The clinical manifestations of Slow Spleen Wind (Man Pi Feng) include a bluish complexion, sweating on the forehead, a short tongue with the head drooping, eyes closed and difficult to open, shaking the head and sticking out the tongue during sleep, frequent vomiting of foul-smelling fluids, locked jaw with teeth grinding, slight twitching of the hands and feet that cannot be voluntarily controlled, or a cold body or only cold limbs while the trunk remains warm. The pulse is deep and faint. This indicates extreme excess of Yin Qi and extreme deficiency of Stomach Qi. Only one or two out of ten cases can be saved. This condition arises from Slow Convulsion (Man Jing), where vomiting and diarrhea damage the Spleen Qi. The disease has progressed to an extreme stage, returning to deficiency, specifically affecting the Spleen; hence it is called Spleen Wind. At this stage, there is no wind to dispel, nor is there convulsion to treat; there are merely phlegm-fluids stagnating in the Spleen and alternating deficient heat. The closed eyes result from Spleen fatigue and Qi deficiency, causing the spirit and consciousness to become dull due to stagnant phlegm-fluids.
However, "Slow Spleen" is also known as "Deficient Wind." After vomiting or diarrhea in children, if the complexion becomes sallow and deficient, fever arises from deficiency, and symptoms such as head shaking, oblique gaze, drowsiness, forehead sweating, sticky body sweat, and a low, thin, anxious voice appear, these constitute Spleen Wind. It does not necessarily develop through the transmission of Acute or Slow Convulsions; this distinction must be recognized. Furthermore, why is the Spleen mentioned but not the Stomach in describing Slow Spleen? The Stomach belongs to the Fu organs and is Yang, whereas the Spleen is a Zang organ and Yin. Diseases in the Fu organs often resolve spontaneously, while diseases in the Zang organs require treatment. Children possess pure Yang Qi; disease in the Fu organs is a favorable progression, while in the Zang organs, it is unfavorable. Ancient physicians focused on treating the Zang organs, not the Fu organs. Additionally, the Kidney is inherently prone to deficiency and should not be treated with purgatives. If the Kidneys are affected, one should clear the Heart and Lung, as the Heart and Kidney share a relationship of Water-Fire mutual interaction (Ji Ji), and the Lung and Kidney have a Mother-Child relationship. No herbs entering the Kidney or general tonics should be used. Slow Spleen Wind is typically transmitted via vomiting, diarrhea, accumulation, or dysentery. The symptoms change rapidly, and deficiency worsens quickly. Treatment must be gradual and mild, without expectation of rapid cure. Herbs should be gentle to regulate the Spleen and nourish the Stomach, avoiding excessive dosage. Qian Yi (Qian Shi) created Huang Tu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction) to use Earth to overcome Water, allowing Wood to achieve balance, thereby stopping wind naturally, based on the principle that Spleen Earth is the root. The general treatment principle is to generate Stomach Qi and restore Yang Qi. If the eyes are half-open and half-closed, and the hands and feet are not cold, the condition remains in the stage of Slow Convulsion, so Yang-restoring herbs should not be used. Even if it has entered the Slow Spleen stage but Yang Qi is not severely depleted, sulfur and Aconite (Fuzi) should not be used immediately. Once the hands and feet gradually warm up, use Xing Pi San (Awaken the Spleen Powder) for regulation.
Zeng Shirong (Zeng Shi) used Qing Jin Dan (Green Gold Pill) and Tian Ma Yin (Gastrodia Drink) administered orally, or Liu Zhu San (Six Pillars Powder) and Gu Zhen Tang (Secure the True Decoction).
[Qian Shi's Formulas]
Gua Lou Tang (Trichosanthes Decoction)
Gua Lou (2 qian) Bai Gan Sui (powder, 1 qian)
Stir-fry both together over slow fire until scorched yellow, then grind evenly. Take one "zi" dose each time, mixed with Moschus (Shexiang), Mentha (Bohe), and decocted water.
This Gua Lou Tang is Qian Shi's method for treating Slow Convulsion, suitable for patients with a forceful pulse. It is used because damp-phlegm accumulates in the diaphragm, preventing the release of wind-fire, leading to coldness. Gua Lou Tang forcibly removes damp-phlegm, allowing wind-fire to expand, warming the body and stopping convulsions. For those with a weak pulse, it is contraindicated; instead, Spleen-tonifying herbs or Wen Bai Wan (Warm White Pills) and Qiang Huo Gao (Notopterygium Paste) should be used.
Qing Zhou Bai Wan Zi (Qingzhou White Pills) Treats pediatric convulsions and various wind disorders in adults.

