The heart meridian's qi flows into the chest. (Its branch, from the vicinity of Shencang [Shenmen, HT4], passes through the lung network to connect with the heart and flows into the chest. At this point, the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian ends and connects with the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. The chest is located between the two breasts, also known as Danzhong [Chest Center].)
The Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian originates in the chest. ("Heart Master" refers to that which governs the heart. The heart belongs to the Hand-Shaoyin Meridian, but there is additionally the Hand-Jueyin Meridian, which is the vessel of the pericardium. As stated in the *Xieke* chapter: "The heart is the great master of the five zang and six fu organs." Whenever pathogenic factors invade the heart, they invade the pericardium instead. The pericardium is the vessel of the Heart Master. Its flow, entry, exit, turns, and speed are all like those of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Master meridian. Therefore, it is called the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. The meaning of "chest" is seen above. Hua Shi said: One may ask: Why is the Hand-Jueyin meridian called both "Heart Master" and "Pericardium"? The answer is: The Minister Fire operates by position, while the Sovereign Fire operates by brightness. The Hand-Jueyin meridian acts on behalf of the Sovereign Fire. From the perspective of function, it is called the Hand-Xin Zhong; from the perspective of the meridian name, it is called the Pericardium. One meridian has two names, essentially representing the Minister Fire.) It emerges and attaches to the pericardium, descends through the diaphragm, and successively networks the Sanjiao [Triple Burner]; (The pericardium is the membranous network enveloping the heart. The pericardium serves as the external guard for the heart, and the Sanjiao serves as the external guard for the zang-fu organs, so they are interior-exterior counterparts and interconnect. Other meridians do not use the character "li" [successively traverse], only this one does, likely referring to the upper, middle, and lower sections. Upper refers to Danzhong, middle refers to Zhongwan, and lower refers to below the umbilicus. Thus, the Renmai point Yinjiao [CV7] is the Mu-Alarm point of the Sanjiao. "Jiao" and "Liao" are interchangeable.) Its branch follows the chest, emerges from the hypochondrium, and descends three cun below the axilla. (The upper boundary of the hypochondrium is the axilla. Three cun below the axilla is Tianchi [PC1], where the Hand-Jueyin meridian points begin.) It ascends to reach the axilla, runs along the medial aspect of the arm, passing between the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. (Ascending to reach Tianquan [PC2] in the axilla, it runs along the medial arm between the Hand-Taiyin and Hand-Shaoyin meridians because among the three Hand-Yin meridians, the Jueyin is in the middle.) It enters the elbow center, runs down the forearm between two tendons. (Entering the elbow center is Quze [PC3]. Running down the forearm between the two tendons includes Ximen [PC4], Jianshi [PC5], Neiguan [PC6], and Daling [PC7].) It enters the palm, and follows the index finger to its tip. (Entering the palm is Laogong [PC8]. The tip of the middle finger is Zhongchong [PC9], where the Hand-Jueyin meridian terminates.) Its branch diverges from the palm, follows the ring finger to its tip. (The ring finger is the digit next to the little finger. This branch diverges from Laogong, travels to the tip of the ring finger, and connects with the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian.)
The Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian originates at the tip of the ring finger. (The Sanjiao belongs to the Hand-Shaoyang meridian. It originates at Guanchong [TE1] at the tip of the ring finger.) It ascends out between the ring and little fingers. (These are the points Yemen [TE2] and Zhongzhu [TE3] between the little and ring fingers.) It follows the dorsal wrist, emerging between the two bones of the forearm. (The wrist on the dorsal hand is Yangchi [TE4]. Between the two bones of the forearm are Waiguan [TE5], Zhigou [TE6], etc.) It ascends through the elbow, follows the lateral aspect of the arm, ascends to the shoulder, and crosses behind the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. (Ascending through the elbow at Tianjing [TE10], following the lateral arm, it runs anterior to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and posterior to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, passing Qinglengyuan [TE11], Xiaoluo [TE12], and Huizong [TE14], meeting at the shoulder, passing Jianjing [GB21] of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian, and crossing behind the Foot-Shaoyang meridian from Tianliao [TE15].) It enters the Supraclavicular Fossa (Quepen), distributes in the chest center (Danzhong), scatters and networks the pericardium, descends through the diaphragm, and attaches to the Sanjiao. (Internally, it enters the Supraclavicular Fossa, then goes outside the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, descends to distribute in Danzhong, scatters and networks the pericardium, forming an interior-exterior relationship. It descends from the Upper Jiao through the diaphragm, runs along the Middle Jiao, and together with the main channel of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, enters and networks the bladder to regulate the Lower Jiao. Thus, Weiyang [BL39] of the Foot-Taiyang meridian is the auxiliary point of the Lower Sanjiao. See Section 16 later.) Its branch rises from Danzhong, emerges from the Supraclavicular Fossa, ascends to the neck, connects behind the ear, goes straight up to emerge above the upper angle of the ear, then curves down to the cheek and to the infraorbital region. (Externally, the branch ascends from Danzhong, emerges from the Supraclavicular Fossa, follows Tianliao [TE15] to the neck, meets Dazhui [GV14] of the Du Mai, follows Tianyou [TE16], connects behind the ear at Yifeng [TE17], Chiliao [TE18], and Luxi [TE19], emerges above the ear at Jiaosun [TE20], passes Xuanli [GB7] and Hanyan [GB6] of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian, descends to the cheek and infraorbital region, meeting the Zanguan [SI18] area of the Hand-Taiyang meridian. "Zhuo" sounds like "zhuo," referring to the area under the eye.) Another branch enters the ear from behind the ear, exits to the front of the ear, passes anterior to the Guest Master (Kemaren) point, crosses the cheek, and reaches the outer canthus of the eye. (This branch enters the ear from Yifeng [TE17] behind the ear, passes Tinggong [SI19] of the Hand-Taiyang meridian, exits to the front of the ear at Ermen [TE21], passes Kemaren [GB2] of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian, crosses the cheek, follows He'liao [TE22], ascends to Sizhukong [TE23], reaches the outer canthus, meets Tongziliao [GB1], where the Hand-Shaoyang meridian terminates and connects with the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian.)
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian originates at the outer canthus of the eye. (The Gallbladder belongs to the Foot-Shaoyang meridian. It originates at Tongziliao [GB1] at the outer canthus. The outer corner of the eye is called Ruishi [outer canthus].) It ascends to reach the frontal angle, descends behind the ear. (From the outer canthus, via Tinghui [GB2] and Kemaren [GB2], it ascends to the frontal angle, follows Hanyan [GB6], descends to Xuanlu [GB5] and Xuanli [GB7], enters Qubin [GB7] and Lvgu [GB8] from the hairline above the ear, passes Jiaosun [TE20] of the Hand-Shaoyang meridian externally, descends behind the ear, running through Tianchong [GB9], Fu Bai [GB10], Qiaoyin [GB9/GB11 context implies GB9 or nearby, actually Qiaoyin is GB9, Wangu is GB12], Wangu [GB12], then folds back up from Wangu, follows Benshen [GB13], advances to Yangbai [GB14], folds inward and ascends, follows Linqi [GB15], Mucuang [GB16], Zhengying [GB17], Chengling [GB18], Naokong [GB19], and descends from Fengchi [GB20].) It follows the neck anterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, reaches the shoulder, crosses behind the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, and enters the Supraclavicular Fossa. (From Fengchi [GB20] along the neck, passing Tianyou [TE16] of the Hand-Shaoyang meridian, running anterior to the Shaoyang meridian, descending to the shoulder, following Jianjing [GB21], crossing behind the Hand-Shaoyang meridian, passing Dazhui [GV14], meeting Bingfeng [SI12] of the Hand-Taiyang meridian, and entering anteriorly outside the Supraclavicular Fossa of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.) Its branch enters the ear from behind the ear, exits to the front of the ear, and reaches behind the outer canthus. (This branch from the temporal region behind the ear passes Yifeng [TE17] of the Hand-Shaoyang meridian, enters the ear, passes Tinggong [SI19] of the Hand-Taiyang meridian, exits to the front of the ear, returns from Tinghui [GB2] to the area behind the outer canthus Tongziliao [GB1].) Another branch diverges from the outer canthus, descends to Daying [ST4], merges with the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, and reaches Jiache [ST6]. (This branch diverges from the outer canthus Tongziliao [GB1], descends beside the Foot-Yangming Daying [ST4], and reaches Jiache [ST6] via Sizhukong [TE23] and Heliao [TE22] of the Hand-Shaoyang meridian.) It descends to add to Jiache [ST6], descends to the neck merging with the Supraclavicular Fossa. (The part descending to the Foot-Yangming merges at Xiaguan [ST7], then descends from Jiache [ST6] to the neck, following the anterior aspect of this meridian, merging with the part that entered the Supraclavicular Fossa earlier, to descend into the chest.) It descends into the chest, pierces the diaphragm, networks the Liver, and attaches to the Gallbladder. It follows the interior of the hypochondrium, emerges at Qichuang (Qichong ST30 context implies pathway near Qi Street), circles the pubic hair margin, and transversely enters the hip joint. (Internally, it descends from the Supraclavicular Fossa into the chest, piercing the diaphragm at the level of Tianchi [PC1] of the Hand-Jueyin meridian, networking the Liver at Qimen [LR14] of the Foot-Jueyin meridian, attaching to the Gallbladder at Riyue [GB24] of this meridian, forming an interior-exterior relationship. It then follows the hypochondrium interior, descends from Zhangmen [LR13] of the Foot-Jueyin meridian, emerges at Qichong [ST30] of the Foot-Yangming meridian, circles the pubic hair margin, merges with the Foot-Jueyin meridian, and transversely enters the Ring Jump (Huantiao [GB30]) of the hip joint.) Its direct branch descends from the Supraclavicular Fossa to the axilla, follows the chest passing the lateral costal margin, and descends to merge with the hip joint. (Directly descending externally, it descends from the Supraclavicular Fossa to the axilla, follows the chest, passes Yuanye [GB9], Zhejin [GB23], Riyue [GB24], crosses the lateral costal margin, follows Jingmen [GB25], Daipmai [GB26], etc., descends, enters Juliao [GB33] from the Foot-Taiyang Shangliao [BL31], Zhongliao [BL32], and Xialiao [BL34] areas, and merges with the part that entered the hip joint earlier.) It descends along the lateral thigh, emerges at the lateral knee, descends anterior to the lateral fibular head. (Lateral thigh is Biyang. The fibular head refers to the high bones on both sides below the knee. Running through Biyang between the Taiyang and Yangming meridians, it passes Zhongdu [GB34], Yangguan [GB33? Note: Text says Yangguan, usually GB33 is Yangguan, GB34 is Yanglingquan. Text says "out lateral knee", likely referring to Yanglingquan area], emerges at the lateral knee, descends anterior to the lateral fibular head, starting from Yanglingquan [GB34] and including Yangjiao [GB35].) It goes straight down to the end of Juegu (Fibula Head/Tip), descends to emerge anterior to the lateral malleolus, follows the dorsum of the foot, and enters between the fourth and fifth toes. (The bone junction above the lateral malleolus is called Juegu. The end of Juegu is Yangfu [GB38]. Descending through Xuanzhong [GB39], following Quxu [GB40] and Zulinqi [GB41] on the dorsum of the foot, it enters between the fourth and fifth toes, reaching Qiaoyin [GB44], where the Foot-Shaoyang meridian terminates.) Its branch diverges from the dorsum of the foot, enters between the big toe, follows the medial side of the first metatarsal bone to emerge at its tip, returns to penetrate the nail bed, and emerges at the trichiasis (hair tuft). (The bone gap after the proximal phalanx of the big toe and second toe is called Qigu. The space two segments behind the big toe nail is called Sanmao. This branch diverges from the dorsum of the foot, enters the big toe, follows the medial Qigu, emerges at the tip of the big toe, returns to penetrate the nail bed, emerges at Sanmao, and connects with the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.)
