Atractylodis Rhizoma (Wu Qian / 5 qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (each San Qian / 3 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Er Qian / 2 qian).
When dampness overflows internally, it causes fullness and oppression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, as well as mountain miasma (shān lán zhàng qì) and intolerance to local conditions. The main herb of this formula is Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), which has a naturally pungent and fierce nature; when combined with Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), it dries dampness and promotes the flow of Qi. Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo) is slightly bitter and warm; when harmonized with Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), it expands the middle jiao and disperses fullness. These four herbs contain both purgative and tonifying properties, and cool and warm elements, directly bringing the Spleen and Stomach earth into harmony, permanently eliminating the risk of dampness stagnation; hence it is called Pingwei (Leveling the Stomach). Furthermore, the Classics state: "Grain Qi connects to the Spleen." Mountain miasma belongs to Grain Qi. When humans are affected by it and suffer from intolerance to local conditions, leading to abdominal distension and loss of appetite, it is because Earth dampness is excessive. Therefore, Atractylodis Rhizoma is used to dry dampness, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma to harmonize, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex to expand the middle and promote Qi flow to move stagnation. Adding Maiya (Malt) and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven) to this base formula creates Jiawei Pingwei San (Modified Pingwei Powder), treating undigested food retention, acid regurgitation, and belching. Adding Huoxiang (Patchouli) and Banxia (Pinellia) creates Buhuanjin Zhengqi San (Buhuanjin Upright Qi Powder), treating abdominal pain, vomiting, and miasma-induced damp malaria. Adding Caoguo (Tsaoko), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube) creates Duijin Yinzi (Golden Pair Decoction), treating malaria. Adding Ren Shen (Ginseng), Fuling (Poria), and Wumei (Mume Fruit) to the decoction creates Renshen Yangwei Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Stomach Decoction), treating external contraction of wind-cold, internal injury from raw/cold foods, and malaria arising from retained food and phlegm stagnation. Combining this base formula with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) creates Chai Ping Tang (Bupleurum-Pingwei Decoction), treating damp malaria. Damp malaria is characterized by whole-body pain upon onset, heaviness in the hands and feet, more chills than fever, and a soggy pulse (Ru Mai).
Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zisu (Perillae Folium), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Jiang Chao Houpo (Ginger-fried Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Mi Zhi Gancao (Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma).
If the eyes are already diseased, and suddenly headache and abdominal pain occur, accompanied by simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, this indicates cold invasion and food stagnation. This formula uses Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Perillae Folium, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix to disperse deficient wind and drive out yin cold; Amomi Fructus, Agastaches Herba, Crataegi Fructus, and Hordei Fructus Germinatus correct rebellious qi and eliminate stagnation and greasiness. Additionally, Fresh Ginger and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex regulate the middle jiao, honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma harmonizes, and Cyperi Rhizoma and Atractylodis Rhizoma regulate Qi. Administered in a large dose via decoction, efficacy should be immediate. Therefore, in cases of variola (smallpox) or rubeola (measles) with fever, acute abdominal pain, or vomiting/diarrhea, if the symptoms match, the response method remains unchanged; administering this powder is excellent.
The poem states: Pingwei contains Chenpi, Cangzhu, Gancao, and Houpo; Shengxiao adds Baizhi, Xiong, Zisu, and Huoxiang; Shanzha, Maiya, Xiangfu, and Sharen complete it; Juejiao's edition of this formula differs significantly from older versions.