Above, Yan Xiao Zhong followed Qian Shi's method for Slow Convulsion, suitable for weak pulses. Using Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi combined with Yi Gong San, Qiang Huo Gao, Wen Bai Wan, Diao Teng Yin Zi often yields survival from critical states.
[Tang Shi's Method]
For vomiting/diarrhea leading to Deficient Wind Slow Spleen, first use Duo Ming San and Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi powder, decoct to thick paste, mix with honey, and control expulsion of phlegm. Then administer wind-dispelling and Spleen-awakening herbs.
Duo Ming San (See General Treatment for Acute/Slow Convulsion below.)
Zhi Xu Feng Ba Xian San For excess wind.
Bai Tian Ma Bai Fu Zi Hua She Rou Fang Feng Nan Xing Ban Xia Dong Gua Zi Quan Xie (equal parts) Add Chuan Wu
Cut into pieces. Take 1 qian with 0.5 cup water, 2 slices ginger, half a date, decoct to 0.2 cups. Take hot. Adding Mint is better.
Xing Pi San For drowsiness/exhaustion.
Bai Zhu Ren Shen Gan Cao Ju Hong Fu Ling Quan Xie (each 0.5 liang) Ban Xia Mu Xiang (each 1 fen) Bai Fu Zi (processed, 4 pieces) Nan Xing (processed, 2 pieces) Chen Cang Mi (200 grains. Alternative: omit Bai Zhu/Ban Xia, add Lian Rou 1 qian)
Grind into powder. Take 1 qian with 0.5 cup water, 2 slices ginger, half a date, decoct to 0.2 cups. Take gradually. Do not take all at once to avoid vomiting.
Niang Ru Fang (Breast-Nourishing Formula)
Ren Shen Mu Xiang Huo Xiang Chen Xiang Ju Pi Shen Qu Mai Ya (equal parts) Ding Xiang (half amount)
Cut into pieces. Take 4 qian with 1 bowl water, 10 slices ginger, 10 Perilla leaves, 3 dates, decoct to half bowl. After the nursing mother eats, she must empty her breasts completely, then take the medicine. Lie supine briefly to let medicine enter milk channels, then let infant suckle a few times. Do not overfeed. This is an excellent method. If vomiting stops for one day, urgently stop wind with Ba Xian San. After two days, use Xing Pi San. If ineffective, condition is critical. Pulse check Taichong; if not absent, moxa Baihui point (midpoint between hairlines and ear tips). Moxa, then control phlegm with Qingzhou Bai Wan Zi + Honey + Duo Ming San. When phlegm flows, grind Ling Sha, mix with rice drink, apply to mouth. Monitor improvement. For wind excess, use Ba Xian San; for drowsiness, Xing Pi San. Reduce breastfeeding; mother takes Niang Ru Fang. Such regulation ensures recovery. Those with weak constitution/fate may not be saved despite skill. If phlegm is stuck in throat like sawing, meds cannot enter, use other methods to lift phlegm, induce sneezing via nasal irritation, then take Duo Ming San to prevent recurrence.
Liao Tan Fang (Phlegm-Lifting Formula)
Chuan Wu Jian Bai Fu Jian (each 7 pieces, peeled, raw) Xie Shao (7 pieces) Shi Lv (small amount)
Grind and mix evenly. Dip soft chicken feather in powder, insert into throat, withdraw slowly. Wipe frequently with cloth.
Above, Tang Shi's method for Slow Convulsion: First Duo Ming San/Bai Wan Zi to control phlegm. After phlegm reduces, use Ba Xian/Xing Pi San. Then mother uses Niang Ru Fang. For critical cases, moxa Baihui and use Liao Tan method. Note: Duo Ming San uses Meng Shi, difficult for Qi-deficient patients; combine with Dong Yuan Yi Huang San.
[Chen Shi's Method]
For Slow Convulsion, first take Xiong Xie San, manually manipulate out cold-phlegm, preventing dementia. Then you Zhu Gao, then Yi Zhen Tang to warm/strengthen Yuan Qi. Frequently take Qian Po San to widen upper and solidify lower.

Chuan Xiong Bi Bo (each 1 liang) Xi Xin Ban Xia (wine-soaked overnight, water-washed, dried) (each 2 qian) Xie Shao (de-toxified, 1 qian)
Fine powder. For 1-week-old infant, take coin-sized dose, mix with boiling water, slightly warm, take on empty stomach. If phlegm fills chest/throat, oblique gaze, take immediately. If eyes fixed upward/unmoving, difficult to save. If phlegm blocks swallowing, probe throat with finger to remove phlegm, restore breathing, then use Bu Pi Yi Zhen Tang or You Zhu Gao. This formula has saved many lives across generations.
You Zhu Gao Treats rebellious Qi/vomiting, wind-phlegm convulsions.
Shi Ting Zhi (wax-like sulfur) Hua Shi (each 0.5 liang) Hei Fu Zi (processed, peeled/navel removed) Ban Xia (wine-soaked overnight, water-washed 7 times, dried) Nan Xing (vinegar-soaked overnight, water-washed 7 times, dried) (each 1 qian)

Cut. Take 3 qian with 1 cup water, decoct to 0.7 cups. Slightly warm, take on empty stomach.
If infants mistakenly take cooling herbs or have water-wiped mouths, damaging Spleen/Stomach, resulting in diarrhea, distension, or rumbling. Pale face, no smiling, looking down. High/tight fontanelle, blue veins on sutures, green stool. Fat infant, stool like clear mucus or jelly. Blinking frequently, green/white frothy stool, sometimes hard. Above five signs, sudden vomiting leads to Yin Epilepsy (commonly called Slow Convulsion). Infant head hot, eyes blue-white, cold feet. Or distension/cold feet. Or diarrhea/cold feet. Or vomiting/cold feet. Or thirst/cold feet. (Head heat/red eyes/phlegm block are rootless fire rebellion.) Above five signs, sudden vomiting with convulsions is named Slow Spleen Wind. Immediately give Bu Pi Yi Zhen Tang (3 qian + 1 Quan Xie). If convulsion due to fright, take Qian Po San (3 qian + 0.5 qian Fu Zi + 0.5 qian Qian Hu), decoct together.
Above, Chen Wenzhong's method for Slow Convulsion has unique sequence. Recorded for reference. Clinical cases show Xiong Xie San and You Zhu Gao are highly effective.
