Zhu prescribed Mahuang Guizhi Tang (Ephedra and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) with added Jiuhuangbai (Scutellariae Radix processed with wine), Shengfuzi (Prepared Aconite Root lateralis), Gualouzi (Trichosanthis Semen), Gancaojie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma with nodes), Qianghuo, Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). After six doses, the swelling resolved. Was this not the intent of internal support methods?

Usage: One dose, decoct with two cups of water until one cup remains, take before meals.
[Xue Ji] Note: This formula is for promoting circulation and attacking toxins. If the pulse is deep and full with constipation, the toxin is in the zang organs, and this formula is suitable to eliminate the disease source, with great efficacy. If the zang-fu are harmonious and the pulse is not full, it should likely not be used. The formula in *Yi Lin Ji Yao* uses one jin of Dahuang and six liang of Baizhi, ground into powder. Take three qian per dose with hot wine, and also use tea clear to apply topically, named Wanjin San (Ten-Thousand Gold Powder), valued for its efficacy. It should be made into water-habit pills for oral administration. Brother Shen Qianxian from Wujiang suffered from a back carbuncle, numb and hard, with a deep and full pulse, indicating toxin inside. After one dose, foul matter was discharged via stool and urine; after another dose, it resolved. I fear patients might overlook these two medicines, so I share my verified experiences.
Treatment for Back Sores: Jingjie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica), Mugua Zi Rou (Mumordicae Semen Endocarpium), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gui Tou (Angelicae Sinensis Radix head), Gancao Jie (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma with nodes). Except for Jingjie Sui as the sovereign herb, the others are in equal proportions. Decoct with one bowl of wine and one bowl of water until seven-tenths remain. Drink empty-stomached facing east to discharge accumulation; stop with porridge. If hardened lumps form, use seven Chuanlianzi (Toosendan Fructus), burn to ash, take with wine, then fourteen, then twenty-one. After three doses, even hardened lumps will shrink. (Tao Shi.)
Neituo San (Internal-Supporting Powder): Treats various swollen toxins and malignant sores; resolves immediately after one dose.
Ingredients: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mumian (Concha Ostreae) (each 0.5 liang), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus, two pieces), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 qian).

Remove dregs, store in porcelain. Cover with blue cloth and dew overnight. Take warm at dawn. Discharging pus and blood indicates efficacy. Subsequently, decoct and take Shengliao Sijunzi Tang (Raw Four Gentlemen Decoction).
Loulu Tang (See Volume 4, Thigh Section, Parosteal Abscess entry.)

Neixiao Wan (Internal-Resolving Pills) [*Bao Jian*]: Treats early-stage sores and tumors, scrofula and lymph node tuberculosis, stagnant heat-toxin; resolves internally upon ingestion.
Ingredients: Bohe Ye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus, non-worm-eaten, boiled soft, both ingredients 0.5 jin, decocted into paste), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen, 0.5 jin, take first-grade powder), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 0.5 liang), Guangzhu (Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma, processed), Jingsanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma, processed, each 3 qian).

