At the initial stage, the white membrane appears inside or outside the glottis (throat gate). Its color must be bright, moist, and flat. The entire throat is pale red, slightly swollen with mild pain. Symptoms include headache, aversion to cold, and fever. Diet remains normal. The tongue coating is white. Bowel movements and urination are harmonious. This constitutes its clinical presentation. Since the pathogenic cold evil remains in the exterior, treatment should employ Chaihu Yin (Bupleurum Decoction), Shen Ai Yin (Ginseng and Mugwort Decoction), or Jingfang Baidu San (Scutellaria and Saposhnikovia Powder to Overcome Toxicity) with modifications.

When the white membrane appears inside the glottis, it forms spots or patches. Or the entire throat is covered in white, resembling coagulated paste. The interior of the throat is pale red and slightly swollen. Pain comes and goes. Stiffness and pain occur in the head and neck. The body feels heavy. Aversion to cold and fever are present. Cough is accompanied by Jie Xiong (chest binding syndrome, characterized by hardness and pain in the chest and hypochondrium). The voice is low, and phlegm is obstructive. The tongue coating is invariably white and thick/greasy. There is a lack of appetite. Dizziness occurs. Fatigue leads to a desire to lie down. Alternatively, hands and feet may be cold, there may be rebellious qi causing nausea, and abdominal pain. This constitutes its clinical presentation. Since the pathogenic cold evil has entered the interior, treatment should employ Wu Ji San (Five Accumulations Powder), Shen Gui Yin (Ginseng and Cinnamon Decoction), or Wen Wei Tang (Stomach-Warming Decoction) with modifications.
