Lei Gong said: I wish to hear in detail about the origin and generation of the meridians. The Yellow Emperor said: The meridians are used to determine life and death, manage various diseases, and regulate deficiency and excess; they must be thoroughly understood. ("Zu" means complete or entirely.)
The Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin originates from the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). (Among the twelve meridians, the Lung belongs to the Hand-Taiyin meridian. The Middle Jiao is located at the epigastrium, four cun above the umbilicus. The three Yin meridians of the hand travel from the zang organs to the hands; therefore, the Hand-Taiyin meridian originates here. All subsequent Hand-Yin meridians originate from the interior and emerge outward. I observe: These twelve meridians constitute the Ying-Nutritive Qi. Ying-Qi circulates within the vessels, and its sequence necessarily begins with the Lung Meridian because vessel qi flows through the meridians, and meridian qi converges in the Lung. The Lung receives all vessels to distribute Yin and Yang, allowing the five zang and six fu organs to receive qi. Thus, the twelve meridians start with the Lung Meridian, transmit sequentially, end at the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian, and then return to the Lung, completing one cycle.) It descends to connect with the Large Intestine. (Connect implies association. Located at the level of the Renmai Water Division point, the Lung meridian connects to the Large Intestine because the Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior pairs. Note: The twelve meridians are interconnected, each having an exterior-interior relationship. What remains within the same meridian is called "Shu" (belong), while what connects to another is called "Luo" (network). Thus, for Hand-Taiyin, it is "Shu Lung, Luo Large Intestine"; for Hand-Yangming, it is "Shu Large Intestine, Luo Lung". They alternate, always prioritizing the home meridian. The following twelve meridians follow this pattern.) It returns to follow the stomach opening, (Return means to go back. Follow means to circle along. From the Large Intestine upward, it again follows the stomach opening.) passes through the diaphragm to belong to the Lung. (Diaphragm refers to the diaphragmatic membrane. Humans have a diaphragm situated below the heart and lungs, aligned anteriorly with Jiutui and posteriorly with the eleventh thoracic vertebra. It surrounds and adheres to block turbid qi from ascending to smoke the heart and lungs. "Shu" refers to the domain belonging to.) It emerges horizontally from the lung system into the axilla. (The lung system refers to the trachea/throat. The throat facilitates breathing and connects downward to the lungs. Below the arm and above the ribs is the axilla. The axilla is beside the Zhongfu point. "Xi" is pronounced as 'xi'.) It descends along the medial aspect of the arm, (The medial side of the upper arm extends from the axilla down to the elbow. Tender white flesh is called 'gong', pronounced 'ru' or 'ruan', also cut as 'nu dao' or 'nu dao'.) running anterior to the Shaoyin and Pericardium meridians. (Shaoyin refers to the Heart Meridian. Pericardium refers to the Hand-Jueyin Meridian. Of the three Yin meridians of the hand, Taiyin is anterior, Jueyin is middle, and Shaoyin is posterior.) It descends to the elbow, follows the medial aspect of the forearm, (The junction of the arm and forearm is the elbow center, where the Chize point is located. Below the elbow is the forearm. "Nei" refers to the medial side. It runs past the Kongzui, Lieque, and Jingqu points.) ascends to the lower border of the bone, enters the Cunkou (Inch Position), (Bone refers to the styloid process of the radius at the wrist. Lower border refers to the lateral side below the bone. Cunkou refers to the pulse anterior to the Guan position, i.e., the Taiyuan point.) ascends to the Thenar eminence (Fish), follows the Yuji point, (Anterior to the wrist, between the base joint of the thumb, the fleshy prominence shaped like a fish is collectively called "Fish". Anterior to Cunkou and posterior to the Fish is the Yuji point.) emerges at the tip of the thumb; (Tip refers to the fingertip, i.e., the Shaoshang point, where the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian terminates.) Its branch arises from behind the wrist, goes straight out to the medial border of the index finger, and emerges at its tip. (Branch refers to a twig on a tree; this indicates collateral vessels branching off the main channel. The junction of the arm and palm is the wrist. This collateral of the meridian originates from the Lieque point on the dorsal-radial side of the wrist, exits at the tip of the index finger, intersects with the Shangyang point, and connects to the Hand-Yangming Meridian. The pathologies of the following twelve meridians are detailed in Disease Category Volume 10; since this text originates from the same chapter, they should be cross-referenced.)
The Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming originates at the tip of the index finger. (The Large Intestine belongs to the Hand-Yangming meridian. The index finger's tip is the Shangyang point. The three Yang meridians of the hand travel from the hand to the head; thus, the Hand-Yangming meridian originates here. This applies to all subsequent Hand-Yang meridians.) It follows the radial border of the finger, emerges between the two bones at Hegu, (Follow is defined previously; subsequent mentions will not repeat definitions unless necessary. Upper border refers to the radial side. For all meridians, Yang channels run on the exterior and Yin channels on the interior. Following the radial border of the finger involves the Erjian and Sanjian points. Hegu is a point name. Two bones refer to the space between the metacarpals of the thumb and index finger, commonly known as the tiger's mouth.) ascends into the depression between the two tendons, (The depression between the two tendons on the radial-dorsal side of the wrist is the Yangxi point.) follows the radial border of the forearm, enters the lateral aspect of the elbow, (Following Yangxi and other points upward leads to Quchi.) ascends along the anterior-lateral border of the upper arm, emerges anterior to the shoulder joint, (Ascending along the anterior-lateral border of the upper arm passes through Zhou Liao, Wuli, and Bi Nao. The gap at the acromion is the shoulder joint; ascending to Jianyu and Jugu. 'Yu' is synonymous with 'Yu'.) emerges superiorly at the confluence of the vertebral column, (Above the shoulders and back, at the root of the neck, is the Heavenly Pillar bone. All six Yang meridians converge at Dazhui of the Du Meridian, known as the Confluence.) descends into the Supraclavicular Fossa (Quepen) to network the Lung, descends through the diaphragm to belong to the Large Intestine; (From Dazhui forward, entering the Quepen of the Stomach Meridian, it networks the Lung, then descends through the diaphragm to the Tianshu area beside the umbilicus, belonging to the Large Intestine, forming an exterior-interior pair with the Lung.) Its branch arises from the Supraclavicular Fossa, ascends the neck, penetrates the cheek, and enters the lower teeth; (The neck is the stem of the head. The curved area below the ear is the cheek. Points in the neck include Tianding and Futu.) returns to emerge flanking the mouth, crossing at Renzhong, left crossing to right, right crossing to left, ascending to flank the nostrils. (Renzhong is the Shuigou point of the Du Meridian. Crossing Renzhong left and right, ascending to flank the nostrils, connects from Heliao to Yingxiang. The Hand-Yangming Meridian ends here, intersecting at Shangen and Chengqi to connect with the Foot-Yangming Meridian.)
The Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming originates at the intersection of the nose bridge. (The Stomach belongs to the Foot-Yangming meridian. 'Gen' refers to the nasal bridge, also called Shan Gen. Intersection means the meridians cross left and right. The three Yang meridians of the foot travel from the head to the feet; thus, the Foot-Yangming meridian originates here. This applies to all subsequent Foot-Yang meridians. Pronounced 'e'.) It receives the Qi of the Bladder Meridian laterally, (Receive means enter. The Foot-Taiyang Meridian originates at Jingming in the inner canthus, close to the Stomach Meridian, so Yangming enters it to descend.) descends along the lateral nose, enters the upper teeth; (Lateral nose corresponds to Chengqi, Sibai, and Juliao.) returns to emerge flanking the mouth, circling the lips, descending to intersect at Chengjiang, (Circle means to surround. Chengjiang is a Renmai point.) then follows the post-mental groove inferiorly, emerges at Daying, (Below the cheek is the mandible. The center of the mandible is the chin. From Dicang downward to Daying.) follows Jiache, ascends anterior to the ear, passes Guest Master (Ke Zhuren), follows the hairline, to the forehead; (Jiache is a local point below the ear. Ascending anterior to the ear is Xiaguan. Ke Zhuren is a Gallbladder Meridian point anterior to the ear. Following the hairline upward to Touwei reaches the forehead, meeting the Shenting point of the Du Meridian. Forehead refers to the area anterior to the hairline.) Its branch arises anterior to Daying, descends to Renying, follows the throat, enters the Supraclavicular Fossa, descends through the diaphragm to belong to the Stomach and network the Spleen; (Renying and Quepen are local points. Belonging to Stomach means the meridian belongs to the Stomach. Networking Spleen indicates the Stomach and Spleen are exterior-interior pairs. This branch enters internally from Quepen, descends through the diaphragm at the level of Shangwan and Zhongwan, belongs to the Stomach, and networks the Spleen.) Its direct pathway descends from the Supraclavicular Fossa along the medial edge of the breast, (Direct pathway means descending directly and externally. Descending from Quepen passes Qihu and other points to Ruzhong and Rugen.) descends flanking the umbilicus, (Tianshu and other points.) enters the Qi Street (Qichong); (Descending from Wailing and other points enters Qi Street, i.e., Qichong, located one cun above the inguinal region on both sides.) Its branch arises from the stomach outlet, descends along the abdominal interior, and meets the direct pathway at the Qi Street, (Stomach outlet is the lower opening of the stomach, at the Xiaowan level, called Youmen in the Nan Jing. Following the abdominal interior passes the exterior of the Kidney Meridian's Hwang membrane; this is the branch mentioned earlier descending from the stomach to merge with the direct pathway at Qi Street.) descends to Bituan, reaches Futu, descends to the patella, follows the lateral border of the tibia, descends to the dorsum of the foot, enters the medial space of the second toe; (Thigh is Bi. Reach means arrive. Bituan and Futu are points above the knee. Descending from Yingshi and other points. Knee cap is Bin. Tibia is Jing. Dorsum of foot is Fu. These correspond to Dubi, Zusanli, and Chongyang. Following Neiting enters the medial space of the second toe to exit at Lidui. Meaning of Lidui is detailed in its entry. Bi is pronounced 'bing mi' or 'bi'. Bin is 'pin' or 'pin'. Jing is 'xing jing'. Fu is 'fu' or 'fu'.) Another branch diverges three cun below the knee; descends into the lateral space of the second toe; Another branch diverges from the dorsum of the foot, enters the space between the great toes, and emerges at its tip. (Border refers to the upper border. Three cun below the knee is Fenglong. This is the Yangming collateral, hence descending to the lateral space of the second toe. Another branch diverges from Chongyang on the dorsum, enters the space between the great toes, obliquely exits past Xingjian of the Foot-Jueyin Meridian, follows the great toe to emerge at its tip, and connects to the Foot-Taiyin Meridian.)
The Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin originates at the tip of the great toe. (Spleen belongs to the Foot-Taiyin meridian. Originating at Yinbai at the tip of the great toe. The three Yin meridians of the foot travel from the foot to the abdomen; thus, the Foot-Taiyin meridian originates here. This applies to all subsequent Foot-Yin meridians.) It follows the medial white-flesh border of the toe, passes posterior to the nuclear bone, ascends anterior to the medial malleolus, (Following the medial white-flesh border passes Dadu and Taibai. Nuclear bone is the round bone on the medial side posterior to the base of the great toe. Shi says it is the calcaneus, which is incorrect; calcaneus is the ankle bone. Ancient texts mention striking the ankle, known in the North as hitting the 'Gu Gua'. There is only one nuclear bone, but ankle bones are medial and lateral. Shi identifying the heel as the ankle is also incorrect; that is the heel/sole, not the ankle. Ankle is pronounced 'hu gua'.) ascends along the medial calf, follows posterior to the tibia, crosses anterior to the Jueyin meridian, (Calf muscle is 'Gan', also called腓肠. Ascending from Lougu, crossing anterior to Jueyin refers to Dij and Yinlingquan. 'Gan' is interchangeable with 'Gan' in this meridian, pronounced 'zhuan'. Originally pronounced 'gan'; Yu Pian defines heel as 'gan'.) ascends to the anterior-medial border of the thigh, (Thigh is Gu. One definition says inner thigh is Gu. Anterior border refers to the upper side, near Xuehai and Jimen.) enters the abdomen to belong to the Spleen and network the Stomach, (Entering the abdomen via Chongmen. Spleen and Stomach are exterior-interior pairs; thus, at the level of Zhongwan and Xiawan, it belongs to the Spleen and networks the Stomach.) ascends through the diaphragm, flanks the pharynx, connects to the root of the tongue, and scatters under the tongue; (Pharynx swallows food and is posterior to the larynx. Ascending from the gastric cavity to here, it connects to the tongue root and scatters under the tongue. Root means base.) Its branch arises from the Stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, and pours into the Heart. (The external pathway of the Foot-Taiyin has four rows in the abdomen, ascending to Fushhe and Fujie, scattering in the chest, ending at Dabao. The internal branch arises from the Stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, pours into the Heart, and connects to the Hand-Shaoyin Meridian.)
The Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin originates in the Heart. (Heart belongs to Hand-Shaoyin, so the meridian originates in the Heart.) Emerges to belong to the Heart System. (The heart is below the fifth thoracic vertebra. It has five systems: the upper system connects to the Lung, the Lung's lower system connects to the Heart, and the Heart's lower three systems connect to the Spleen, Liver, and Kidney. Thus, the Heart communicates with the Qi of the five zang organs and serves as the master. Xi is pronounced 'xi'.) Descends through the diaphragm to network the Small Intestine; (Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior pairs; thus, descending through the diaphragm at the Xiawan level, two cun above the umbilicus, it networks the Small Intestine.) Its branch arises from the Heart System, ascends to flank the pharynx, and connects to the Eye System; (Branch: From the Heart System, exiting the Renmai, ascending to flank the pharynx, connecting to the Eye System to meet the inner canthus.) Its direct pathway rises from the Heart System to the Lung, descends to emerge from the axilla, (Direct pathway is the main channel. Rising from the Heart System to the Lung, passing by Yuanye of the Foot-Shaoyang, emerging from the axilla, ascending to Ququan, this marks the beginning of the external course of the Hand-Shaoyin Meridian.) descends along the posterior-medial border of the arm, runs posterior to the Taiyin and Pericardium meridians, (Posterior-medial border of the arm is Qingling. Of the three Yin meridians of the hand, Shaoyin is posterior to Taiyin and Jueyin.) descends to the elbow interior, follows the posterior-medial border of the forearm, (Shaohai, Lingdao, etc.) reaches the end of the sharp bone posterior to the wrist, (The ankle-like prominence below the wrist is the sharp bone, Shenmen point.) enters the posterior-medial aspect of the palm, follows the medial side of the little finger to emerge at its tip. (Shaofu, Shaochong. Hand-Shaoyin Meridian ends here, intersecting at the lateral side of the little finger to connect to the Hand-Taiyang Meridian. Shi says: The Heart is the Sovereign Official, honored above other zang organs; thus, its meridian intersections do not require branches/collaterals.)