Shenxian Jiedu Wanbing Wan (Immortal Detoxifying Ten-Thousand-Disease Pill) (Also known as Zhidu Wan, or Yushu Dan.)
Treats all toxins, including Guzi, Shuman, mushrooms, minerals/metals, poisoning from epidemic-dead cattle/horses/pufferfish, seasonal plagues, mountain miasma, malaria, acute throat closure, winding-throat wind, spleen disease, yellow edema, red eyes, exposure to cold/heat, upward attacking heat-toxin, hanging, drowning, blunt trauma, carbuncles and back infections, burns/scalds, snake/insect/dog/rat bites, evil possession/wandering madness, ghost fetus/ghost qi. All are suitable for treatment. Essential for home and travel, a true treasure for saving lives and protecting the body. Poisonous substances are most common in Lingnan and Liangguang. If traveling there, take if feeling unwell to restore peace. There is a grass called Humancao (Stramonium/Strychnos?) or Duanchangcao (Intestine-Cutting Grass); placing it in water and drinking causes death. Also, kill a venomous snake, cover with grass, sprinkle water; fungi grow on it in days. Grind to powder, mix with wine to induce poison; initially harmless, but drinking alcohol afterwards causes immediate death. Or, promiscuous women often pair with northern men; northern men secretly give medicine, place it in food, warning: "If you follow her words next year, she will detoxify you; if overdue, you will die." Called Nianyao (Year-Determining Medicine). Northerners going there should know this. If feeling poisoned, with imbalance of the four elements, take this immediately. Since they likely put poison in chicken/pork meat, eating it later triggers toxicity. Quickly take one tablet; vomiting or diarrhea brings immediate recovery. Once, a woman with chronic consumption eaten by corpse worms ground one tablet and took it, vomiting and defecating over a thousand small worms. Later, taking Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) for half a month restored normalcy. For poisoned cattle/horses/livestock, this medicine saves them effectively.
Ingredients: Wenha (Clam Shell, 3 liang, pale red-yellow, crushed and washed, also known as Wubeizi), Shanzhugu (Paris Polyphyllae Rhizoma, 2 liang), Xuisui Zi (Euphorbiae Lathyridis Semen, shell removed, ground, pressed with paper to remove oil, re-ground, 1 liang), Hongya Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix, washed, 1.5 liang), Shexiang (Moschus, 3 qian, ground).
Usage: Grind each separately into fine powder, mix evenly. Combine with glutinous rice porridge, pound over a thousand times in a wooden mortar. Divide each batch into forty tablets. Prepare on Dragon Boat Festival, Double Ninth Festival, or Qixi Festival. For urgent use, Chen day is acceptable. Do not let women, mourners, incomplete persons, or chickens/dogs see the preparation. Handle with care, otherwise ineffective. For unruptured carbuncles/back infections, grind with cold water, apply to pain site and take orally; itching subsides quickly. For Yin-Yang dual toxins, typhoid with chest stuffiness, delirium, stagnation in chest/diaphragm, undischarged evil-toxin, plagues, mountain miasma, winding-throat wind, grind with cold water and one Mentha leaf. For acute madness, shouting, wandering, ghost fetus/qi, take with warm non-ash wine. For hanging or drowning death with warm heart, or fright death, ghost bewitchment death, not yet overnight, grind with cold water and灌 (force-feed). For snake/dog/centipede bites, grind with cold water, apply to wound; if abdominal distension or confusion, take orally. For all types of malaria, new or old, decoct Peach and Willow branch soup to send down before onset. For pediatric acute/chronic convulsions, five wasting disorders, eight dysenteries, grind with honey water and one Mentha leaf. For locked jaw, grind one tablet for external application, take internally according to age. For toothache, grind with wine, apply and swallow a little. For burns/scalds, grind with flowing east water, apply to wound. For blunt trauma, take with fried Pine Node wine. For long-standing headache in Taiyang region, grind with wine and Mentha, apply paper flower to Taiyang acupoint, and take. For all epilepsy, facial deviation, blinking, night salivation, slurred speech, stroke with locked jaw, muscle spasms, joint wind-swelling, limb pain, difficulty walking, all wind-pain, grind with wine and take. Pregnant women must not take.
[Xue Ji] Note: Treated a woman with an abdominal mass persisting for years; another woman with delayed menstruation and abdominal pain, ineffective against blood-breaking and Qi-moving agents, cured by this. A woman suffering from head wind vertigo for years took it, vomited a bowl of phlegm, and never relapsed. A man with throat closure unable to swallow liquids; a man with winding-throat wind and excessive phlegm; a woman with stroke and locked jaw with涌ing phlegm, all cured. A man with hard groin abscess; a man with painful hemorrhoids not yet suppurated and difficult defecation, each took one tablet, discharged twice, pain stopped, resolved in days. A man with back carbuncle head like millet, heavy as carrying a stone, took internally and applied externally, discharged three to four times, anus felt like moxa, healed that day. Three men skinned dead cows, developed countless purple blisters, became confused, each灌ed one tablet, vomited and diarrhea, revived. One who could not take medicine died. A child unconscious for six days; a child with convulsions, other medicines failed, mouth pried open and灌ed, both revived. A man with stroke, locked jaw, salivating, also灌ed, recovered soon. A woman possessed by evil, abdominal bloating, took it, discharged foul matter, evil returned, took half tablet, moxaed two to three tablets nightly filling room with smoke, evil did not return again. A family with consumptive disease, five brothers, three dead, a Daoist advised taking this medicine, each took one tablet, one discharged pus-like foul matter, one discharged dead moth-like insects, all survived. This person subsequently used this medicine widely for corpse diseases, all effective. I often use it for miscellaneous diseases and un-suppurated sores/toxins, very effective; for suppurated ones, it reduces severity. Although ingredients do not mention tonics, emaciated people take it effectively, truly a divine agent. Economically, three qian of silver buys seventy tablets, saving seventy people. Wealthy families should prepare it to help others. Recent preparations often add Yuansha (Realgar?) and Xionghuang (Realgar), but checking other formulas, these are absent. I therefore do not use them, fearing confusion of authenticity. Those who know will understand.
