A patient presented with fever and irritability. The physician administered Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Ruan Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix). The vexation and heat were cleared, but deep-seated blood stasis remained. The physician suggested puncturing to drain the stasis, but the patient refused. Suddenly, trismus (lockjaw) occurred, and the affected area became painful. Only then was puncture performed, draining pus and blood, after which the patient immediately felt relieved. Tuoli Yangxue (Supporting Interior and Nourishing Blood) methods were used, and new flesh gradually grew. Suddenly, pruritus (itching) occurred at the affected site, indicating wind-heat pathogen. The patient recovered after using wind-dispelling and detoxifying agents.
Another patient suffered from distending pain in the buttocks and thighs, accompanied by fever and irritability. Puncture was used to release dead blood (stasis), which slightly alleviated the distending pain, but the fever and irritability worsened. This was due to blood loss leading to deficiency, while the evil fire was flourishing. Urgent treatment with Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) for tonification was required, resulting in slight improvement. Subsequently, herbs that strengthen the spleen and stomach and nourish qi and blood were used. As the necrotic tissue gradually sloughed off, the patient healed. Generally, for such conditions, preventive regulation and tonification should be employed to support convergence; one must not attack the qi and blood or fail to tonify, lest healing be prevented.
For any scald or burn injury, one should immediately approach a fire source to warm the area. Although this causes extreme pain requiring endurance for a moment, it prevents subsequent pain. Do not cover with cold objects or apply mud from the bottom of a well, as this traps heat, causing rot to penetrate into the muscles.
[Dan] For burns caused by fire, wash with good wine; then apply salt on top. If the skin is collapsed, apply cowhide gelatin boiled in wine. For scalds by hot water, apply dregs of ash filtered twice; this brings immediate relief. For scalds by hot wine, stir-fried black rice flour mixed with wine should be applied. To treat scalds and burns before ulceration forms, burn the white root of Artemisia argyi (Aiye) to ash, mix with egg yolk, and apply. If an ulcer has formed, seal with white honey and paste bamboo membrane over it, three times daily.
[Shi] To treat scald burns, stir-fry bran until black and charred, grind into powder, and apply; this is miraculous. This formula has tonifying properties and can be used throughout the course of treatment. To treat scald burns, take yellow earth from old silver-smelting furnaces that has been scorched, grind finely like powder, mix with fresh ginger juice, apply on cloth, and the pain stops. Another method: use fine powder from the bottom of a silver-melting pot, mixed with oil for application, which is excellent.
[Qian] For fire blisters not yet raised, burn Gardeniae fructus (Zhizi) kernels to ash, seal with sesame oil (Mahu); higher concentration is better. For established ulcers, burn white sugar to ash/powder and apply; dryness indicates cure. (Using white sugar is from Ge's Formula.)
Formula for Treating Scalds and Burns:
Take buckwheat flour above, stir-fry until yellow, mix with honey water, and apply; effect is divine.
Baosheng Jiuku San (Preserve Life and Save Suffering Powder): Treats damage from fire burns and hot oil, even if muscles are exposed, and all dog bites, knife, or axe wounds.
Use raw Hanshui Shi (Calcitum) in any amount, grind to extremely fine powder, mix and apply. Or apply dry, but mixing with oil is superior; pain stops immediately, no suppuration occurs, no suffering remains, and healing progresses daily. There will never be tetanus.

Grind all to fine powder. Mix with fresh water or small amount of oil and apply; pain stops immediately.
Treating redness, rot, heat, and pain from scalds/burns:
Chishi Zhi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Hanshui Shi, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts)
Grind to powder. Mix with fresh drawn water and apply to the wound.
Treating burns:
Tongyou (Verniciae Fructus Oleum), Shuiyin (Hydrargyrum) (equal parts)
Stir these two ingredients continuously with a willow twig until they form a paste. Add Dahuang powder and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) powder, mix with cowhide gelatin, dissolve with a little water. Apply externally with cat belly hair, finely cut and sprinkled onto the paste.
Lvbai San (Green and White Powder): Treats pain from scalds and burns.
Use Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) in any amount, grind to fine powder. Each time, mix with small amount of oil and rub on.
