(Note: Numbness)
The Classics state: When Wind, Cold, and Dampness pathogenic factors mix and invade the body together, they combine to form Bi Syndrome (Obstruction Syndrome). Among them, Bi Syndrome with predominance of Wind is called Xing Bi (Wandering Bi); that with predominance of Cold is called Tong Bi (Painful Bi); and that with predominance of Dampness is called Zhuo Bi (Fixed Bi). Regarding the Five Bi Syndromes corresponding to seasons: Winter corresponds to Gu Bi (Bone Bi); Spring to Jin Bi (Tendon Bi); Summer to Mai Bi (Vessel Bi); Late Summer (Ji Xia) to Ji Bi (Muscle Bi); and Autumn to Pi Bi (Skin Bi). It is also stated: Blood coagulation in the skin layer constitutes Bi. Furthermore, Zhou Bi (General Bi) is characterized by pain migrating up and down the body, corresponding left and right along the meridians, with no interval between attacks. Zhong Bi (Multiple Bi) is characterized by pain having fixed locations, alternating in onset and cessation. Analysis: Wind, Cold, and Dampness pathogenic factors lodge between the Fen Rou (muscle intervals), compressing body fluids into foam; this foam aggregates upon encountering cold, and its aggregation squeezes the muscle intervals causing pain. This pathology is internally not in the Zang-Fu organs, externally not on the skin, but resides exclusively in the muscle intervals. If Bi Syndrome persists untreated, if in the bone, it causes heaviness and inability to lift; if in the tendons, flexion without extension; if in the muscles, numbness and insensibility (Bu Ren); if in the vessels, blood coagulation; if in the skin, coldness and shivering, none of which necessarily involve pain. Generally, Bi Syndrome becomes contracted upon encountering cold and relaxed upon encountering heat. Treatment should first focus on attacking Wind-Dampness and relieving pain; subsequently, nourishing Blood, moistening dryness, and nourishing Yin. A choppy and tight pulse indicates Bi Syndrome.
