Quince (Chaogua, 木瓜), Magnolia Bark (Houpo, 厚朴), White Hyacinth Bean (Bian Dou, 白扁豆), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Amomum Fruit (Sharen, 砂仁), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, 半夏), Apricot Seed (Xing Ren, 杏仁), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu, 白术), Ginseng Root (Renshen, 人参), Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草), Agastache Herb (Huoxiang, 藿香).
The term "Liuhe" (Six Harmonies) refers to the harmonization of the Six Qi (Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, and Fire). In summer, people are prone to simultaneous exposure to multiple pathogenic factors; therefore, treatment should first focus on regulating the Spleen and Stomach. This approach demonstrates a physician's understanding of grasping the primary contradiction. Regarding the nature of medicinal substances: aromatic herbs can awaken the Spleen, such as Huoxiang and Houpo; pungent herbs can warm the Stomach, such as Banxia and Sharen. The use of Sizijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction, composed of Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, Gancao) aims to address the fact that during intense heat, Lung Metal and Kidney Water are inevitably damaged; thus, supporting the body's righteous Qi helps resist the pathogenic factors that overcome it. Additionally, Xingren and Chaogua, which clear dryness and generate fluids, combined with the aforementioned herbs, form a formula for harmonizing the Six Qi. If the condition is caused by Cold injury, add Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) to warm and disperse Yin-cold rebellion; if caused by Heat injury, add Mosla Herb (Xiangru) to vent Summerheat Qi. Suopi Yin uses Sharen, Kudzu Root (Gegen), Tsaoko Cardamom (Caoguo), Mume Fruit (Wumei), Bian Dou, and Gancao to treat latent heat in the nine months of summer and injuries from alcohol and food, possessing the functions of regulating the Spleen and clearing Summerheat. This shares similarities and differences with the current formula, representing a relationship where similarity exists within difference and difference within similarity.
Poem states: Liuhe Tang consists of Huoxiang, Houpo, Xingren, and Sharen, combined with Banxia, Renshen, and Red Poria (Chifuling); along with Bian Dou, Chaogua, Gancao, and Baizhu. When decocted, adding Ginger (Jiang) and Jujube (Zao) brings clarity and tranquility to the Qi.
Notopterygium Rhizome (Qianghuo), Angelica Pubescens Root (Duhuo), Ligusticum Rhizome (Bencao), Licorice Root (Gancao), Szechuan Lovage Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Chrysanthemum Flower (Manjingzi), Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng).
External invasion by Dampness causing headache and generalized body pain is primarily treated by this formula.
If the condition arises from Spleen and Stomach deficiency leading to internal generation of Dampness, formulas such as Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction, for drying dampness and resolving phlegm) or Pingwei San (Powder for Leveling the Stomach, for drying dampness and promoting Spleen function) should be used. If water retention occurs in the diaphragm area, and excessive Dampness leads to loose stools (Ru Xie), formulas like Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder, for clearing Summerheat and promoting urination) or Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria, for promoting urination and leaching out dampness) are appropriate. If water-dampness infiltrates the skin, causing limb edema and abdominal distension with yellowing, formulas such as Wupi San (Five-Bark Powder, for reducing edema) or Yinchenshao Tang (Artemisia Capillaris Decoction, for clearing heat, draining dampness, and relieving jaundice) should be employed. However, the current presentation of headache and generalized body pain indicates Dampness flowing into the joints, which is certainly not suitable for the aforementioned formulas. The Classics state: "No orifice is inaccessible, only Wind medicines can reach [the upper parts]." Therefore, Huangqi and Gancao are used to lead various Wind-dispelling herbs to ascend and disperse the pathogen. One might ask: Since these drugs belong to the category of Wind medicines, how can they overcome Dampness? Because Wind moves Qi, and when Qi moves, Dampness naturally dissipates. It is like freshly washed clothes hung high in the wind; before the day ends, the water dries up naturally. Removing Huangqi from this decoction, Wang Shi believed it could treat headaches caused by Wind-Cold invasion, which is also reasonable.
Poem states: Qianghuo Shengshi Tang relies mainly on Fangfeng, combined with Huangqi, Bencao, Manjingzi, and Chuanxiong. Adding Duhuo, Tianma, and Guizhi treats headaches caused by ascending Cold-Dampness, preventing them from attacking violently.
