A pulse that feels large in shape but weak upon pressure indicates deficiency and damage (Xu Sun). A floating, large, and weak pulse indicates Yang deficiency. A fine, rapid, and weak pulse indicates Yin deficiency. A floating, soft, and weak pulse at the Cun position (distal) indicates Upper Jiao deficiency. A short, choppy, and faint pulse at the Chi position (proximal) indicates Lower Jiao deficiency. A short, choppy, and uneven pulse at the left Chi position indicates Blood deficiency. A deep and faint pulse at the right Cun position indicates Qi deficiency. A fine and minute pulse in all six positions is associated with night sweats. A fine and rapid pulse in all six positions is associated with tidal fever. A wiry and large pulse at the right Guan position (middle) indicates Spleen deficiency. Additionally, a fine, minute, thread-like pulse at the man's right Chi position indicates Yang decline and exhaustion of essence. A fine, minute, thread-like pulse at the woman's left Chi position indicates Yin decline and amenorrhea. These conditions are considered difficult to treat.
[Symptoms]
According to *Yi Zong Ji Cheng*: Deficiency and damage syndromes arise from excessive sexual activity, unregulated emotions of joy and anger, irregular daily routines, improper diet, and labor injuries, all of which deplete Qi and Blood. Generally, when Qi declines, ministerial fire flares up; when fire flares, it overacts on Spleen Earth, causing Stomach Qi to scatter. This prevents the nourishment of Ying (Nutritive) Qi and the hundred vessels, as well as the irrigation of Zang-Fu organs and protection of the whole body. Thus, deficiency and damage syndromes arise. Symptoms include vexatious pain in the hundred vessels, lower back pain and weak legs, chest fullness and shortness of breath, mental restlessness, tinnitus and vertigo, cough, alternating chills and fever, spontaneous sweating and night sweats, spermatorrhea and leukorrhea, undigested food diarrhea, loss of appetite, lack of flavor in food, failure to gain muscle mass, or palpitations during sleep, afternoon fever, fatigue, and weakness. In women, symptoms include metrorrhagia and metrostaxis (Beng Lou), leukorrhea, amenorrhea, cough, hemoptysis, and fever. All these are signs of deficiency and damage.
[Treatment Principles]
Classics state: "Deficient conditions require tonification; damaged conditions require replenishment." It also states: "For insufficiency of form, warm with Qi-tonifying herbs such as Ren Shen (Ginseng), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala), Lu Rong (Deer Antler Velvet), and Fu Zi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata); for insufficiency of essence, tonify with substance-rich herbs such as Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue) and Di Huang (Rehmannia Root)." For Qi deficiency, tonify Qi using Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction); for Blood deficiency, tonify Blood using Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction); for both Qi and Blood deficiency, use Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonic Decoction). For phlegm-cough, clear the Lung using Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), and Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb). For Yin deficiency with fever, nourish Yin and descend fire using Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), and Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii). Apply with careful consideration.

**Another Formula: Da Zao Wan (Great Creation Pill)**: Treats various deficiencies and damages in men and women, Five Labors and Seven Injuries. This follows the principle of "tonifying deficiency with similar forms." Zi He Che (Placenta Hominis), also known as Hun Dun Pi (Chaos Skin), is the placenta. The fetus is in the womb, connected by the umbilical cord, receiving nourishment from the womb. The womb connects to the mother's waist, receiving maternal Yin energy. Daoist classics state: Father's essence and Mother's blood combine to form life, a product of creation, containing True Yuan Qi. Humans are born from this; using it to tonify humans surpasses herbs, grasses, metals, and stones. Ancient formulas used it for severe consumptive diseases, rightly so. However, it is not commonly available, and some may have reservations, hence its obscurity. My cousin was extremely weak, only skin and bones, with sallow complexion. Using this herb combined with others to form Da Zao Wan, he took less than two doses and his appearance transformed miraculously, later fathering four sons. A sixty-year-old woman, frail and ill, took this pill with blood-tonifying herbs and became strong. She subsequently prepared and consumed Zi He Che herself, about one hundred doses, living to ninety, appearing younger than middle-aged. She distributed the medicine to relatives, helping many. A person who lost their voice after severe illness regained it shortly after taking this medicine. A person unable to walk walked again after six months of taking it. This medicine is especially wonderful for women. Is it because Zi He Che originates from the human body and follows its own kind? For women with irregular menstruation, miscarriage, difficult labor, or having more daughters than sons, if both husband and wife take it, pregnancies are numerous. There are other preparation methods. Using only Zi He Che as a pill treats "Loss of Heart Wind" and Ge Syndrome (diaphragmatic obstruction) effectively. For those near death, Zi He Che washed twice with colostrum, made into pills, can extend life by two to three days with one dose. Its tonifying power is exquisite, working perfectly every time, often beyond expectation. Long-term use brings sharp hearing and vision, black hair, longevity, and powers rivaling creation, far exceeding minor tonification. Hence the name Da Zao Wan. The combination with other herbs has profound logic, detailed below.
Zi He Che (Placenta Hominis): One piece. Men should use female placentas, women male placentas. Primipara placentas are best; vigorous multipara placentas are also usable. Wash with rice water, dry on new tiles.
Bai Gui Ban (Testudo Plastrum): Use large pieces, preferably from turtles that died naturally of old age. Soak in child's urine for 30 days, fry with su (clarified butter) until yellow. Net weight 2 liang. This herb greatly tonifies Yin and benefits the Heart.
Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark): Stir-fry with salt and wine until brown. Net weight 1.5 liang. Evil fire agitates but does not generate. To tonify with Yang herbs without balancing Yin is harmful. This herb nourishes Kidney Water. Paired with previous herbs, it is the best for nourishing Yin and tonifying the Kidney. As an assistant to Zi He Che, is it not appropriate?
Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root): Remove rhizome, soak in wine, dry. Net weight 1.3 liang. This guides herbs downward to the lower body. Combined with the previous four, it enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Ancient formula adding Chen Pi is named Zi Shen Wan (Nourish Kidney Pill); adding Zi He Che is named Bu Tian Wan (Tonify Heaven Pill).
Di Huang (Rehmannia Root): Use plump, heavy ones sinking in water, preferably from Huaiqing. Steam, cook, dry. Weight 2.5 liang. Add Sha Ren (Amomum Fruit) powder (0.6 liang) and Bai Fu Ling (2 liang). Form into a block, wrap in thin silk, place in silver jar, boil in good wine seven times. Remove Sha Ren and Fu Ling, keep only Di Huang. Di Huang, with Sha Ren, Fu Ling, and Huang Bo, enters the Shaoyin Kidney. These four herbs are named Tian Yi Sheng Shui Wan (Heaven One Generates Water Pill), kept secret. If no silver jar, use clay.
Tian Men Dong (Asparagus Tuber): Remove heart, 1.2 liang.
Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Root): Remove heart, 1.2 liang. (Increase in summer).
Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit): Remove stems, 0.7 qian.
Ren Shen (Ginseng): Remove rhizome, 1 liang. The first four herbs enter the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. The two Men Dong protect Lung Qi from fire, direct Lung Qi downward, and generate Kidney source. Their nature is descending, not ascending. With Ren Shen, they tonify and descend. Materia Medica says they promote conception, which is why. Ancient formula adding Sheng Di Huang is named Gu Ben Wan (Solidify Root Pill). The three herbs Mai Dong, Wu Wei Zi, and Ren Shen are named Sheng Mai San (Generate Pulse Powder).
The combination of this formula focuses on tonifying Yuan Qi. Using the first-born placenta is the most vital source of generation and transformation. It tonifies Lung and Kidney meridians. Ren Shen tonifies Qi, Di Huang tonifies Blood, and Zi He Che completes the Great Creation. Herbs must be fresh, authentic, and geographically indicated. Preparation must follow proper methods, otherwise ineffective.
Except for Di Huang, grind other herbs in a wooden mortar. Mix all powders finely. Make pills with wine and rice paste, pounding over a thousand times. Size of Sophora seeds. Take 80-90 pills fasting and before bed, with clear rice soup, ginger soup, plain water, or salted wine. Women add Dang Gui (2 liang), remove Gui Ban. For men/women with deficiency syndromes, remove Ren Shen. For spermatorrhea/leukorrhea and women's red/white leukorrhea, add Mu Li Fen (Oyster Shell Powder) (1.5 liang).
**Another Formula: Ban Long Wan (Spotted Dragon Pill)**: Treats True Yin deficiency and elderly weakness, suitable for regular use.
Ingredients: Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue, 10 liang), Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Frost, 10 liang), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, peeled, 5 liang), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed, shelled, stir-fried, 10 liang), Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta Seed, soaked in wine, steamed, pounded into cake, dried, 10 liang), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 10 liang, Huaiqing plump, boiled in wine and mashed), Bu Gu Zhi (Psoralea Fruit, stir-fried, 5 liang).
Administration: Grind into powder. Melt Lu Jiao Jiao in two large bowls of good wine. Make pills size of Sophora seeds. Take 70 pills initially, gradually increasing to 90. Fasting, with clear rice soup or salted water.
Method for boiling Deer Antler Glue/Frost:
Use three pairs of new deer antlers, weighing 10 jin.
Saw antlers into 2-cun segments. Soak in flowing water for three days, scrubbing off dirt. If no flowing water, soak in a large bowl, changing water three times daily. For every 10 jin of antlers, use 5 liang of yellow wax, 10 liang of Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark), 20 liang of Chu Shi Zi (Cudrania Fruit), and 40 bowls of fresh water. Place in a clay jar. Burn 120 jin of mulberry firewood. Boil for three days and nights. Add hot water as needed, ensuring antlers remain submerged. After three days, remove, squeeze juice through fine cloth. Reduce antler juice over low heat until drops form pearls (glue). Dry remaining antlers and grind into powder (frost).
For extreme deficiency after severe illness: Decoct Ren Shen (1 liang) and Lu Jiao Jiao (0.5 qian). Highly tonifying. Add Dang Gui for postpartum. Add Bai Fu Ling for elderly.
Alternative method: Process 10 jin of antlers as above. Place in lead jar, submerge in pot 5-6 cun below rim. Seal tightly. Boil with mulberry fire for seven days. Add hot water daily. After seven days, filter residue. Set clear liquid aside. Add Ren Shen (10 liang) and Gansu Gou Qi (Goji Berry) (20 liang) with 20 bowls of water. Boil until nearly dry. Squeeze residue, pound residue, add 15 bowls of water, boil dry, filter. Combine juices with deer antler juice. Slowly reduce over white charcoal fire until drops form pearls. Store in porcelain jar. Take 1-2 qian fasting with plain water. Extremely effective for consumptive disease.
