[Chronic Cough]
Zhu Danxi stated: For chronic cough caused by wind-cold invading the lungs, this method is indispensable for removal. Herbs include Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome), Kuandonghua (Coltsfoot Flower), Eguan Shi (Tube Coral Stone), Foer Cao (Petasites Leaf), Xionghuang (Realgar). Grind into powder, mix with mugwort wool. Place a thick slice of fresh ginger on the tongue, then burn the mugwort on top of the ginger. Ensure the smoke enters the throat. Another formula uses Yujin (Curcuma Radix) instead of Foer Cao. Yet another formula uses Eguan Shi and Xionghuang (each 1.5 fen) ground separately; Kuandonghua and Foer Cao (each 1.5 fen) also ground separately. Take a square paper sheet, 4-5 cun wide. Apply egg white to the center, leaving a 1-cun border uncoated. Sprinkle Eguan Shi and Xionghuang powder onto the egg white, then sprinkle Kuandonghua and Foer Cao powder on top. Roll the paper from the uncoated edge into a tube using an arrow shaft, seal the side with paste, remove the shaft, and bake dry. To use, hold one end of the paper tube in the mouth, ignite the other end, inhale the smoke deeply until swallowed, continuing until the tube is burnt out. Then drink 2-3 mouthfuls of tea to suppress the taste.
Smoking Method for Chronic Cough: Each morning, take coltsfoot flower the size of an egg, mix with a little honey to moisten, place in an iron pan of 1 sheng capacity. Drill a hole in a clay bowl, insert a small bamboo tube or pen tube (slightly longer is better). Seal the junction of the bowl, pan, and tube with flour paste to prevent gas leakage. Place charcoal fire under the pan. Soon, coltsfoot smoke will emerge from the tube. Inhale and swallow the smoke through the tube. If feeling slight chest oppression, lift the head and press the bamboo tube with fingers to prevent smoke leakage, stopping when smoke ends. Perform this every five days. On the sixth day, eat a full meal of mutton wontons for a permanent cure. (Alternative method: Use a spouted clay pot to burn herbs, cover the mouth, and inhale smoke from the spout, which is even more effective.)

Use yin-nourishing formulas, such as Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) and Chao Baigu Zhi (Stir-fried Anemarrhena Rhizome).
