Pulse patterns for cough: a floating pulse indicates wind, a tight pulse indicates cold, a surging and rapid pulse indicates heat, and a soft and thin pulse indicates dampness. A choppy and difficult pulse at the Cun (inch) and Guan (middle) positions, combined with a wiry and tight pulse at the Chi (cubit) position, indicates Yin deficiency due to excessive sexual activity. A soft and large pulse at the right Guan position indicates spleen injury from dietary indiscretion. A rapid and wiry pulse at the left Guan position indicates liver damage from extreme fatigue. A slow and choppy pulse indicates lung cold; a surging and slippery pulse indicates abundant phlegm; a wiry and choppy pulse indicates blood deficiency. A pulse emerging at the Yuji area indicates an adverse condition characterized by asthma and urgent breathing. A slightly urgent lung pulse with coughing and spitting of blood, where the pulse is either deep or floating and the voice is not hoarse, is treatable; however, a surging and rapid pulse, emaciated body, red face, declining kidney Qi, and hoarseness indicate a difficult-to-treat condition. Hoarseness caused by phlegm obstructing the lung collaterals is an exception. Sudden severe cough preventing lying down indicates lung distension, which is treatable; chronic cough preventing lying on the left side indicates liver damage; inability to lie on the right side indicates lung damage, both of which are difficult to treat. Chronic cough with a weak pulse suggests survival; a solid, large, and rapid pulse suggests death. In coughing with emaciation, a firm and large pulse suggests death; a deep, tight, and hidden pulse suggests death; a straight floating pulse is treatable; a soft floating pulse is easily treatable. Cough with a deficient pulse implies stomach suffering due to fluid retention (Zhi Yin) in the chest.
