[Symptoms of Insomnia Caused by Gallbladder Fire] Coldness and obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, distension and fullness in the hypochondrium, are caused by Gallbladder Fire invading the Spleen. Restlessness and confusion of the Heart, mental vagueness and uneasiness, and in severe cases, yellowing or reddening of the eyes with inability to sleep at night, constitute the symptoms of insomnia caused by Gallbladder Fire.
[Causes of Insomnia Caused by Gallbladder Fire] These may arise from stagnation of Liver and Gallbladder Qi, where Wood Qi fails to flow smoothly; or from irregular diet and alcohol consumption, leading to accumulation of Damp-Heat in the Gallbladder; or from anger injuring the Liver, causing Gallbladder Qi to rebel upward, refining Stomach fluids into Phlegm and Fluid retention, thereby preventing sleep at night.
[Pulse Signs of Insomnia Caused by Gallbladder Fire] A wiry and large pulse at the Right Guan position indicates Gallbladder Fire invading the Spleen; a wiry and rapid pulse at the Left Guan position indicates restless Gallbladder Fire; a wiry and slippery pulse at the Cun and Guan positions indicates Gallbladder Saliva flooding the Heart.
[Treatment for Insomnia Caused by Gallbladder Fire] For cases where Gallbladder Fire invades the Spleen, use Qing Dan Zhu Ru Tang (Clear the Gallbladder Bamboo Shavings Decoction). If only the Left Guan pulse is enlarged, use Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentian Decoction to Drain the Liver) with added Dan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile). For cases where Gallbladder Saliva floods the Heart, combine Dan Xing Tang (Arisaema Decoction), Xie Xin Tang (Drain the Heart Decoction), and Niu Huang Qing Xin Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill to Clear the Heart).

[Symptoms of Insomnia Caused by Lung Obstruction] Panting, coughing, and rebellious Qi, frequent expectoration of phlegm and saliva, pulling pain in the right hypochondrium and Quepen area, and in severe cases, panting requiring leaning on shoulders for support with aggravated rebellious Qi when lying flat, constitute the symptoms of insomnia caused by Lung Obstruction.
[Causes of Insomnia Caused by Lung Obstruction] These may arise from pre-existing heat in the Lung, where Metal is punished by Fire; or from phlegm in the Lung causing obstruction of Lung Qi; or from dryness of the Lung with dried-up fluids, resulting in scorching heat and fullness in the Lung; or from cold in the Lung causing impaired movement of Lung Qi. All these conditions result in insomnia caused by Lung Obstruction.
[Pulse Signs of Insomnia Caused by Lung Obstruction] A rapid and large pulse at the Right Cun position indicates Metal being punished by Fire. A deep and slippery pulse indicates internal retention of Lung Phlegm. A fine and rapid pulse at the Cun Kou position indicates dryness and depletion of Lung fluids. A deep and slow pulse at the Cun position indicates Lung cold coagulation.
[Treatment for Insomnia Caused by Lung Obstruction] For pre-existing heat in the Lung, use Jia Mi Xie Bai San (Secret Family Powder to Drain the White/Lung). For phlegm obstructing the Lung orifices, use Su Zi Xing Zi Tang (Perilla Seed and Apricot Kernel Decoction) with added Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) and Gua Lou Ren (Trichosanthis Semen).
