(Attachment: Syndrome of Yang Collapse)
The Classics state: Men reach the end of eight cycles of eight years (64 years), and their essence is exhausted; women reach the end of seven cycles of seven years (49 years), and their menstruation ceases. Human Yin Qi is only sufficient for thirty years of operation; it is difficult to form but easy to deplete. How can one indulge in lust? It is also said: At forty years of age, Yin Qi naturally halves, and daily activities decline. It is further stated: Excessive fullness from food causes sweat to issue from the Stomach; shock that steals Essence causes sweat to issue from the Heart; carrying heavy loads and traveling far causes sweat to issue from the Kidneys; running fast and feeling fear causes sweat to issue from the Liver; bodily movement and toil cause sweat to issue from the Spleen. It is also said: Prolonged visual strain damages Blood and injures the Heart; prolonged lying down damages Qi and injures the Lungs; prolonged sitting damages flesh and injures the Spleen; prolonged standing damages bones and injures the Kidneys; prolonged walking damages sinews and injures the Liver. As for the fire of the Five Zang organs flying away due to the Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Grief, Fear, Fright), and excessive licentiousness in male-female desires, these are the causes of Deficiency Consumption (Xu Sun). The *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: Contracting cold damages Yang; Yang deficiency leads to Yin excess. When damage proceeds from top to bottom: First damage injures the Lung, manifesting as gathered skin and falling hair; Second damage injures the Heart, manifesting as deficient and scanty blood vessels, failing to nourish the Zang-Fu organs, and in women, amenorrhea; Third damage injures the Stomach, manifesting as food failing to transform into muscle and flesh. Treatment should employ Acrid, Sweet, and Bland substances; if it exceeds the Stomach stage, it becomes incurable. Contracting heat damages Yin; Yin deficiency leads to Yang excess. Thus, when damage proceeds from bottom to top: First damage injures the Kidney, manifesting as bone atrophy unable to rise from bed; Second damage injures the Liver, manifesting as flaccid sinews unable to self-control; Third damage injures the Spleen, manifesting as inability to digest food. It is also said: Damage to the Heart and Lung manifests as weary complexion; damage to the Kidney and Liver manifests as emaciated form. It is also said: For damaged Lung, benefit its Qi; for damaged Heart, tonify its Ying Blood; for damaged Spleen, regulate diet and adapt to cold and warmth; for damaged Liver, soothe its interior; for damaged Kidney, benefit its Essence. Generally, Deficiency Consumption syndromes arise mostly from excessive sexual indulgence, unregulated joy and anger, irregular daily routines, and arbitrary eating habits. Any labor injury damages Qi. When Qi declines, Fire flares up; when Fire flares up, it overacts on Spleen Earth, causing Stomach Qi to scatter and dissolve, failing to nourish the hundred vessels, irrigate the Zang-Fu organs, and protect the body surface, thus disease forms. Therefore, symptoms include pain in all vessels, soreness and weakness of waist and legs, chest fullness and shortness of breath, mental restlessness, tinnitus and vertigo, dry mouth and night sweats, cough with sputum and blood, spermatorrhea and leukorrhea, undigested stool diarrhea with emaciation, poor appetite and lack of taste, palpitations during sleep, alternating chills and fever, fatigue and desire to lie down, and amenorrhea in women; all are signs of Deficiency Consumption. Pulse may be surging and rapid like blazing fire, knotted and choppy indicating blood loss, slippery and large indicating much phlegm, floating and long indicating severe cough. Most contraindicated is a fine, rapid, urgent, and choppy pulse at the Cun position overflowing its proper place; this is difficult to treat. This condition requires preventing subtle changes before they become obvious. If the disease has formed, one cannot rely entirely on medicinal power; it is imperative to abstain from intercourse, cut off anger, eat bland flavors, refrain from killing living beings, clear the mind and purify thoughts, and cultivate silently to achieve peace. Avoid fresh pork and various foods that generate fire or move Qi.
