Bee Larvae (Fengzi)
Sweet in taste, neutral and slightly cold in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats head wind disease (diseases of the head caused by invasion of wind pathogen), eliminates gu poison (a difficult syndrome caused by parasites or toxins), tonifies deficiency and emaciation, regulates middle jiao injury, alleviates heart and abdominal pain; effective for adults and children vomiting due to five types of intestinal parasites; also treats yellowing of the face and eyes. Long-term consumption makes the complexion lustrous and rosy, delays aging, lightens the body, and benefits qi.
Giant Hornet Larvae: Primarily treats distension, fullness, and pain in the heart and abdomen, dry heaving, lightens the body, and benefits qi.
Earth Bee Larvae: Primarily treats carbuncles and swellings (purulent infections of skin and muscle), and sore throat. Also known as Feiling. Grows in the valleys of Wudu. Averse to Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao), and Ostrea Concha (Muli).
Tao Hongjing stated: The "bee larvae" mentioned directly earlier should be honeybee larvae. They are taken when the head and legs have not yet developed, stir-fried, and eaten. Additionally, soaked in wine and applied to the face, it makes the complexion bright and white. Yellow hornets refer to those nesting on household eaves and Hou bees (sound 'hou'). Currently consulting Chen Cangqi's Materia Medica: Bee larvae treat erysipelas (acute infection with sudden redness like painted cinnabar), wind rash (itchy skin with red patches), retained heat in the abdomen, difficulty in urination and defecation, remove floating blood, treat leukorrhea in women, and promote lactation; these are the white, pupa-like larvae in the honeycomb. Those dwelling in holes are called earth bees, which are the largest, can cause death if they sting, and their larvae are also large and white, with efficacy similar to honeybee larvae. Ministers Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to Chen Cangqi: Earth bees are reddish-black and toxic. They promote urination and defecation, and treat leukorrhea in women. Those who eat them must use winter melon, bitter vegetables, fresh ginger, and Perilla to counteract the toxicity.
Tu Jing states: Bees, the Classic of Materia Medica mentions bee larvae, yellow hornets, and earth bees, noting under earth bees that they grow in the valleys of Wudu and are now found everywhere. Bee larvae are honeybee larvae. In the honeycomb, they look like pupae and are white. Giant hornet larvae are those nesting on household eaves and Hou bees (sound 'hou') and Lou bees (sound 'lou') in large trees. People in Lingnan also consume them as food. These bees are yellow and larger than honeybees. Earth bee larvae are those dwelling in burrows in the soil; this bee is the largest, and its sting can sometimes cause death. Whenever using bee larvae, those whose heads and legs have not yet developed are preferred. Respectfully consulting the Record of the Regions Beyond the Mountains records the method of Xuanzhou and Shexou people collecting bee larvae: Large bees build nests in mountain forests, as large as giant bells, with hundreds of layers inside. When locals harvest, they must cover their bodies with grass clothing to defend against stings, then use smoke and fire to disperse the queen bees before daring to climb cliff trees and cut the nest stalks. One nest may contain five or six dou up to one shi of larvae. They are stir-fried with salt, dried in the sun, sent to the capital Luoyang, and offered as local specialties. However, if one-third of the larvae in the nest have fully formed wings and legs, they are unusable. Detailed examination shows that those nesting on trees belong to the Vespa (hornet) category. However, bee larvae from Xuancheng are dug from the ground, resembling earth bees. Thus, Guo Pu's commentary on the Erya regarding earth bees states: Today in Jiangdong, large bees building nests underground are called horse bees (hornets). In Jing and Ba regions, they are called Dan bees (sound 'dan'). He also comments on wood bees: Similar to earth bees but smaller, building nests on trees; people in Jiangdong also call them wood bees and eat their larvae. Then both these bee larvae have been edible for a long time. Generally, bee species belong to the same family, and their properties and effects are not far apart.
The Book of Rites states: Jue, [missing character], cicada, Fan. The commentary notes: Tiao refers to cicadas. Fan refers to bees.
