In cases of cholera with vomiting and diarrhea during pregnancy, accompanied by mental restlessness and abdominal pain, Liuhe Tang (Six-Harmony Decoction) is appropriate.
Liuhe Tang (Six-Harmony Decoction)
Huoxiang (Agastache Herba), Sharen (Amomi Fructus) (each 0.5 qian); Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fuling (Poria), Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.4 qian); Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus) (each 1 qian); Bian Dou (Dolichos Lablab Seed) (2 qian); Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (10 grains); Xiaqu (Mylabris Fermented Flour) (0.6 fen); Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices); Zao (Jujubae Fructus) (2 pieces); Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia).
In cases of dysentery with red and white discharge during pregnancy, this condition arises from cold and raw food damaging the Spleen, and stagnation damaging the Stomach, leading to interference between Damp-Heat and stasis of Qi and Blood. If Damp-Heat damages the Qi level, white discharge is passed; if it damages the Blood level, red discharge is passed. Accompanied by borborygmus and tenesmus (feeling of incomplete evacuation), with frequent dysenteric stools, Jianglian Wan (Ginger-Coptis Pill) should be taken urgently. If there is abdominal pain and a sensation of urgency and fullness in the chest/heart region, Danggui Shaoyao Tang (Angelica Sinensis and White Peony Root Decoction) is suitable, or Guishao Tang (Angelica and White Peony Decoction) is even better.
Jianglian Wan (Ginger-Coptis Pill)
Chuan Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 liang); Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) (5 qian, stir-fried); Ruxiang (Olibanum) (3 qian, ground separately).
Grind all into powder, add salt, three bayberries (Myrica rubra), and a little vinegar. Use glutinous rice paste as a binder to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take forty pills per dose. For white dysentery, take with light ginger decoction. For red dysentery, take with licorice decoction. For mixed red and white dysentery, take with licorice and ginger decoction.
Note: For red dysentery, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) can be added. For white dysentery with abdominal pain, Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) can be added. Ginger-processed Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) is also indispensable. One should not rigidly adhere to the notion that red dysentery belongs to Heat and white dysentery belongs to Cold, nor mechanically restrict administration to ginger or licorice decoctions for delivery.
Danggui Shaoyao Tang (Angelica Sinensis and White Peony Root Decoction)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, flour-stir-fried), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) (each 1 qian); Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (0.8 fen); Dongpi (Phellodendri Cortex) (0.6 fen); Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (0.3 fen); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.4 fen); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 qian).
Decoct in water and take orally. Avoid cold and raw foods.
Guishao Tang (Angelica and White Peony Decoction)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 qian); Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, half raw half stir-fried) (2 qian); Laifuzi (Raphani Semen) (stir-fried and ground, 2 qian); Guang Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (0.8 fen); Binglang (Arecae Semen) (0.7 fen); Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) (0.8 fen); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 fen); Jing Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen) (1.5 qian); Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus, sugar-stir-fried) (1.5 qian).
For white dysentery, add fresh ginger. For red dysentery, add white sugar, decoct and take. If the pathogenic accumulation has been cleared but the intestines are weak and diarrhea persists, only then use Chuanlian Wan (Coptis Pill), possibly combined with Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), etc. For heat-type dysentery at the initial stage, Machixian (Portulacae Herba) alone can be used, without restriction on quantity, decocted and drunk as tea, which is also effective. This Machixian (Portulacae Herba) has green leaves, red stems, white roots, yellow flowers, and black seeds, named Wufang Cao (Five-Direction Herb) or WuXing Cao (Five-Elements Herb), possessing miraculous efficacy, and can be used for all types of dysentery.
