The medical classics state: "Consumption of rich and greasy food can lead to the development of a major Ding (carbuncle/furuncle)." This condition arises from excessive intake of fatty, sweet, and strong-flavored foods, heat toxins generated by frying and roasting, as well as alcohol abuse and sexual indiscretion, causing evil filth to accumulate and condense. It may also result from accidentally eating dead cattle or horse meat, or during summer cooking of meat when human sweat drips into the meat; or when sweat drops from tofu makers; or when rice grains sink to the bottom of a water vat, rise after several days, and are boiled for consumption, which people occasionally eat (placing certain herbs like Xu Zhong in the water vat can prevent this). These lesions commonly occur on the head, face, forehead, eyebrows, lips, and limbs (arms and knees). Initially, although swollen, the shape is small with a depressed center, and the color varies between red, yellow, purple, and black. Some resemble yellow blisters containing black fluid, looking like minor sores but feeling hard upon pressure, accompanied by numbness or itching. Symptoms include initial chills followed by fever, chest distress, headache with stiffness, vomiting, dizziness, mental confusion, generalized numbness, heaviness in the limbs, and even palpitations and blurred vision. These are the signs. One should immediately chew raw soybeans; if they do not taste fishy, or chew raw alum; if it does not taste astringent, the diagnosis of Ding is confirmed without doubt. Prompt treatment is essential. The harm caused by sore toxins is unparalleled. Chronic Ding may kill within seven days, while acute Ding may kill within three days. People often fail to detect it early because it is small and lacks severe pain, leading to neglect (if neglected initially and one continues to consume fishy/alcoholic foods or engages in sexual activity, death will be rapid). Although this condition has various manifestations, the treatment principle remains consistent. In emergencies without medicine, apply garlic moxibustion. If there is no pain, remove the garlic and perform direct moxibustion; if still no pain after dozens of moxa cones, use a thick needle or chopstick heated red-hot over charcoal to cauterize the area until pain is felt. Prick the surrounding area with needles to bleed, and observe if red threads extend from the sore. If the sore is on the lips/mouth, the toxin enters the throat; if on the hand, it enters the heart; if on the foot, it enters the abdomen and causes death. Carefully locate the end of the red thread, prick it with a needle to release toxic blood, and apply a small amount of Chansu (Toad Venom) dissolved in wine. It is particularly advisable to pierce the Ding head with a silver hairpin tip and pour in wine-dissolved Chansu. If swelling occurs around the perimeter or small sores appear, known as "Huchang" (Protective Field), it is easy to treat; if no swelling occurs, it is difficult. Internally administer Jiajian Baidu San (Modified Toxin-Resolving Powder) and Loulu Tang (Loulu Decoction) to induce mild sweating, followed by Zhuoding Dueming Tang (Chasing Ding Life-Snatching Decoction), along with Zhenren Huoming Yin (True Person's Life-Saving Decoction), Wanbing Zijin Ding (Ten Thousand Diseases Purple Gold Pill), and other urgent methods. If drug action is too slow, the toxin attacks the heart, the patient sees darkness or firelight, and recovery becomes impossible.