The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian originates at the tuft of hair on the big toe. (The Liver belongs to the Foot-Jueyin meridian. It originates at the big toe of the foot, one cun posterior to the transverse crease of the nail, at the hair tuft Dazhun [LR1]. The hair tuft is what was referred to as Sanmao above.) It ascends along the medial border of the dorsum of the foot, one cun anterior to the medial malleolus. (The medial border of the dorsum of the foot contains Xingjian [LR2] and Taichong [LR3]. One cun anterior to the medial malleolus is Zhongfeng [LR4].) Ascending eight cun above the ankle, it crosses behind the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and ascends along the medial aspect of the leg. (Ascending past Sanyinjiao [SP6] of the Foot-Taiyin meridian, passing Ligou [LR5] and Zhongdu [LR6], ascending one more cun, it crosses behind the Foot-Taiyin meridian, ascends along the medial leg to Xiguan [LR7] and Ququan [LR8].) It follows the medial thigh, enters the pubic hair region, and passes the genitalia. (Medial thigh is Guyin. Following the medial thigh through Yinbao [LR9], Wuli [LR10], Yinlian [LR11], it meets Chongmen [SP12] and Fushe [SP13] of the Foot-Taiyin meridian, enters the pubic hair region at Jimai [LR12], intersects left and right, surrounds the genitalia, and meets Qugu [CV2] of the Ren Mai.) It reaches the lower abdomen, flanks the stomach, attaches to the Liver, and networks the Gallbladder. (Ascending from the yin region into the lower abdomen, it meets Zhongji [CV3] and Guanyuan [CV4] of the Ren Mai, follows Zhangmen [LR13] to Qimen [LR14], flanking the stomach, descending to Riyue [GB24] of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian to network the Gallbladder, as the Liver and Gallbladder are interior-exterior counterparts.) It pierces the diaphragm, distributes in the hypochondrium. (Ascending from Qimen [LR14] through the diaphragm, running outside Shidou [SP15] of the Foot-Taiyin meridian and inside Dabao [SP21], it distributes in the hypochondrium, ascending below Yuanye [GB24] of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian and Yunmen [LU2] of the Hand-Taiyin meridian, where the Foot-Jueyin meridian points end.) It follows the posterior aspect of the throat, ascends into the nasopharynx (Hangsang), connects with the optic nerve system (Muxi), ascends to emerge from the forehead, and meets the Du Mai at the vertex. (Nasopharynx is Hangsang. The deep interior of the eye is the Muxi. Internally ascending, from the hypochondrium, outside the Renying [ST9] of the Foot-Yangming meridian, it follows the posterior throat into Hangsang, running outside Daying [ST4], Dicang [ST4], Sibai [ST2] of the Foot-Yangming meridian, internally connecting the Muxi, ascending outside Yangbai [GB14] of the Foot-Shaoyang meridian and inside Linqi [GB15], meeting the Du Mai at Baihui [GV20] at the vertex.) Its branch descends from the Muxi to the interior of the cheek, circling the inner lips. (This branch descends from the Muxi area, outside the Ren Mai and inside this meridian, descends to the cheek interior, crossing and circling inside the lips.) Another branch diverges from the Liver, pierces the diaphragm, and ascends to pour into the Lungs. (Another branch diverges from Qimen [LR14] where it attaches to the Liver, running outside Shidou [SP15] of the Foot-Taiyin meridian and inside this meridian, diverges to pierce the diaphragm, ascends to pour into the Lungs, descends to the Middle Jiao, flanks Zhongwan [CV12], and reconnects with the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, completing one cycle of the twelve meridians, ending and beginning again.)
