Ms. Li, of advanced age, suffers from blood and qi deficiency, with the essence of the Kidney unable to ascend to nourish the eyes. She often feels as if black objects are obscuring her vision; when bowing her head, it is like black ash swirling around. The left pulse is short and choppy (Duan Se), indicating a deficiency of Liver and Kidney Yin, leading to the loss of constriction in the pupil (Tong Shen). Following the principle of Dong Yuan's Mingmu Dihuang Wan, she was prescribed prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang), Lycium Fruit (Qi Zi), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), Poria (Fu Shen), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui), Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi), Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu), and White Peony Root (Bai Shao), processed into honeyed pills. She recovered subsequently.
A child presented with night fever and frequent urination, facial edema, photophobia, and slight yellowing of the sclera. This indicates Spleen deficiency failing to control, allowing Wind-Heat of the Liver channel to invade. He was treated with Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren), Moutan Bark (Dan Pi), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Gardenia Fruit (Shan Zhi), Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Gou Teng), Chrysanthemum Flower (Gan Ju), Licorice Root (Gan Cao), and Poria (Fu Shen). After two doses, he sweated slightly, the fever subsided, and urination decreased. Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) and Bai Shao (White Peony Root) were added. After several more doses, all symptoms resolved.
A female relative of the same clan had suffered from red eyes for a long time. Postpartum depression and anger caused severe redness and swelling, making it difficult to open the eyes. Decoctions for clearing fire and resolving stagnation were ineffective. Her pulse indicated weak Spleen and strong Liver. It was proposed to strengthen the Earth (Spleen) to control Wood (Liver), which would cure the eye disease. She was given Amomum Fruit (Sha Ren), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), White Poria (Bai Fu Ling), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Bai Zhu), Gastrodia Tuber (Tian Ma), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao), Chrysanthemum Flower (Gan Ju), Ligusticum Wallichii Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Gardenia Fruit (Shan Zhi), and Cassia Seed (Cao Jue Ming), with dates. Externally, a wash was prepared using Silkworm Frass (Can Sha), Prunella Vulgaris Spikes (Xia Ku Cao), Winter Mulberry Leaves (Dong Sang Ye), and Chrysanthemum Leaves, decocted for fumigation and washing. After several treatments, the illness disappeared almost completely.
Ms. Ma had long-term blurriness in the left eye and new opacity in the right eye. After taking bitter-cold ophthalmic medicines, she became sensitive to cold and lost appetite, with a very faint pulse barely perceptible. This indicates Yang deficiency in old age, with the Divine Water (Shen Shui) nearing exhaustion. Only by nourishing the Divine Paste can the right eye recover. She was prescribed Codonopsis Radix (Dang Shen), Lycium Fruit (Qi Zi), Deer Antler Glue (Lu Jiao Jiao), Astragalus Complanatus Seed (Sha Yuan Zi), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui), Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome (Yu Zhu), Mulberry Leaf (Sang Ye), and Longan Aril (Long Yan). After taking Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) for two doses, she continued with the previous prescription plus Psoralea Fruit (Gu Zhi) and Walnut Kernel. After dozens of doses, her right eye returned to normal.
Ms. Zhang had large, red eyes with a reddish pulse, and a floating membrane gradually invading the Wind Wheel (cornea). According to theory, the outer canthus belongs to the Heart as Minister Fire, and the Wind Wheel belongs to the Liver as Wind-Wood. "The son makes the mother full"; when Fire moves, Wind arises. Therefore, it is appropriate to suppress Fire to dissipate Wind. She was treated with Equisetum Hiemale Stem (Mu Zei) and Centipeda Flower (Gu Jing Cao) to eliminate the membrane, Red Peony Root (Chi Shao) and Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao) to purge Fire, Aurantium Fruit (Zhi Ke) and Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) to unblock the Yuan Fu, Chrysanthemum Flower (Gan Ju) to scatter Wind, and Longan Aril (Long Yan) to guide the medicine to the eyes. After four doses, everything cleared completely.
Mr. Wang suffered from painful swelling of both eyes at the beginning of spring, unable to open them. Ten days later, the sclera turned entirely red and invaded the upper eyelid, wrapped in a white membrane, rendering him blind. Medications for dispersing Wind-Fire and reducing floating opacities were ineffective. Further treatment with needle pricking and topical medication worsened the condition. His pulse was weak and rapid. I stated that previous methods were incorrect; this is due to damage to the Liver and Kidney, with Deficient Fire ascending. He was given a large dose of Qiju Dihuang Wan (Lycium and Chrysanthemum Rehmannia Pill) decocted and taken orally. Within a few days, his vision returned, and the membrane gradually dissipated.
Mr. Li: When Essence scatters, vision becomes double; when Essence is deficient, vision dims. Now, after illness without recovery, further damage to Kidney Yin occurred. The pulse was empty and large, accompanied by head tremors and vertigo, red eyes, visual obstruction from internal cataracts, irritability, and insomnia. Treatment should tonify Kan (Water/Kidney) to calm Li (Fire/Heart); cold and purgative herbs must be strictly avoided. Following Mr. Dong Yuan's method, he was prescribed Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang), Cuscuta Seed (Qusheng Zi - likely Tu Si Zi), Lycium Fruit (Gou Qi Zi), Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi), Poria (Fu Shen), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Sour Jujube Seed (Suan Zao Ren), Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui), and Longan Aril (Long Yan Rou). After several doses, his vision recovered, and the obstruction cleared.
