The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: "If food and drink intake doubles, the intestines and stomach will be injured." Overconsumption of raw and cold foods, raw meat, and rich, sweet, or greasy foods damages the zang-fu organs, leading to the formation of accumulations. Damp-heat steaming and steaming each other transforms into parasites, similar to the principle that decaying grass turns into fireflies. There are nine types of worms in the human abdomen: namely, Fu worm (伏虫), roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides / 蛔虫), white worm (白虫), flesh worm (肉虫), lung worm (肺虫), stomach worm (胃虫), weak worm (弱虫), red worm (赤虫), and pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis / 蛲虫). Furthermore, influenced by the interaction of the Five Elements and the Five Flavors, such as those resembling turtles or earthworms, their varieties differ greatly, and treatments vary slightly accordingly. Patients present with heart and abdominal pain, abdominal distension and fullness, reduced appetite, vomiting of clear fluid, gradual emaciation, and bluish-black discoloration around the eyes and below the nose; these are the signs. If the primordial qi is still substantial, it is not a major harm; if the root is depleted, disaster follows. However, conditions such as Lao Zhai (Consumptive Disease / 劳瘵), various parasitic diseases, Shanghan (Cold Damage / 伤寒), Huhuo (Fox-Hu Syndrome / 狐惑), and anomalies like Ying Sheng Chong (Echoing Worm / 应声虫) or Xi Shu Chong (Stream Mouse Worm / 溪鼠虫) which defy rational explanation, do exist. A deep and solid pulse indicates survival; a deficient and large pulse indicates danger. Medications for expelling worms should be taken at the beginning of the lunar month, when the heads of the worms face upward.
Main Formula: Hei Qiu (Semen Cassiae / 黑丑) (half raw, half stir-fried, using the first powder) 3 liang; San Leng (Rhizoma Sparganii / 三棱) (stir-baked); Bing Lang (Areca Seed / 槟榔) 2 liang each; Lei Wan (Helwingia Fruit / 雷丸); Xi Hui (Tin Ash / 锡灰) (stir-fried with vinegar); Peng Zhu (Rhizoma Curcumae / 蓬术) (stir-baked); Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae / 木香); Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride / 青皮); Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei / 大黄) 2 liang each. Grind all into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Do not eat dinner on the night before the first to fifth days of the lunar month. At wu geng (approx. 1-3 AM), chew a piece of cooked meat, spit it out after a while, then immediately take with honey water or sugar water. If one can recall eating a specific food that caused the infestation, chew that food along with the medicine and swallow, continuing until the worms are expelled, then consume white rice porridge.
Hua Chong Wan (Worm-Expelling Pill): Lian Gen Pi (Cortex Meliae / 楝树根皮) (remove coarse bark); Shi Jun Zi Rou (Semen Quisqualis / 使君子肉); Bing Lang (Areca Seed / 槟榔); He Shi (Semen Pedalii / 鹤虱); Hu Fen (Lead Carbonate / 胡粉) (stir-fried); Wu Yi (Fructus Tsoosho / 芜荑) (stir-fried, use the kernel) 1 liang each; Bai Fan (Alumen / 白矾) 2 qian 5 fen. Grind into powder. Use juice from Gao Jia (Folliculus Gleditsiae Sinensis / 皂荚) to boil until thick, mix with powder to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Take 20 pills per dose. Children take 5 pills, washed down with rice soup.
Simple Prescription: Lian Gen Pi (Cortex Meliae / 楝根皮) 2 liang. Add three bowls of water, decoct until one and a half bowls remain, extract the juice, and cook with rice to make porridge. First chew a piece of stir-fried meat, then gradually finish the porridge; the worms will be expelled. Alternatively, chew seven Semen Quisqualis (Shi Jun Zi / 使君子) kernels and wash down with hot water; the worms will be expelled.
Cun Bai Chong (Taenia / 寸白虫): Fei Zi (Semen Torreyae / 榧子) 1 jin, remove shells. Consume entirely at the beginning of the lunar month; the worms will be expelled. If not fully expelled, consume again. Alternatively, use Bing Lang (Areca Seed / 槟榔) powder, washed down with scallion soup.
Hui Chong Gong Xin (Roundworm Attacking the Heart): Chuan Jiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli / 川椒), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis / 黄连), Wu Mei (Fructus Mume / 乌梅), decocted with Lian Gen (Rhizoma/ Cortex Meliae / 楝根); or Long Dan Cao (Radix Gentianae / 龙胆草) 1 liang decocted and taken. Do not eat on the evening prior.
