Treats chest bi syndrome (Chest Obstruction Syndrome) manifesting with wheezing, coughing and expectoration, pain in the chest and back, and shortness of breath. The pulse at the cunkou (Radial artery at the wrist) is deep and slow, while the pulse at the guan position (middle position of the radial pulse) is slightly tight and rapid. This decoction is indicated.
Gualou Fruit (Trichosanthis Fructus), one piece, crushed. Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), half sheng. Baijiu (White wine), seven sheng.
Take the above three ingredients, boil together, obtain two sheng of liquid, divide into two doses, take warm.
Song says: The chest is the residence of Yang qi, vast like the sky. When Yin pathogenic factors fill and obstruct, bi syndrome occurs without unblocking. Half a sheng of Xiebai paired with one Gualou, combined with seven sheng of white wine, achieves miraculous efficacy.
Sun Xin Dian, grandson of Sun Simiao, notes: The chest is the pathway for Qi respiration. If Yin evil occupies this space, it blocks the smooth flow of Yang qi, thus generating symptoms such as wheezing, coughing with expectoration, and chest-back pain. The cunkou position is the convergence of pulses and belongs to the Yang aspect. The "Chapter on Pulse Diagnosis" in the Neijing states: "Upper reaching upper" refers to matters concerning the chest and throat...
For chest bi syndrome where the patient cannot lie flat, and heart pain radiates to the back, this decoction is indicated.
Gualou Fruit (Trichosanthis Fructus), one piece, crushed. Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), three liang. Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), half sheng. Baijiu (White wine), one dou.
Take the above four ingredients, boil together, obtain three sheng of liquid, take one sheng warm per dose, three times daily.
Song says: Chest and back pulling pain prevents lying down. (The previous text mentioned chest-back pain; adding inability to lie down indicates severe pain. The reason is the presence of phlegm-fluid...)
Yuan Xi comments: Adding Banxia not only clears fluid retention but also harmonizes the Stomach and facilitates the communication between Yin and Yang.
For chest bi syndrome characterized by a feeling of fullness and stagnation in the heart region, Qi blockage remaining in the chest, chest distension, and rebellious Qi rushing from the hypochondrium towards the heart, this decoction is indicated. Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction).
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit), four pieces. Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), half sheng. Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), one liang. Houpo (Magnolia Bark), four liang. Gualou Fruit (Trichosanthis Fructus), one piece, crushed.
Take the above five ingredients, add five sheng of water, first boil Zhishi and Houpo to obtain two sheng of liquid, remove dregs, add the remaining herbs, boil for a few more boils, divide into two doses, take warm.
Song says: Fullness extends to the chest and hypochondrium, rebellious Qi attacks the heart. (You Zaijing says: Subcardiac fullness is formed by Qi obstruction leading to fullness. Regarding rebellious Qi from the hypochondrium attacking the heart, it means Qi does not ascend from the middle but rebels upward from the hypochondrium, indicating middle jiao obstruction hindering the free flow of all Qi.) Half a sheng of Xiebai with four liang of Houpo, one Gualou with one liang of Guizhi, four pieces of Zhishi disperse floating Yin. (You Zaijing says: One should urgently unblock the Qi stagnation and knot.)
Yuan Xi comments: Zhishi and Houpo drain fullness and move stagnant accumulation, descending rebellious Qi. With Guizhi transforming Taiyang Qi, the stagnation in the chest naturally opens. Using these three herbs together with Xiebai and Gualou, which specifically treat chest bi, embodies the principle that eliminating disease must be thorough.
