndrome. The Classics state: "Brain seepage becomes nasal mucus." It also states: "Gallbladder transfers heat to the brain." *Yuan Bing Shi* (Treatise on Original Causes of Disease) notes: "Like fire smelting metal, extreme heat transforms into water." However, investigating the root cause, it must be due to Kidney Yin Deficiency failing to grasp Qi and return it to its origin. Consequently, Fire acts without restraint, pressing upward against Lung Metal. Thus, the Qi of body fluids fails to descend, accumulates in the orifices, transforms into turbid mucus, and flows in reverse. This further weakens the Liver and Kidneys, resulting in ascending without descending, Yang without Yin. Yin Deficiency leads to disease; Yin exhaustion leads to death. At this stage, one should avoid anger to nourish Yang, abstain from desires to nourish Yin, avoid roasted foods and alcohol to prevent generating heat. Then, relying on a skilled physician, the treatment principle prioritizes nourishing the Kidney and clearing the Lung as the sovereign herb, resolving stagnation and regulating Qi as the minister herb, and tonifying Yin and nourishing Blood as the assistant herb. This allows Fire to subside and Lung Metal to clear, ensuring proper descending function, smooth Qi flow, relief of stagnation, and unobstructed clear orifices. With Yang opening and Yin closing working in harmony, each Zang-Fu organ performs its duties, and the patient carefully cultivates their root while medication treats the illness, there is a chance of cure. However, if one is arrogant, reckless, or mistakenly uses cooling medicines, even Cang Gong or Bian Que cannot prolong life. For primary treatment formulas, Cang Er San (Xanthium Powder) is used for early stages, while Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), Maiwei Dihuang Tang (Lily and Cornus Rehmannia Pill), or Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free Wanderer Powder) are selected based on the situation.
Bi Zhi (Nasal Polyp) refers to fleshy growths inside the nose, clustered like pomegranate seeds, gradually enlarging and drooping, sometimes retracting or protruding, blocking the orifices and preventing free airflow. This is caused by unclear Lung Qi and stagnation of wind-dampness. The nostrils are the orifice of the Lung, the gateway for respiration; their Qi connects upward to the Brain and downward to the Lung. When Lung Qi is congested and obstructed, various diseases arise, leading to nasal polyps. Internally, Xin Yi San (Magnolia Bud Powder) or Xin Yi Qingfei Yin (Magnolia Bud Lung-Clearing Decoction) is indicated. Externally, Niao Sha San (Ammonium Chloride Powder) should be applied daily until the growth dissolves into fluid, indicating recovery. One should maintain regular daily routines and moderate diet to prevent recurrence.
Bi Nu (Epistaxis/Nosebleed) occurs when Heart Fire, Lung Fire, or Stomach Fire forces blood to move recklessly upward, invading the clear pathways. It can be caused by pathogenic factors of the Six Excesses spreading through meridians and forcing fluids/blood out of the clear pathways; by emotional injuries disturbing internal blood, which rises with Qi; or by excessive consumption of rich, greasy foods causing accumulated heat. Treatment methods: For external causes, use acrid-cool, clearing, and moistening agents such as Ling Yang Jiao (Antelope Horn), Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - note: use substitutes in modern practice), Xi Sheng Di Huang (Young Rehmannia Root), Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), Sheng Shi Gao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit), and Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex). For internal causes, if Liver Yang transforms into Wind and rebels upward, use sweet-salty, gentle, and softening agents such as E Jiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root), Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix). If Kidney Yin is deficient with floating Deficient Yang, prioritize nourishing and anchoring Yin using Liu Wei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill) or Hu Qian Wan (Tiger Locking Pill). For excess Fire due to irregular diet, use methods to harmonize Yang and eliminate toxicity, such as Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity). Another text states that postpartum women presenting with black qi around the mouth and nose, accompanied by epistaxis, are considered incurable. Why? The essence of the Five Zang organs ascends to the face. Redness indicates vibrant Yang-Heat energy; bluish-black indicates dying Yin-Cold energy. Since the mouth and nose are areas of the Yangming Meridian with abundant blood and Qi, the appearance of Yin-Cold desolation indicates the decay of Stomach Yang-Qi. Combined with epistaxis, it signifies loss of Yang and escape of Yin. With Stomach exhaustion and Lung failure, both Yin and Yang perish, making it incurable.