The Small Intestine Meridian of Hand-Taiyang originates at the tip of the little finger. (Small Intestine belongs to Hand-Taiyang. Originating at Shaoze at the lateral tip of the little finger.) Follows the lateral aspect of the hand, ascends to the wrist, emerges from the malleolus, (Qian Gu, Hou Xi, Wang Gu, etc.) goes straight up along the ulnar border of the forearm, emerges between the two tendons at the medial elbow, (Following the ulnar border passes Yanggu, etc., emerging in the depression between the two bony prominences at the medial elbow, Xiaohai point. Pressing here transmits sensation to the little finger.) ascends along the posterior-lateral border of the upper arm, (Running external to Hand-Yangming and Hand-Shaoyang.) emerges from the shoulder joint, circles the scapula, crosses the shoulders, (The posterior bone gap of the shoulder is the shoulder joint, i.e., Jianzhen. Scapula includes Jianliao and Tianzong. Shoulders include Bingfeng and Qu Yuan. Left and right cross at the shoulders, meeting Dazhui of the Du Meridian. Shi says: Paraspinal muscles are Lv; the two angles above Lv are the shoulder joint; the flat bone below is the scapula, i.e., shoulder bone. Jia is pronounced 'jia'.) enters the Supraclavicular Fossa to network the Heart, (Descending from Quepen through the chest to Danzhong to network the Heart; Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior pairs.) follows the pharynx, descends through the diaphragm, reaches the Stomach to belong to the Small Intestine; (From below Quepen, following the pharynx, descending through the diaphragm, reaching the Stomach to descend, belonging to the Small Intestine at the level two cun above the umbilicus; this is the internal course of this meridian.) Its branch arises from the Supraclavicular Fossa, follows the neck to the cheek, reaches the outer canthus, and enters the ear; (External branch: Exiting Quepen, following Tianchuang in the neck, ascending to Tianrong behind the cheek, entering the Ear via Quan Gu to Tinggong point. Hand-Taiyang Meridian ends here. Zi is pronounced 'zi'.) Another branch diverges from the cheek, ascends to the nose, reaches the inner canthus, and obliquely networks the zygoma. (Below the eye is . Inner corner is inner canthus. Zygoma is the zygomatic bone and Zangu point. Hand-Taiyang intersects at the inner canthus here to connect to the Foot-Taiyang Meridian. Zhuo is pronounced 'zhuo'. Quan is pronounced 'quan'.)
The Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang originates at the inner canthus. (Bladder belongs to Foot-Taiyang. Originating at Jingming in the inner canthus.) Ascends to the forehead and crosses the vertex; (Ascending from Zanzhu to the forehead, passing Qucha, Wuchu, etc., diagonally from Luoque to Baihui at the vertex.) Its branch arises from the vertex to the supra-auricular angle; (Branch: From Baihui laterally to the supra-auricular angle, passing Quabin, Lvgu, Tianchong, Fu Bai, Qiaoyin, and Wanggu of the Foot-Shaoyang Meridian; thus, these six points are intersections of Foot-Taiyang and Foot-Shaoyang.) Its direct pathway enters from the vertex to network the brain, (From Baihui, passing Tongtian, Luoque, Yuzhen, entering the brain.) emerges again, diverges downward to the nape, follows the medial shoulder blade, flanks the spine to reach the waist, (Emerging from the brain, diverging down the nape, meeting Dazhui and Daodao of the Du Meridian at Tianzhu, then dividing into four rows descending medially along the shoulder blades. This section describes the two inner rows, flanking the spine, 1.5 cun apart, passing Dazhu, Fengmen, and organ Shu points to the waist. Central spinal bone is Spine. Upper hip bone is Waist. Bo is pronounced 'bo'.) enters along the paraspinal muscles, networks the Kidney, and belongs to the Bladder; (From the waist into the paraspinal muscles, networking the Kidney, anteriorly belonging to the Bladder; Kidney and Bladder are exterior-interior pairs. Paraspinal muscles are Lv. Lv is pronounced 'lv'.) Its branch arises from the waist, descends flanking the spine through the buttocks, enters the popliteal fossa; (Descending