For severe pain from hot oil burns, take black silt from under the toilet, adjust quantity according to wound size; mix with old ginger juice and one-tenth part sesame oil, grind evenly, and rub on the wound for immediate cure. Applying Qingdai is also excellent.
Treating scalds and burns:
Dahuang, Huangqin, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shanzhizi, Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Beimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), Mituosen (Lithargyri Pulvis), Rushiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), Qingfen, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (equal parts)
Grind to fine powder. Mix with egg white and honey, and constantly sweep/apply to the wound.
Qingliang Gao (Cooling Ointment): Treats scalds and burns from hot water/fire. This ointment stops pain, detoxifies, moistens skin, and promotes flesh growth.
Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus Semen), Huanglian (devoid of fibers), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 2.5 qian), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (2 liang), Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (10 stems, broken), Huangla (Cera Flava) (0.5 liang), Qing Mayou (Sesamum Oil) (4 liang)
Finely chop, fry in oil pan until Dihuang is charred black, filter through cotton cloth to remove dregs, clarify. Then add wax to the pan, simmer slowly until wax melts, pour into porcelain box. When using, dip chicken feather slightly, apply to ulcer, continue until healed.
Mazi Gao (Hemp Seed Ointment): Treats burnt human flesh decay.
Mazi (Cannabis Fructus) (1 he, take kernel, crush), Baipi (Celtis Cortex), Liubaipi (Salix Alba Cortex), Shanzhizi (crushed), Baizhi, Gancao (each 2 liang)
Chop finely, decoct in 1 jin of Zhu Zhi (Porcine Adipose Tissue), boil up and down three times, remove dregs. Apply to ulcer, three times daily.
Huangbai San: Treats scalds and burns.
Huangbai, Dahuang, Puxiao, Jizi Qiao (Eggshell), Hanshui Shi (equal parts)
Grind to fine powder, mix with water and apply; extremely effective.
Baiye San: Treats scalds and burns.
Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen), Zhizi Ren (each 1 liang), Hufen (Lead Carbonate) (ground, 0.5 liang)
Grind to fine powder, melt 5 he of Yang Sui (Ovis Medullary Fat), mix with medicine, grind with wooden pestle 300-500 times, apply three times daily for cure.
Ge Fen San (Clam Powder): Treats scalds and burns.
Take clam shells (Gebei), any amount, roast until yellow and charred, grind to fine powder. Mix with raw oil to form paste, apply; feels like ice, leaves no scar. Another method: mix with honey water, apply; pain stops immediately, no suppuration, no deformity. Wu Neihan, living in his hometown, had a neighbor's pot overturn, scalding a child from head to toe. He urgently applied this; crying stopped immediately, and the child was unharmed. It is only effective if applied immediately upon injury; delay makes it ineffective. One must prepare it in advance for emergency use.
Treating scald/burn sores:
Take Ce Baiye (Platycladi Cacumen), wet-grind in mortar until mushy, mix with cold water to form paste. Apply to wound, bind with cloth for 2-3 days; sore will heal and scar disappear. Another method: burn to ash retaining nature, grind to powder, mix with egg white for application; reapply if dry, or mix with honey. Or grind to powder, mix with fat/lard for application; change when dry. Another method: smash Shanbaiziye (Mountain Cypress leaf) and apply.
Treating fire spots forming sores with exudate from proximity to fire, and treating fire qi entering sores:
Use Huangbai and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) ground to powder, sprinkle dry; cures immediately. Another method: use Huangbipi (Phellodendri Cortex) powder, sprinkle; cures immediately. Bohe decoction for washing/application is also acceptable.
For ruined fire sores, use Yunmu Fen (Muscovite Powder) mixed with raw sheep marrow, and apply.
[Jing] Excellent treatment for scald/burn sores: Use Liu Jinu (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) powder. First, sweep the wound with sticky rice paste using a chicken feather, then apply the herb powder. No pain, no scar. Generally for scalds, first sprinkle salt powder to protect flesh from necrosis, then apply medicine. Another method: Yu Baipi (Ulmus Cortex) powder mixed with pig fat oil heals sores.
