Whenever there is abdominal distension and pain with difficulty in breathing, the patient lies supine, flexes one knee, and extends the other leg. Needle into Qichong (ST30) to a depth of three cun; when Deqi (arrival of Qi) is achieved, apply the reducing method. (From *Qianjin Fang*) Dazhong (KI4), Xangu (GB41) (see "Eructation"), Xuanzhong (GB39) govern abdominal distension. (*Qianjin Fang* notes pediatric abdominal distension with anorexia.) Yinshi (ST89) governs abdominal distension, flaccidity-coldness (Wei-Jue), and shortness of breath. Yin (KI10) governs abdominal distension and accumulation-masses. Chongmen (SP15) governs cold-Qi-induced abdominal distension and abdominal accumulation-pain. Yinbai (SP1) governs abdominal distension with frequent vomiting. Zusanli (ST36), Xingjian (LR2), Ququan (LR8) govern abdominal distension. Shangqiu (SP5) governs abdominal distension, a sensation of obstruction ("Xiangxiangran"), and cold-pain below the heart. Dada (SP2) treats febrile diseases with inability to sweat, cold extremities, abdominal distension, tendency to vomit, irritability, heat, confusion, retching, and vertigo. Lidui (ST45) (see "Corpse-like Coma"), Lougu (SP7) (see "Phlegm-Fluid Mass") treat heart and abdominal distension. Moxibustion on Jiegu (GB39) (seen in *Qianjin* under "Rebellious Qi"). Juque (CV14) and others govern abdominal distension. Kunlun (BL60) governs sudden abdominal distension. (Both seen in "Abdominal Pain" section). Taibai (SP3) and others govern large abdominal distension. (See "Abdominal Distension" section). [Missing character/symbol] (under "Epistaxis" section). Zusanli (ST36) treats abdominal distension. For patients with heart and abdominal distension, I mostly prescribe Houpo (Magnolia Bark). The dosage is seven or eight qian of finely chopped herb per dose (reduced for children). Decoct with seven slices of fresh ginger in a small bowl of water until reduced to 70% volume, then administer. The dregs are decocted again for a second dose. Within five to six doses, the distension resolves. The efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion may not be this rapid. Therefore, I record this here.
Abdominal pain that hurts upon pressing but does not hurt upon heavy pressing is Qi pain. If heavy pressing causes more pain and the abdomen feels hard, it indicates an accumulation-mass. Qi pain should not be treated with purgatives; purging will exacerbate the pain. This is a deficiency-cold syndrome. Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) treats abdominal pain with miraculous effect (from *Liang Fang*).