from the waist along the hip bone flanking the spine, passing Si points, through Huiyang of the buttocks, descending Chengfu, Yinmen, Fuliu, Weiyang, entering Weizhong of the popliteal fossa. Large flesh beside the sacrum is Buttock. Posterior knee bend is . Tun is pronounced 'tun'. Guo is pronounced 'guo'. Liao is pronounced 'liao'.) Another branch arises from the medial shoulder blade, diverges left and right, descends through the scapula, flanks the spine internally, (This branch refers to the two outer rows below Dazhu in the shoulder blade. Passing through the scapula left and right, 3 cun from the spine, passing Fufen, Pohu, Gohuang, descending flanking the spine, passing Zhibian and Bitshu.) passes Bitshu, follows the lateral thigh, merges from the posterior border into the popliteal fossa, (Passing Bitshu, meeting Huantiao of Foot-Shaoyang, following the posterolateral thigh, 1.5 cun from Chengfu, descending to merge with the previous branch entering the popliteal fossa.) descends through the calf, emerges posterior to the lateral malleolus, follows Jinggu, to the lateral side of the little toe. (Descending through the calf passes Heyang, Chengjin, Chengshan, etc. Emerging posterior to the lateral malleolus passes Kunlun, Pucan, etc. The large bone posterior to the base of the little toe is Jinggu. The lateral tip of the little toe is Zhiyin, where the Foot-Taiyang Meridian ends, intersecting below the little toe to connect to the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian. , is the same as .)
The Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin originates below the little toe, slanting towards the sole. (Kidney belongs to Foot-Shaoyin. Originating below the little toe, slanting to Yongquan in the sole. Xie is synonymous with Xie/Slant.) Emerges below Ran Gu, follows posterior to the medial malleolus, diverges into the heel, (Ran Gu is below the large bone anterior to the medial malleolus. Diverging into the heel posterior to the medial malleolus corresponds to Taixi and Datong.) ascends along the medial calf, emerges at the medial border, (From Fuliu and Jiaoxin, passing Sanyinjiao of Foot-Taiyin, ascending to Zubin in the medial calf, emerging at Yin Gu on the medial border.) ascends to the posterior-medial border of the thigh, pierces the spine to belong to the Kidney and network the Bladder; (Ascending to the posterior-medial border of the thigh, joining Changqiang of the Du Meridian, piercing the spine to belong to the Kidney, anteriorly at Guanyuan and Zhongji to network the Bladder, as they are exterior-interior pairs. Shi says: From Yin Gu ascending the posterior-medial thigh, piercing the spine, meeting Changqiang, returning anteriorly, following Henggu, Dahe, Qixue, Siman, Zhongzhu, Huangshu, belonging to the Kidney left and right of the umbilicus, descending below the umbilicus, passing Guanyuan and Zhongji to network the Bladder.) Its direct pathway ascends from the Kidney, pierces the Liver and Diaphragm, enters the Lung, follows the throat, and flanks the root of the tongue; (Shi says: Direct pathway ascends from Huangshu belonging to the Kidney, following Shangqu, Shiguan, Yindu, Tonggu, piercing the Liver, ascending Youmen through the Diaphragm, passing Bulang into the Lung, following Shenfeng, Lingxu, Shencang, Shufu, and Yu Fu, ascending the throat, merging with Renying, flanking the tongue root to end. I observe: Foot-Shaoyin, according to this chapter and Jingbie/Jingjin chapters, states it travels through the spine interior, ascends to nourish Heart and Lung, and scatters in the chest; only Bone Empty Theory states: Chong Mai originates at Qi Street, runs parallel with Shaoyin, flanks the umbilicus upward, disperses in the chest. Thus, Jia Yi Jing states Yu Fu, Shufu, Shencang, Lingxu, Shenfeng, Bulang are sites of Foot-Shaoyin Qi emission; Youmen, Tonggu, Yindu, Shiguan, Shangqu, Huangshu, Zhongzhu, Siman, Qixue, Dahe, Henggu (11 points) are intersections of Chong Mai and Foot-Shaoyin. Thus Shi's annotation is based on Jia Yi and Tong Ren books, which themselves are based on Bone Empty Theory.) Its branch arises from the Lung, networks
